Jesus feels Marseille are no pushover

Benfica v Marseille preview

jorge_jesus_pressconference.jpgThe Europa League Round of Sixteen kicks off tomorrow night and the tie of the round, arguably, will go down at the Estadio da Luz as two of Europe's high fliers are set to do battle.

Benfica will host Marseille in the first leg and the Luz has not been a welcoming place for the opposition as the Aguias have scored a total of 17 goals at home, while only suffering one in five matches.

But despite their impressive home form, Benfica boss Jorge Jesus had nothing but praise for his French counterparts, who easily disposed of FC Kobenhagen in the previous round, and doesn't think that his side will be able to repeat of any of their previous performances against OM.

"Marseille arrived from the Champions League, in a group which included AC Milan and Real Madrid and they had some great results, despite not qualifying for the knockout stages," said Jesus exaltingly.

"Marseille are a strong team with players who are points of references in various sectors, like Lucho who has great influence in the construction of their offence. Niang is very fast and strong in attack, and he is the leading goalscorer in the French championship. We are very familiar with Mareille as they are with Benfica."

"With the quality of both teams, this match will be hard fought. With or without goals, the two teams have arguments to do so, here at the Luz or in Marseille (at the Velodrome). The team who commits the least amount of errors and who is better defensively will be the one who advances."

Asked what would be his preferred result against the French juggernaut , Jesus stared at the reporter, smiled and said jokingly, "5-0."

Sorry smart guy not a porto fan but if you wanna think a team in the final 16 of the champions league would have any sort of jealousy towards a team In the europa league I think your logic is a bit off.....btw I hope you 2 girls hit it off on your date....

I'm a Benfiquista and was upset to see Porto go out like that. On the Euro scale we must unite and support fellow portuguese. If you're ever in South Florida Mdot, give me a shout so I can buy you a pint!

Surprise, surprise... I'm noticing some bitter Porto fans popping their heads out hoping that Portuguese teams do bad in Europe. Honestly, I can understand why your upset and us SLB fans don't expect you to cheer for our team in the league but show some Portuguese pride by supporting Benfica and Sporting in Europe. I know I was going around joking with my English lads about Porto beating Arsenal and in the end I got some egg on my face for it but that's what you do.

Behind Liverpool and Juventus? Unlike those teams, Benfica is having an amazing season. Best defense shown so far in the tournament and one of the top goal scoring teams. I agree that they should get 2 to 3 goals this first leg. The key is not to get scored on.

There are lots of great games and thisis obviously one of them. I think 2 or 3-0 is a little optimistic but a win is definitely on the cards. I'm hoping that they have two tough games with extra time in the second leg knowing that the quarter finals come up straight after the Braga game.
The tie of the round for me has got to be Valencia-Werder Bremen. Two tactically sound teams and lots of talent on show.

Benfica are fourth favourites behind Liverpool, Juventus and Valencia. In fairness anyone of about 7 or 8 teams could win this competition. Liverpool and Juventus have been horrid this season so I think we will see someone different from those two winning it..

The rematch of 1990's Champions League semi-final match. Ever since Benfica's win from the weekend I couldn't wait to see this match happen, but now it's here! The key to success is not to concede any goals but I am confident that we can score a couple goals. Sou Benfica!!

Indeed it is a great match-up..But we play first leg at home which is in our favor because you know the stats...We are undefeated at home and have scored 17 goals in the few matches we've had there...It's going to be a really good match...A lot tougher than the Hertha series..But I'm sure our Aguias will play really well. We've been on fire in the Liga Sagres and Europa League..Forca Benfica!!!
Best match-up

This is one of the more exciting European match-ups this week. Benfica have to be careful but I think they can come away with 2-0 or 3-0 in the first leg. The key is not getting scored on.
