Insua stars as Sporting win in SwitzerlandFC Zurich 0-2 Sporting Sporting got off to the ideal start in their first game of the Europa League group stages with an away victory over Switzerland's FC Zurich. Lazio could surprisingly only draw at home to FC Vaslui which means Sporting top Group D after the first round of games.
Sporting began the game in the best possible fashion. After just three minutes a Stijn Schaars freekick floated to an unmarked Emiliano Insua, who cleverly turned in midair before heading to the goalkeeper's opposite side for his first Sporting goal in just his second game. Zurich had only themselves to blame for it, as poor marking left the Argentine with plenty of room, though nothing can be taken away from Insua's great finish. The visiting side continued to press Zurich whenever the hosts had the ball and when in possession Sporting looked to create down the left flank through the impressive Insua and Diego Capel. Déjà vuFC Zurich's first chance came in the 16th minute. Ogucihi Onyewu passed the ball back to Rui Patricio who proceeded to pick it up. The Sporting players felt Onyewu had been fouled, which perhaps explains Patricio's decision to pick up the ball. The Portugal goalkeeper had given away a free kick in identical circumstances on Saturday against Pacos de Ferreira, a highly disputed decision that led to a goal. Free kicks inside the box are always tricky to defend and Sporting had to rely on luck to survive this one. Ricardo Rodriguez's shot hit the outside of the post and Sporting survived a genuine moment of danger. The Lions went back on to the attack and a Stijn Schaars free kick was well saved by Zurich goalkeeper, Johnny Leoni, who palmed it out to Diego Capel on the outside of the box. The Spaniard pulled the trigger and Leoni once again made an impressive save. But Leoni could do nothing about the next Sporting chance. Once again Insua and Capel linked up on the left-hand side, and Insua found himself in lots of space to play a square pass for Ricky van Wolfswinkel to tap home. The Dutchman scored his second goal in two games after opening his Sporting account at the weekend. Zurich failed to create much in the attacking third. The Swiss team tried to play long balls behind the defence to catch out the centre-back partnership of Onyewu and Rodriguez but the pair were capably dealing with the threat. In the 26th minute a neat interchange outside the box fed Alexandre Alphonse, but his pass to the lively Yasine Chikhaoul was well cut out by the Sporting defence. Sporting went into the break after undoubtedly their most confident half of football so far this season. Woodword saves SportingIn the second half Zurich stepped up their game, with Sporting taking the foot off the pedal and happy to sit on the two-goal cushion. Zurich had their chances, the impressive Admir Mehmedi hitting the post in the 57th minute after weaving past Insua and Alberto Rodriguez. That scare may well have been a deciding factor in Domingos Paciencia's first substitution of the game, bringing on midfielder Andre Santos for the lively forward Andre Carrillo, which meant moving Bruno Pereirinha on to the right and Santos into the middle. Paciencia then brought on Diego Rubio for goal-scorer Ricky van Wolfswinkel, and the final change was a far more defensive one. Evaldo came on for the very impressive Diego Capel, with Insua moving into Capel's former position. On 76 minutes Ricardo Rodriguez, the man who hit the freekick onto the post in the first half, stepped up to take another one but this time the shot smashed the bar instead of the post with Patricio beaten. At the other end of the pitch Diego Rubio had a great chance to open his account with the club in a competitive match, after a typically battling Fabian Rinaudo found space for the Chilean forward but Rubio's resulting shot went narrowly wide. Zurich refused to lie down and gave Sporting some worrying moments in the closing stages. A goalmouth scramble could so easily have ended up in a Zurich goal and in the dying seconds of the game Alexandre Alphonse sent a free header over the bar from a corner. In the end a 2-0 win away from home in the Europa League is a very positive result and for the first time since 24th January of this year Sporting have won two games on the bounce. Sporting: Patricio, Joao Pereira, Onyewu, Rodriguez, Insua, Pereirinha, Rinaudo, Schaars, Carrillo (Andre Santos, 58'), Wolfswinkel (Rubio, 64'), Capel (Evaldo, 73') Goals: [0-1] Insua, 3' [0-2] van Wolfswinkel, 21' by Richard Cole Follow PortuGOAL on Twitter and Facebook |

Their biggest weakness is definitely the backline, as they sometimes put Patricio in some compromising positions. This can only be remedied by the CB's playing together often, both in practice and during games. Paciencia has to stick with a starting pair and allow them to become used to each other's tendencies and game play in order to develop repoire and consistency. It appears that Carrico is out of favor and Polga hasn't played, and Paciencia has put his faith in Rodriguez. As much as I like Carrico, including the fact that he is Portuguese and very talented, he has shown weaknesses in the back and Paciencia has made a decision to stick with other players. If Paciencia is going to trust Rodriguez and Gooch, then he needs to stick with them game in and game out and allow them to become a solid unit. Give them time. Also, keep an eye out for the future as Sporting have Eric Dier and Ilory developing. I hope those two kids turn out to be good options for Sporting two maybe three years down the line.
What I did like during the game and in general is the burgeoning relationship between Insua, Capel and Wolfswinkel. If Insua and Capel keep developing their relationship and playing the way they are, Sporting will have a killer left attack. Capel is an excellent winger, he drives the left side attack with great pace, dribbling and pinpoint crossing. Insua, is a great complement to Capel on the left and his crossing is excellent as well. Wolfswinkel is showing tons of promise and he is a finisher. I love how he is playing with Insua.
A very pleasant surprise that I saw during the game and also against Pacos is the play of Bruno Pereirinha. I love that instead of sending him back on loan, Paciencia has given him a shot and not only has he made the team, but he has started the last two games. His crossing and dribbling has been good and he has been playing well with his teamates. I thought he had a really good game against Zurich and I hope he keeps playing. It is good to see Sporting keep putting their faith in one of their own Portuguese products.
Rubio is another player that I like and he should keep coming off the bench, but I feel that Wolfswinkel should start. Rubio is only 18 and he definitely needs more time to develop. He can score and he has boundless energy and drive, but Wolfswinkel is 22 and I feel he is a bit more polished. If Paciencia opts to play both Rubio and Wolfswinkel together as he did against Pacos in the second half, I feel that the two can complement each other really well. Bojinov needs to adapt more. I haven't seen enough of him to have a definite opinion yet.
This is truly a completely different Sporting than last year, from structure, management, coaching, players, attitude and this adaptation and development period is a natural and necessary part of the process. I am happy with the last two results and I hope to see further success, both domestically and in Europe.
This also forces other Football Associations in Europe to recognize this (along with the other clubs wins' and Benfica's impressive tie against Man U) as a statement of intent that Portugal is climbing the rankings, and punching WAY above it's weight for a country it's size.
Forca Portugal!
However... as a SCP fan, I also have to point out the negatives. The scoreline in this one was deceptive. While the two goals were great (very happy with Van Wolfswinkle from what I've seen so far), Zurich was VERY close to scoring on multiple occasions. Depending on the woodwork isn't going to get Sporting very far. I still am not confident with the defense, and I hope that they will gel as the season progresses. Sporting were attacking more that I have seen this season so far, so that gives me some hope, but the backline looked vunerable, especially in the second half when Zurich turned up the pressure.
That being said, a win is a win! Forca Sporting, hopefully Paciencia will continue to grow the team, and get Sporting back where it should be, as a serious contender for the Portuguese title.
Great work by all Portuguese sides in Europe this week!
FORCA!!!!!!!
Good win for Sporting, but now they need to translate that level of play to their domestic game.
Overall a solid win on the road and it looks like the win last week did them the world of good. Looks like Capel and Insua as well as Wolfswinkel turned out to be quality signings. Anybody aware of whats happened to Jeffren? I think the kids got talent and will be a great asset down the right flank.
On a side note: What happened with the Djalo transfer. Last I heard it was in fact denied,is he sitting on the bench?
Forca Sporting! Continua a lutar e os resultados vao melhorar!
Another great result for Portuguese football..
Sporting are finally showing signs of form i think they will improve from here and get more confidence however i still think they need much more time to challenge Benfica and Porto who are looking world class at the moment. Still going around beating the smaller clubs is good for Sporting since a) they will be getting wins and b) they will get a huge confidence boost by the time they start to verse better clubs.
Again good job boys im very happy this week.
It's good to hear that the players were into this one from the beggining, but I didn't get to see it so I'll reserve some judgement.
This team needs to get into a rhythm and catch momentum, but a couple of things concern me. Patricio has to have better concentration and not pick up a ball that he shouldn't. It doesn't matter if Gooch was fouled or not, obviously the whistle didn't blow. I don't know if it was a bang bang type of play, but he can't put his team at risk like that.
It's always a concern when you give shots that come off the woodwork. There's has to be better closing on the shooter.
All in all, Capel is obviously playing well and his partnership with Insua looks like it will be a fruitfull one.
I was also happy to see that Rubio got a look.
Like I said, great win, and hopefully it will translate to league play and send them on their way.
I would love to hear from Sportinguistas and have their thoughts on this one.
