Braga beat Birmingham to reach knockout phase of Europa League

Braga 1-0 Birmingham

Hugo Viana is all smiles after scoring against BirminghamIt was far from a vintage performance but Braga got the job done as Hugo Viana’s deflected shot early in the second half gave the Arsenalistas a 1-0 victory against Birmingham City at the AXA Stadium tonight. The win guarantees a place in the next phase of the competition for last season’s beaten finalists.

Braga came into the match on the back of an arduous sequence of matches against Benfica, Sporting and FC Porto. The draining nature of those encounters, both psychologically and physically, was evident as Birmingham completely overran the hosts for the first 15 minutes.

Quim to the rescue

With Burke causing all sorts of problems to the home defence down the right flank, the Blues had plenty of chances to take an early lead, none better than in the 12th minute when a crass mistake by Ewerton to give the ball away to Elliot was compounded by a subsequent foul in the box for a clear-cut penalty. Quim was equal to the task however, producing a fine diving stop to keep out Zigic’s spot kick.

Ewerton, who was now on a yellow, was somewhat fortunate not to be sent off moments later as he halted another dangerous Birmingham attack with a crude foul. With the visitors piling on the pressure, veteran Quim showed he continues to be one of Portugal’s finest goalkeepers with excellent saves in quick succession from a Murphy free-kick and a Fahey header.

Having somehow survived a torrid opening, Braga at last began to get a foothold in the match. With Helder Barbosa showing little of his good early season form and Alan also quiet, it was left to Mossoro and the unsung Salino to push Braga forward. However, a powerful Lima shot off target and a wasted opportunity by Barbosa were the only threats the home side could muster in the first half.

Viana breakthrough

The Guerreiros do Minho were celebrating six minutes into the second half as Braga took the lead. Hugo Viana’s firm 25-yard effort was directed towards Boaz Myhill’s left-hand post, but took a wicked deflection and sped along the ground into the opposite corner of the net beyond the goalkeeper’s despairing dive.

The goal did not trigger a significant improvement in Braga’s play, but the Portuguese side were now looking more solid at the back and dangerous on the counter-attack. On 81 minutes Braga seemed certain to score as Lima led a rapid counter-attack. The Brazilian’s effort was saved by Myhill and Cesar knocked the rebound over of a gaping net.

Matter it did not as Braga held on comfortably to do the double over Birmingham and extend their recent hold over English opposition. In the last five meetings against English sides Braga have won four and drawn one and conceded just one goal.

Braga now travel to Belgium for their last Group H game. In the other group game tonight Club Brugge produced a sensational comeback to beat Maribor 4-3. The Belgians were 3-0 down with 15 minutes remaining and their unlikely triumph means Braga now have to win at the Jan Breydel Stadium in a fortnight’s time to finish top of the group.

Leonardo Jardim, Braga coach:

“The first fifteen minutes were really poor from Braga. We were nervous, lost the ball too much and were not at our normal level. But we were lucky, because in our worst period our opponents didn’t manage to take any of their many chances.

“Afterwards we improved and ended up justifying the result. We have achieved our first aim of the season, which was to reach the round of 32. We’ll see what the draw throws up and take it game by game.”

Braga:
Quim, Leandro Salino, Paulo Vinicius, Ewerton, Elderson (Douglao, 68), Djalma, Hugo Viana, Alan, Mossoro (Fran Merida, 84), Helder Barbosa (Paulo Cesar, 69), Lima

Goals:
[1-0] Hugo Viana, 51

Jardim has done a good job with what he has. Last season you where praising Lima and how a great striker he was and how Porto where after him, also that Benfica's strikers where nothing compared to him, but this year Nuno is your number one.
Make up your mind.
Win is importante but...

Jardim has to go. The guy loves Lima too much when Lima never scores :S... Nuno Gomes is the best scorer yet he is benched?
Jon great post made for some nice reading..

Some of you must be wondering about Bryan's abssence but he really only posts on Benfica threads so not to worry.

I always believed Braga had a nice Jardim.. and the fruits are paying off.. I expect another long run.. although you gotta love Sporting & what Paciencia is doing there.. so hopefully both will go deep in my quest to supercede the most boring and corrupt league on the planet.. Snoria A

Forca Portugal..
Surprised

Surprised to see Os Bracarenses make such hard work of beating Birmingham but a win's a win and they all count at the end of the day. I fancy Braga to win in Brugge.
It's a win

Thanks for the article and the great posts, since I didn;t watch it.
I'm actually impressed that Braga has been able to hold up as well as they have after Paciencia left.

A win is a win, and this one is huge. They might have been lucky to notch the win, but they were unlucky in other areas.
Brugge was down tp Maribor 3-0 before coming back and scoring 4 goals in less than the final 20 minutes.
Braga could still win the group outright with a win at Brugge. The road win will be necessary due to Braga losing to Brugge 2-1 when home.
Let's hope than can notch 1st place in the group. I still have faith in the aldeia.

Jardim is doing a good job with this Braga squad, but it is clear that they are not that great this year. Lima has a good shot with both feet and he works very hard, but he is far from a good goal scorer. Barbosa is very inconsistent and Alan is getting older and older. Mossoro is a good player, but Braga has very little in terms of creativity in the final third. Viana and Djamal are a strong partnership, but if they are hurt, who can replace them?

Silvio was extremely important for Braga last season and they really miss him. I have never been impressed with Elderson, and it's clear that he is average at best. The trio of Rodriguez, Moises, and Paulao were excellent for Braga over the last 2 years, but now they're left with Ewerton and Vinicius. At right back, Baiano is a decent player, but he is not as solid as Miguel Garcia.

Artur was great for Braga last season and Quim looks like a good relpacement.

If Braga want to continue to build on what they've already started, they need to get better players. Pizzi and Henrique should come back from loan and they should look to pick out some of the better players in Portugal's more modest 1st division clubs.
Europa League

Well done to Braga for qualifying... but it wasn't great, I saw the match on British TV and it was a poor spectacle really, i wonder if anyone is still under the impression that Braga are serious competitors with Portugal's top 3 this season? On this evidence i seriously doubt it, Birmingham (from the English second division) were unlucky to get nothing from the match. Braga will continue to be hard to break down for opposing teams, but I don't think they have the attacking guile or firepower to repeat last season's success. Still, good for the Portuguese Euro coefficient with both their remaining teams progressing further in this tournament.

I think Sporting though have a good chance to win this competition if they continue the impressive progress they've been making. The Europa league is a good opportunity for teams to win a major title, in other words much more of a realistic target than winning the Champions league for many clubs, and i'm surprised how some clubs shrug it off and play their reserve teams in this competition. Sporting should take it seriously because they could do it with the team they have. Pacienca went close last year with a less talented squad, could he go one further this year?
Fantastico!

I'm SCB got the win and can progress into the next stage. I didn't see the game but from the article they should have done better against a lower level team.
