Lions sail to easy victory

Sporting 2-0 FC Zurich

BojinovSporting ensured they would finish top of Group D of the Europa League with victory over FC Zurich thanks to goals from Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Valeri Bojinov (pictured).

After the past weekend's disappointment in defeat to Benfica, Sporting looked to beat Zurich at the Alvalade to definitively plant themselves at the top of their group. Domingos Paciencia made a couple of changes to his side, mostly due to injuries. Valeri Bojinov started and Andre Martins was handed his full Sporting debut.

After an energetic start to the game Sporting started to control possession. Valeri Bojinov forced a superb save out of Johnny Leoni before the Swiss goalkeeper had to follow up Daniel Carrico's effort.

Dutch combination

Sporting took the lead after just 15 minutes when Stijn Schaars played a lovely throughball into the path of his fellow Dutchman, Ricky van Wolfswinkel. The striker took his shot well with a low drive past Leoni.

The goal put Sporting firmly in control as they passed the ball around the full width of the pitch well with Andre Martins, making his first ever start for Sporting, looking very assured on the ball.

Although Sporting had plenty of possession they were wasteful in front of goal and as the first half drew to an end it was FC Zurich having the majority of the ball.

The second half started off in the same fashion as the first and Sporting soon regained control of the game. The first chance after the restart came to Sporting as Oguchi Onyewu's header from a corner was cleared off the line.

Capel assist

Sporting doubled their lead after 58 minutes when Diego Capel's superb cross found the head of Valeri Bojinov who headed home from close range.

Immediately after the second goal Domingos Paciencia took Capel off, with perhaps Monday's Taca de Portugal fixture with Belenenses in mind, and replaced him with Bruno Pereirinha.

The two-goal margin was enough for Sporting although they were unlucky not to add another goal on top of that tally. Substitute Andre Santos had a shot well saved and seconds later Andre Martins came with a whisker of putting the ball at Ricky van Wolfswinkel's feet for what would have been a certain goal.

Zurich were simply unable to retain the ball against a Sporting side that were perhaps made more determined by Saturday's derby defeat. Indeed, goalkeeper Marcelo Boeck will realise his clean sheet was one he didn't have to break a sweat for.

The win means the forthcoming game in Rome to face Lazio has become an absolute dead rubber for Sporting who can afford to rest players and focus on the two league fixtures that sandwich that game.

Domingos Paciencia will be happy with his side’s performance, in particular Andre Martins was solid on his first ever Sporting start and Valeri Bojinov proved he can score when called upon.

Sporting:
Marcelo Boeck, Joao Pereira, Onyewu, Polga, Insua, Andre Martins, Daniel Carrico, Schaars (Andre Santos, 68), Bojinov, Van Wolfswinkel (Diego Rubio, 74), Diego Capel (Pereirinha, 60)

Goals:
[1-0] Wolfswinkel, 15
[2-0] Bojinov, 58

I have been a Sporting man for the last 30 years. But the amount of below average skill foreigner players in the team leaves me cold. We have national talent why are they not displayed?

I was at the game and André Martins impressed me. He seems an intelligent player with a good eye for a pass and the ability to execute it. He was a bit quiet at times but I think he has a good future ahead of him.
Great for Sporting and Portugal

Now everybody will love Joao Pereira once he is sold. The same thing happened to Raul Meireles. Everybody was bashing him while he was playing at Porto, and now nobody would omit him from the starting lineup. We all know that Joao is not the best, even I think Salvio is better, but nobody gives credit for his work. Only once he got recognition is Europe will somebody here come out and praise him. P.s., he played very well last night.

Joao Pereira is an absolute gun, every time he runs it looks good and he doesnt really make those silly little mistakes, his worst game is still not usually that bad, those are the players i look for.

I also like Andre Martins i want both him and Santos to get more of a run.

Schaars and Bojinov are both good players but they also do things that really frustrate me at times but they can both pull a good play out of their butt if they need to.

Yep i heard about it but currently its hust rumour (maybe agent trying to make some money) Barcelona scout lots of players as all the tops clubs do so it may or may not happen. Unless Portgoal post it i would pay much attention plus i am not sure i would want him to go and sit on the Barca bench dani alves will be hard to defrone because unlike Joao he is an attacking weapon and scores goals like a winger and fits Barcas style perfectly. Psg would also be a step down from Sporting they are just a bag on money because of the rich owners but they have a long way to go i mean they are struggling in Europa. Anyways i think a move to Spain could be ok if its a team like Valencia malaga who will be in the chaps league and he has a great chance to play but if hes gonna sit on the bench for the sake of the seleccao better he stays put for now plus Sporting is doing great but i have to ask why are their players on such low min release values wolf is like 15 mill and i think Joao is only 7 also they got stooged for Djalo nice just sold him at a profit without even playing a game. Even though he is not technical is is perfect for an english wing because he is fast. Finally we gained ground on italy and france and challengers Ukraine are falling way behind who know maybe we can get 4th in co- efficients althoigh belguim has come with a rush this year so far

What do you guys think?

Andre Martins does look very talented.

Did anyone else hear about Barcelona's interest in Joao Pereira. They currently don't have a back-up for Dani Alves, so Joao Pereira is on their Christmas wishlist. PSG, AC Milan, Tottenham, and Villareal among other clubs are also reportedly interested in Pereira. He is a very under-rated player so he could definitely play for any of the teams mentioned. But for the sake of the national team, I hope he picks a team where he'll start so I'm hoping that he doesn't go to Barcelona.
This Andre Martins is going to be a star

Sporting always looked in control and played well! This team really has quality and depth. Paciencia is a great manager, doing a marvelous job! Way to win the group comfortably and go on to the next round with momentum! I really think this Sporting team this year is capable of doing great things! Keep it up Sporting!!!
