Vukcevic fires Sporting to victory in Denmark

Nordsjaelland 0-1 Sporting

Simon VukcevicA first-half goal from Simon Vukcevic gave Sporting a narrow win in the away leg of their Europa League 3rd qualifying round tie against Nordsjaellan. Goalkeeper Rui Patricio made a good save in the very first minute, but from then onwards the Portuguese team dominated.
Sporting’s first official match of the 2010/11 season ended in victory. With better finishing the Portuguese club could have put the tie out of the reach of their modest Danish opponents.
Montenegrin midfielder Vukcevic put the Portuguese side ahead in the 24th minutes when he latched onto a beautiful Maniche pass and showed good footwork to round the goalkeeper and slide the ball into the net from a narrow angle.
Vukcevic, Postiga, Joao Pereira and Valdes all came close to scoring as the Lions built on their encouraging pre-season form with another dominant display, especially in the second half, with right-back Pereira the outstanding performer for Sporting.
It was not all good news however, as the defence looked shaky at times and Pedro Mendes was forced to hobble out of the match. The full extent of the injury will only be known tomorrow.

Paulo Sergio, Sporting coach:

“I liked our performance. We have a completely new team, we are growing. Given the chances we created, we should have left here with a bigger lead. But Nordsjaelland are more than just a team of tall blonds. They have a good technical level but couldn’t play how they wanted because we pressured them well and didn’t let them build.”
The second leg will be played at the Alvalade stadium on 5 August.

Happy to see the win.
I know I hate Sporting, but please let them advance in the Europa League. The league needs them to.

That being said, it's troubling that Mendes is already knicked up. With Veloso gone, and the club depending on the likes of Manuche and Postiga, that could be a major issue during the season.
Sporting just doesn't have a good caliber of palyers on the bench. We'll see.
I was thrilled to see that J Perreira is doing well, but that middle of the defense has issues.

This one is far from over since, Sporting has had their issues playing at home.
