Maritimo BATE'red in BelarusBATE Borisov 3-0 Maritimo Maritimo's chances of progressing through in the Europa League were dealt a massive blow as the Madeira club crased to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of BATE Borisov.
The Portuguese side were brought down to earth after the ego-inflating round they had previously with Bangor City. Maritimo will have to do the near impossible and grab four unanswered goals in order to progress to the group stages of the competition. It was a quiet first-half up until the 29th minute when Robson had a two glorious opportunities to put Maritimo up as the centre-back's first effort went off Shitov and the second saw the stopper slip at the last second, sending his shot wide. The hosts responded twice before the interval as Rodionov looked certain to give BATE the lead in the 38th minute, but a fantastic intervention by Ricardo Esteves, kept the match scoreless. At the stroke of half-time Rodionov was unfortunate not to score as his effort hit the far post. After the break, Maritimo looked dead ceratin to grab the match's first goal, but Baba's effort was sent over the net, with only Veremko to beat. The miss would cost the visitors dearly as BATE got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute when Olekhnovich was cleverly picked up by Pavlov and sent a low ball to the far post. Then the wheels fell off for Maritimo as BATE got their second goal three minutes later when Renan Bressan beat Marcelo with a looping effort. The match was put away in the 71st minute when Pavlov picked up a juciy rebound from a Rodionov strike to give the Belarussians a comfortable lead heading to Madeira. BATE Borisov Veremko, Yurevich, Shitov, Radkov, Bordachov, Olekhnovich, Kontsevoi (Patoski, 90), Pavlov (Baga, 81), Renan Bressan (Skavysh, 84), Nekhaychik, Rodionov Yellow Cards: Olekhovich (47), Nekhaychik (51), Veremko (81), Rodionov (89) Maritimo Marcelo, Ricardo Esteves, Guilherme, Robson, Alonso, Roberto Sousa, Miranda, Marquinho (Cherrad, 69), Danilo Dias (Luciano, 85), Tcho (Djalma, 62), Baba Yellow Cards: Ricardo Esteves (3), Djalma (78) Goals: [1-0] Olekhnovich, 57 [2-0] Renan Bressan, 60 [3-0] Pavlov, 71 |

I would love to see teams like Maritimo, Nacional, and V.Guimaraes do well in the League, and in Europe.
Those teams should try to take a page out of the playbook of Braga. A well disciplined, financially responsible club. Braga goes out, finds good talent at a low price. They have established themselves at the top, and are getting results.
You would think they would know the basics of how to defend but time and time again they make the same sloppy errors. They don't look like a side capable of keeping a clean sheet against anyone, as has been proven so far this season.
They really should of scored at least 1 away goal to give themselves a chance but BATE will more than likely score in Madeira anyway to kill off any hope.
They have however given us some valuable UEFA coeeficient points in those early rounds so for that we should at least be happy about. Hopefully they can win the second leg, even if its just 2-1 or 3-2 to get some more UEFA points!
