Maritimo ease into Europa League play-offs

Bangor City 1-2 Maritimo (3-10 aggregate)

maritimo-celebrataions-20100510.jpgMaritimo continued where they left off after the first-leg and registered another victory as the Portuguese side made their way into the next phase of the Europa League with a 2-1 away win against Wales' Bangor City.

With the Madeira outfit carrying an 8-2 lead from the first leg, Maritimo boss Mitchell van der Gaag clearly felt confident enough in his team’s chances of progression to make several changes to his side. Briguel and Luciano Amaral were drafted into the defence, while Rafael Miranda came in for Sousa in midfield and Adilson lined up in attack in place of Cherrad.

The Welsh side took the lead on nine minutes through Alan Bull, but failed to add to their lead and the tie was effectively over when just the one goal separated the teams going into the break, with the hosts requiring five goals without reply in the second period to progress on away goals.

As it was, Maritimo levelled less than three minutes after the re-start through Brazilian striker Adilson. The winning goal on the night came ten minutes later, with another of the club’s contingent from Brazil, summer signing from Vitoria Guimaraes, Marquinho, making it 2-1 to the visitors.

Yellow Cards: None

Bangor:

Smith, Morley, Roberts, Hoy, Johnston, Garside (Hurdman, 67‘), Bull, Edwards (Williams, 77‘), Ward, Jebb (Davies, 66‘), Jones.

It really could have been another 8-2, Maritimo had LOTS of chances, they hit the post twice in the first half and had possibly 10 one on ones with the goalkeeper.
Congrats

Maritimo always seems to be on the cusp.
I wish them the best in the Europa League. They should pour their efforts into it.
They should also concentrate on winning the Taca Portugal or Taca Liga.
Dare to dream!
