Almeida makes goalscoring return to action

Europa League round-up

Hugo Almeida marked his return from injury with a goal in Werder Bremen’s 2-0 win over Austria Vienna as the Germans secured their place in the next round.

The Portuguese, out of action since August, was brought on as a half time substitute with the score level at 0-0. Tim Borowski put the hosts ahead with less than tem minutes remaining, before Almeida sealed the points with a smart turn and finish with his left foot from inside the area three minutes later.

Eliseu was handed a rare start and went on to play the full ninety minutes for Lazio against Villarreal, but the Portuguese was on the losing side as Serie A outfit were hammered 4-1 in Spain. The game was also notable for two red cards, with Lazio having Roberto Baronio dimissed after just three minutes, while Gonzalo Rodgriguez seeing red for the home side with a little over half an hour played.

CFR Cluj manager Antonio Conceicao selected three Portuguese players in his starting line-up as his side had two men sent off and conceded a last-gasp winner to lose 3-2 at home to Sparta Prague. Nuno Claro, in goal, was joined in the team by Tony and Ricardo Cadu, while Andre Leao and Dani were unused substitutes. Having come from 2-0 down to draw level in stoppage time, Cluj conceded with 95 minutes on the clock to end the evening with nothing.

Almani Moreira’s Partizan bowed out of the competition after a 4-2 home defeat to Club Brugge, with the former Boavista man playing the full ninety minutes for the Serbian champions. Paulo Machado was withdrawn after 66 minutes in France as his Toulouse side were beaten 2-0 at home by holders Shakhtar Donetsk.

Forward Rui Miguel was thrown on during the second half by CSKA Sofia, but could not prevent the Bulgarians from going down to a 3-1 defeat at FC Basel, who were without Carlitos, in Switzerland. Goalkeeper Pedro Taborda was on the bench as his FC Timisoara, of Romania, lost 3-1 to Anderlecht in Belgium, while Miguel was not involved as Valencia were held 2-2 at Slavia Prague.
