Wolfswinkel and Patricio see Sporting into the Europa League semi-finals

Metalist 1-1 Sporting (agg. 2-3)

Rui PatricioSporting drew 1-1 in Ukraine against Metalist tonight to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they will play Spanish side Athletic Bilbao. Ricky van Wolfswinkel put the Lions ahead on the night on the stroke of half time. Cristaldo equalised in the second half for the hosts, who then had a penalty saved by Rui Patricio who put in another magnificent display for the Portuguese side.

In the absence of the suspended Daniel Carrico, the injured Rinaudo and the ineligible Elias, Sporting coach Sa Pinto pulled off a surprise with his starting XI, drafting in talented Portuguese midfielder Andre Martins for a rare start in an apparently attacking line-up.

Whether or not that was the intention, in practice it was the hosts who took control of proceedings from the outset, dominating the first half. Two early headers, one drawing a save out of Patrico, the other looping over the bar, served warning that Sporting could be in for a difficult night. For all their possession Patricio was first called into serious action on the half hour mark, beating away an angled drive from Cleiton Xavier.

Danger-man Taison

As at the Alvalade in the first leg, the hugely impressive Taison was the instigator of most of Metalist’s most dangerous moments. The Brazilian was close to breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute as he skipped past Polga and Xandao. Bearing down on goal he looked certain to score, but shot too close to Patricio who made an excellent stop with his legs.

Save a weak Joao Pereira shot, Sporting had been completely inoffensive, but on the stroke of half time the Portuguese side struck a crucial blow to the hopes of the Ukrainians. Diego Capel picked up the ball on the left corner of the box and floated a wonderful cross onto the head of Wolfswinkel, who made no mistake with a well directed header across goalkeeper Goryainov and into the net.

Instead of requiring one goal to take the lead in the tie, Metalist now had to score two to force extra time. There seemed little chance of that as Sporting played out the first ten minutes of the second period without alarm.

But a fine combination between Devic and Cristaldo led to a goal for the latter in the 57th minute and suddenly it was game on again. With the capacity crowd urging the home team on, Metalist were now asking serious questions of the Sporting defence. Patricio saved superbly from a rasping Xavier shot but as the ball ballooned intot the air Insua was adjudged to have fouled Devic for a penalty.

Patricio saves penalty

Up stepped Xavier, who had beaten Patricio from the spot last week at the Alvalade. This time the Portugal number one won the duel, saving with his legs to keep Sporting’s noses in front in the tie.

The penalty miss proved pivotal as Sporting gradually took the sting out of the tiring Metalist attacks, aided in no small measure by substitutes Renato Neto, Andre Santos and Evaldo, all of whom contributed positively after coming on.

Metalist resorted to pumping crosses and long balls into the box, but after what seemed like a never-ending period of stoppage time, the referee blew his whistle for the final time to trigger wild celebrations among the Sporting players and coaching staff.

Sporting are in the semi-finals of a European competition for the fifth time in their history. They will play Basque side Athletic Bilbao in Lisbon in the first leg on 19 April, with the decisive match in Spain one week later.

You don't seem to like to hear about Benfica's not so good finishes in the past. Why does that bother you? I fail to see how bringing up poor table performances by Benfica in the past is stirring up trouble. Again, I am bringing up past facts to defend Sporting from Benfiquistas poking fun at Sporting's current position. Have you ever heard the saying "Don't throw stones at glass houses"? So, when Benfica supporters laugh about us being in fifth, again I will say, at least we were never sixth. It's like a broken record. I have no problem with realizing that Sporting should be doing better. Also, your comment that I can live in the past is ridiculous. Really? What does that have to do with anything? I feel sad that you are so troubled by all this and that it has angered you so. Even my friends and family who are passionate Benfiquistas have seen this exchange and laughed.

Thats fine while other teams are challenging for the championship you can look back and worry about the past. I guess the past is all you have when your present is looking so woefull. Me can't handle the truth, are you kidding me? I could not care less what you say or what facts you have i dont support Benfica and usually dont reply to one person but when you say "There is absolutely no need to drag Benfica into this and stir up trouble." and then add to it by doing the exact same thing.
ironic

Ironic how all you benfiqueefas called me a troll yet you do the same thing after you get knocked out of your tourney and we advance. If youre honest Bilbao and man city are better than chelsea. Benfiquistas are similar to Cules except the cules actually win.

How am I acting like a douche? I am simply responding to people criticizing Sporting's current table position. There is nothing wrong with bringing up the past either, and I will continue doing so. I also am not being "high and mighty" as you put it because, I have and never will have a problem with Benfica and I have repeatedly posted on this site that I want them to do well. However, when people trash the club that I love, I will respond by bringing up facts. So, when Benficistas say that Sporting is struggling to stay in fifth in a condescending way, I will bring up the past and say that at least we've never come in sixth. Why do you have a problem with that? Can't handle the truth?
sorry for the zinger

But I really hate you Portista's and Sportingista's who put the onus on Benfica at all times. I always congratulate another chop team, whether its for beating us or for whatever else they have acheived as of late. But I will not allow people, especially anonymous trolls, to rip Benfica needlessly or otherwise make innaccurate and misleading comments about my team.
You guys who see the light are absolutely correct. This discussion should be about SPC and this triumph that helps turn around an otherwise dismal season, and nothing else. Leave Porto and Benfica out of it. One or two mental midgets always have to ruin it, sorry I took the bait yesterday. BTW, you should have read the comment on the Benfica thread that they refused to print, LOL!
Absolutely, I would like nothing more than to see SPC triumph in the Europa against all odds and raise that trophy! Such a win would go a long way towards putting Portuguese soccer and SPC back on the map. It is good for the Liga. That being said, leave Benfica (and Porto) out of it and enjoy your day in the sun.
Proud of the Lions

As a Benfica fan, i'm proud of Sporting. I hope they win the Europa League so they can do Portugal proud!

Forca Sporting! Forca Rui Patricio! What a game from Portugal's number one. It's nice that he's in good form ahead of the Euros in two months. Unfortunately, I think Portugal will have to rely on him more often than not to make those same awesome saves to help them get through the group of death.

Bilbao is a tough opponent for SCP in the semifinals. I watched them a little bit against Manchester United, and they honestly never looked in danger of losing. They are particularly strong in attack with Spanish internationals Iker Muniain and Fernando Llorente leading the way. Defensively, however, I think Sporting can create some chances and it will be important for them to take those chances and put Bilbao on the back foot early. If they can do that, I think SCP will have a chance. If not, Bilbao could overwhelm Sporting's own suspect defense. To be honest, if Metalist had finished better (and Rui Patricio not had a blinder of a game) I think Sporting would be out. There were numerous opportunities for them to completely overrun Sporting and they just didn't have the class to pull it off. Bilbao does have that class, so Sporting is going to have to do better, particularly on defense.

I'll be a homer.....Sporting wins 2-1 in the first leg and holds on for a 2-2 draw in the second leg in Bilbao. Forca Sporting!
LOL! @ Sam

You should be content with Sporting this year, since 3rd-4th place is what Sporting has been reaching in the last couple of years! LOL! How many years has it been "rebuilding" season for Sporting? LOL! Sounds like the Toronto Maple Leafs!
@Bubba Zanetti
28 Friday, 06 April 2012 23:56
Dont act like your above all this comparing sporting and benfica and acting high and mighty then you do the exact same thing that this fool Sam did. You know what the difference is you have to go back to the past to talk about weak seasons from Benfica, Sporting is coming 5th in the present. Benfica fixed their problems, Sporting have not, so dont you worry about Benficas previous records worry about your own.

Sam Harris may be a douche but atleast he isnt acting like his not one. Infact im sure he even knows he is one since he had to copy stats that were already put up by other people to make his arguement.
Great Achievement By Sporting!

So happy and proud of Sporting for reaching the Semi Finals of the Europa League! This team makes me very proud and I believe that anything is possible for them! They will play against Atletic Bilbao which is a good team as well, but this Sporting team has great team spirit and belief and strength of character, and if they give it their best I believe they can go on to reach the final! This team has been doing us proud with Sa Pinto and reaching this far in two competitions is great! I wish them all the best and great success for the remainder of the season! I already believe that we've built a good foundation and that Sporting can go on to become stronger and stronger now and in the following seasons! FORCA SPORTING!!!
Why so offended?
26 Friday, 06 April 2012 21:52
Benfica had the same amount of players come in? benfica bought 15 players last summer? I don't remember that. It must be a faith thing. As I remember last year fabio coentrao crying like a baby to get to the europa league final. Must mean nothing. The fact of the matter is this is a building year for Sporting and 4th-5th which I i doubt 5th will happen because it has never happened in sportings history (6th has happened to benfica though and in your lifetime mdot unlike the eusebio days) Is perfectly fine for me with a possible taca portugal and europa league semi finals after eliminating manchester city.

Do not how ever be angry at me because I am very content and satisfied with my teams year and you are unhappy watching benfica squander theirs. Lol to you my friends!
SPORTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

another poor call by a ref against a Portuguese team

what was up with that penalty call? what a joke. it'd be nice to see competent officiating from UEFA for once.
Seriously
23 Friday, 06 April 2012 16:17
I am very happy that we are in the position that we are in and I am very happy with the congratulatory posts from Benfica supporters. There is absolutely no need to drag Benfica into this and stir up trouble. Sporting's continued advancement in the EL has nothing to do with Benfica and their CL campaign which unfortunately ended, when it could have very easily progressed.

Regarding Sporting's current position in the league, it is what it is, a rebuilding period and they will challenge again soon, like they always have. Every team goes through their ups and downs. So, to the Benfica supporters who are bashing Sporting for being fifth, would it be fair to bash Benfica for when they were down like back in 2001 when Benfica struggled to finish 6th in the league or in 2002 and 2008 when they finished fourth in the league? Or when Benfica was crippled by Vale e Azevedo? Again, every club goes through their ups and downs.

Bring on the Derby.
Context
22 Friday, 06 April 2012 15:15
Sporting fans should be very pleased and excited by making the quarter finals of Europa. It's a good achievement. And, in a season where Sporting find themselves in 5th place in Liga, it is something to celebrate. I don't see any Sporting fan celebrating outside of that context.

Benfica is having a better season. Only an idiot would argue different. For a Benfica fan to come here and create a straw man argument about Europa v. Champions is just sad.

Benfica need to worry about this:

1 FC Porto 25 60
2 Benfica 25 59
3 Braga 25 58

Or, in the end, the list of Benfica accomplishments in will equal the list of Sporting accomplishments. Nada.
Congrats

Congrats Sporting Fans! A well deserved win!
Don't spoil Sportings moment
20 Friday, 06 April 2012 13:23
This should be all about congratulating Sporting. But, Sam has to spill vile and get Benfica into the conversation. Another poster to ignore.

As for Sporting, fantastic job. Maybe it's about time a little fortune came their way. Great job all around, especially after it seemed as if it was all falling apart.
Memo to Sam Harris
19 Friday, 06 April 2012 13:09
Your team can could actually win the Europa and it still would not equate to a CL quarterfinal appearance. Are you kidding bro? Fifth place in the Liga and you wanna talk about the Europa League quarters? With that roster and no prospects for a decent sale in the summer, exactly where do you think this team is going?? As Mdot said, its going to be a long summer, as you sift the dregs of south american football for affordable players that you can actually convince to come to Portugal and play on that pathetic excuse for a field. Stop being delusional my man.
Few points

Firstly Parabens Sporting! I wasn't able to watch the match so can't really comment on what happened, but a good result for them. Metalist are clearly a tough team and have been pushing the top 2 in Ukraine...so a great result for Sporting to grind out. Our Liga will be represented in the semis which is great. Athletic Bilbao in recent weeks have looked the best team in the competition and will be real tough, but Sporting at their best can definitely get past them. Should be a close and exciting encounter!

Secondly, all these Benfica-haters like Sam and Bryan just have to keep bringing up our club, even in articles unrelated to them...they are clearly all enamoured with Benfica haha! This article was about Sporting, why the references to SLB? Idiots is all i can say!!!

Lastly, yes Rui Patricio is having a strong finish to the season and this is good news for the seleccao. I have been critical of him but he's been proving me wrong lately. Also good for him and Joao Perreira to get a taste of playing at this stadium in Kharkiv already, because they will be returning to play there this summer in the Euros, and we will all hope for similar good performances! Once again, Parabens!!
PARABENS Sporting

Congratulations SCP,

Never expected Sporting to beat Manchester City over two games, let alone reach the semi-final. There were a tense few moments in the game against Metallist, but Sporting showed nerve and determination to strive past.
Well done, a great achievement to all the players and staff. For only the 5th time in the clubs history have they made it a European semi-final. A true achievement. All the the best for the game against, Atletico.
Sportinguistas can raise the heads high today... Congratulations!! Vivo o Sporting
@ Sam

LOL! I'd perfer the last 8 CL over a Europa League Semi Final. Only you would think the opposite, since its the best Sporting can do. Good Luck playing in the CL next year! Oh wait... Nevermind ;)
Paint Lisbon green....
15 Friday, 06 April 2012 03:11
for the day only. It was great to watch the game with Sporting, Porto, and Benfica fans all cheering for the same result. Congrats Sportinguistas.

Sam, stop hating yourself and maybe you can see what the majority of us see. Its all about Portuguese success in Europe dude. Maybe Bryan SCB has taken another alias.

Sempre SLB!

This year final four: 3 spanish 1 portuguese

Sam, just shut up please. Benfica tried their best with everything against them to make the semi finals. We were clearly robbed thats what you haters don't seem to mention. I'm very happy for Sporting to progress I just wish all Portuguese would support our teams in Europe. Sporting would of lost if not for Patricio.

LOL, keep it up buddy it's cracking me up. I'll gladly take our amazing performances over United and that nice run in the CL, getting awarded the CL final in our stadium in two years, and having a shot at another liga title, all the while prepping for another season in the CL next year over your club's current fight in 5th place with a hope to hold on to an EL place.

Again good luck in the EL, I'll always cheer for chop teams in Europe but I love the weak attempts at trying to paint Sporting's season as anything close to our successes so far.

Also the rebuilding thing is a joke since we had the same number of new players come to our club but with greater success. Looks like it will be another summer of big money for Benfica to keep growing the club and likely another season where Sporting can't afford to fix their second division looking field.
oh the shame
11 Friday, 06 April 2012 00:17
Sam Harriss...bitter benfica fan after getting humiliated by an aging chelsea.... HAHAHHA
Rui Patricio
10 Thursday, 05 April 2012 23:49
Wow, Rui Patricio had yet another brilliant game. I still wouldn't rate him as a world class keeper just yet, but he is getting better and better. In terms of pure shot stopping, Patricio is definitely among the best of the best, and he is definitely been improving his set piece/crossing goal keeping. Hopefully, he'll play like this in the Euros!

I was impressed with Metalist in the first leg, so I knew that this was going to be a tricky game. Metalist seemed to be playing with much more intensity and energy than Sporting, and if it wasn't for Rui Patricio, Sporting could have been eliminated. The center-back paring is definitely pretty shaky, and if they play the way they did today, they'll have a very hard time against any of the Spanish sides left in the competition.
I will go further for my benfica friends...
9 Thursday, 05 April 2012 23:37
What is better liga europa semi finals with a injury ridden new look sporting during a building year or a sad bow out to a chaotic old chelsea side with a benfica team that has hit its plateau?
Sam Harris
8 Thursday, 05 April 2012 23:26
LOL ok loser, good effort in trying to talk as if Sporting fans want the semi's of the EL over the quarters of the CL. Congrats to Sporting and hopefully they can use some of the EL money to try to get their team into the main show by trying to catch up with the current big 3.
Thanks Rui

Rui Patricio saved SCP here, no question about it.

They went in with a defensive mentality, which I never advise. But luckily Patricio was there to save the day. In terms of offensive, Capel looked good, and Wolfwinkel's header was beautiful. Other than that, Metalist actually played a better game. Good thing the first leg result was there as insurance.

I'm happy that SCP had made it this far, but I am still envious that Benfica made it to the CL quarterfinals, if for no other reason because there is exponentially more money awarded for Champions League games than Europa League matches, which Sporting badly, badly needs at this point. Hopefully they can go through to the final, and it will provide some money and morale to build for a strong run in the league next year.

Forca Rui Patricio,
Forca Sporting
my dream
6 Thursday, 05 April 2012 23:14
I guess my wish came through!! all I wanted was a tie and they did it. I am very proud of sporting players and coach! yes next match will be tough but since we beat MCity anything is possible, they can still save the season with good play in europa league and win the Taca!!
Sportinguistas are due or should I say overdue!!
FORCA SPORTING!
Patricioooooooo

Man of the match no question defended the penalty, bailed out Sporting on number of times. Metalist threw everything at him and he was remarkable. He may be in the best form of his career, and that could very well be great news for Portugal since Euros are around the corner. Congrats to Sa Pinto and his players, has them believing they can play to get the results tthey need. A lot of credit to him and his Sporting side they have overachieved in my opinion. Wish Sporting conituied success and who knows they are in the semis. Bilboa will be tough as they are playing great but now that Sporting have come this far maybe they go the distance
What is better
4 Thursday, 05 April 2012 22:56
Last 8 of the champions league or last four of the europa league and still playing...atleast sporting isnt pretending to be part of a class that they clearly dont belong in.
Congrats!
3 Thursday, 05 April 2012 22:52
Patricio the hero, let's hope he can stop some penalties for the Euros because we always seem to face a penalty shot.
Pay Patricio
2 Thursday, 05 April 2012 21:42
Is Sporting in negotiations to sign Patrio long term? 1 Million Euro per? Do it!

World class effort today with little form around him.

Capel's cross was beautiful.

Otherwise, Sporting did little to organize when they possesed the ball in the first half and possessed little in the second half.

Will need better form in the Semis.
SCP! SCP!

Great result for the Lions. Patricio man of the match, no question. Looks like an all Iberian semi-final.
