Last-gasp goal denies Benfica win

Benfica 1-1 Marseille

MarseilleBenfica badgeA 90th-minute header by Ben Arfa denied Benfica victory in a high quality match played at the Estadio da Luz tonight, after Maxi Pereira had given the Eagles the lead 15 minutes from the end.

It finished one-one, but it could easily have been 3-3 or more with both teams spurning plenty of chances
.

Benfica 1-1 Marseille

Benfica will be desperately disappointed to have conceded at the death, but perhaps on the balance of play a draw is the fair result. An excellent game of football in Lisbon tonight, particularly in the first half. Marseille will be delighted to escape with a draw and a precious away goal after it seemed they were going down to a narrow defeat. But with the firepower of this Benfica team the tie is far from over.

90 + 2' Final whistle goes.

90' GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Equaliser for Marseille. Fantastic header from Ben Arfa beats the diving Julio Cesar. That could be a crucial blow for the Eagles.

87' Off comes Saviola for Brazilian Eder Luis. Jesus freshens up the attack for the final minutes.

85' Ramires almost scores!!! Fantastic shot almost snaps the crossbar in two with Mandanda completely beaten by the force of the shot.

84' Cardozo's effort flies over the bar.

83' Free-kick won by David Luiz right on the edge of the area in the centre of the goal. Good opportunity. Cardozo takes aim...

81' The game has really opened up now. Saviola and Carlos Martins threaten with dangerous breaks but Marseille survive.

80' Ben Arfur makes a couple of dangerous incursions but Benfica hold firm.

76' Coentrao comes on for Peixoto.

75'GOAL! GOAL!!!!!!!!!!  Di Maria causes panic in  the Marseille rearguard and forces his cross over. After a couple of deflections the ball is poked into the net by Maxi Pereira. The stadium erupts.

73' A subsitution for each side. On comes Ben Arfur for Marseiile. Fabio Coentrao is about to come on but the referee says to wait until the next stoppage.

71' First-time angled shot by Di Maria cleared when it seems to be heading into the bak of the net.

70' Yellow Card Yellow Card for Brandao. Maxi Pereira does well to get past his marker and is brought down by Brandao.

69' Good work by Ramires, who makes room for himself and fires a powerful shot just over.

67' Better from Benfica. Maxi Pereira and Di Maria cause danger down either flank, but the crosses are cut out by the French defence.

65' Yellow Card Yellow Card. Maxi Pereira shows the right-back a yellow for an outrageous dive in the box.

63' Jorge Jesus has seen enough. Aimar comes off for Carlos Martins.

62' Benfica saved by Juliio Cesar! Brandao crosses, Niang heads from close range and the Brazilian goalkeeper makes a spectacular stop, keeping  it out at two attempts.

60' Marseille looking the more likely at this stage.

57' Saviola breaks but the excellent Diawara makes a perfect defensive interception.

56' Cesar Peixoto tries his luck with a hopeful punt from way out. The crowd are getting restless.

55' The  impressive Cheyrou works himself room for a shot. His powerful effort is saved by Julio Cesar at the second attempt.

53' Lack of concentration from Ramires leads to a needless corner. Aimar blocks the cross.

52' Benfica are finding it hard to work up a head of steam. The visitors enjoy a lengthy spell of pressure in the Benfica half.

49' Marseille hit back with Niang having a shot but it's an easy save for Cesar.

48' Ramires hits a fierce shot over the bar.

46' Yellow Card Yellow Card. Ex Porto player Lucho Gonzalez further endears himself to the Benfica crowd by scything down David Luiz and picking up a booking for his troubles.

Excellent half of football. Both teams have looked dangerous going forward and created plenty of chances but no goals as of yet. More of the same in the second period please.

45 + 1' Marseiile break dangerously but magnificent defending from David Luiz snuffs out the danger. The half-time whistle goes,

45' Another let-off the Benfica and it's that man Lucho Gonzalez who shoots wide when it seems easier to score!

44' Next it's Di Maria who comes close, curling a shot just wide.

43' Benfica come close again! Maxi Pereira crosses, Cardozo shoots from close in but his effort is deflected wide.

40' Great chance missed by Benfica! Superb passing movement by the home fans frees Aimar, but with just the goalkeeper to beat Aimar hits his shot weakly and Mandanda stretches to save.

39' Good short passing movement by Benfica. Aimar dinks the ball over the last defender into the path of Saviola, but the striker had stayed offside.

37' Two corners in quick succession for Marseille. The French team have not come to Lisbon to defend.

34' Great chance for Cardozo goes begging! Luisao picks out Di Maria with a raking pass, the Argentine sends over a wonderful cross but the Paraguayan balloons over when well placed to break the deadlock.

32' Interesting dual developing between big Marseille striker Brandao and Benfica right-back Maxi Pereira.

30' Di Maria thunders a super shot from distance that flies just wide. High-quality game at the Luz.

29' Abriel shows nifty skils on the right wing but David Luiz stands up to him well and makes the challenge.

26' Excellent break by Maxi Pereira, but Ramires fails to take advantage. Fantastic combination between Aimar and Saviola only stopped by a last-ditch clearance.

25' Brandao is down injured and Benfica coach Jorge Jesus takes advantage to furiously issue instructions to David Luiz.

22' Benfica reply. Cardozo does well to get on the end of a long looping cross but shoots into the side-netting.

21' Again Marseille a whisker away from taking the lead! Gonzalez again at the heart of the danger, playing in Brandao with a beautiful thoughball. The Brazilian sprints clear but with just Julio Cesar in front of him he screws his shot wide.

20' Ramires is having little joy against the impressive Marseille defence.

19' It's a role reversal as Cardozo crosses for Di Maria whose header is plucked out of the air by Mandanda.

17' Benfica hit straight back. Di Maria crosses and Oscar Cardozo heads not far off target.

16' Incredible let-off for Benfica! A cross breaks to Lucho Gonzalez's feet but from point-blank range the former FC Porto midfielder pokes wide.

15' Excellent cross whipped in from the left by Lucho but a couple of French forwards had strayed offside.

14' Dangerous ball lifted into the box by Lucho. David Luiz intercepts in the nick of time to deny Abriel.

11' Judging by the opening exchanges the two teams appear well-matched. Neither goakeeper yet called into serious action.

8' Aimar threads through a delightful pass to Saviola who falls in a heap under a heavy challenge from Diawara but the referee waves away loud shouts for a foul on the edge of the box.

5' Good break by David Luiz, playing a nice one-two with Aimar to create room for a shot but it's too close to Mandanda who saves easily.

2' Benfica in their traditional kit of red shirts and socks with white shorts. Marseiile clad in light blue from head to foot. Play confined to the midfield in the early stages.

The stadium is filling up nicely, with tens of thousands of red clad fans taking their seats. Vitoria the Eagle helps whip up the crowd with the traditional circling of the stadium and perfect landing on its perch. To further boost the already frenetic atmosphere, the unofficial Seleccao anthem, "I've got a feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas blurts out of the loud speakers. May the action begin.

Starting line-ups

Benfica:
Julio Cesar, Maxi Pereira, Luisao, David Luiz, Cesar Peixoto, Javi Garcia, Ramires, Aimar, Di Maria, Saviola, Cardozo

Marseille:
Mandanda, Bonnart, Diawara, Mbia, Taiwo, Lucho, Cisse, Cheyrou, Abriel, Brandao, Niang

they talk about having more fans then any other team. They should be embarrassed to mention that considering the fact that benfica's debt is bigger then sporting. Keep talking but money doesn't grow on trees.

Porto/Benfica rivalry and Benfica the biggest club?

Let's be honest here...the majority of Benfica fans love it when Porto fail in Europa dn the majority of Porto fans love it when Benfica fail. I'm a Braga fan and I have no secodn club as many people do in Portugal. I hope Benfica go through as it halps Portugal's co-efficient. It also puts Benfica in the quarter finals which come during the week after Benfica play Braga. so it's not a bad thing for Braga if they go through.

As for Benfica having 6 million fans.. There was a recent survey by the FPF and the results show that only 64.5% of the Portuguese population like football. So even though they claim 6 million it's a near impossibility to be true although I do agree that they have by far the largest percentage of support. As for having 200,000 supporters how is that they only managed between 50 and 100 in a UEFA cup/Europa League match last season in Napoli? 200,000 supporters and the only time they have filled the stadium this season was the first game against Maritimo(and possibly the Porto game). 200,000 socios and they had a loss for the first half of the season of about 13m and are consolidating losses of 340million... yes 340,000,000 euro... does that include the 40 or 50 million they had to borrow from teh Benfica Stars Fund? This does not look like the biggest club in the world...

PS good luck for the game next week against Marseille...

You wont need it this weekend.. Did you se the referee? Same referee from the Benfica-Braga game last season...

Paulo if you dont like lex ignore him. Frankly I'm a Porto fan but he's clearly anti- portuguese. By responding back to oli you look even worse. Especially after claiming Porto fans are delusional. We accept our lost but we've been winning for so long. We're bound to lose sometime. Is that delusional? Oli grow up dude. Your right Benfica has been a sack of crap in europe since 1962 but they are turning it around now. So please shut up and let them make us proud this year. Portuguese fans need to get together for the WC. Oli s just here to separate us. Hes more German then Portuguese especially after cheering for hertha instead of benfica..

loss to arsenal. It was a surprise tho because porto have been portugal's dominant force. This however, is not surprising. Benfica always gets knocked out. It's been happening since 1962! The one people that are "delusional" are those who support a club that hasnt won a european title since 1962. It's sad. The best part is minhoto is right. Porto have been holding portugal's uefa coefficient. Whether you like to believe it or not is up to you. Benfica fans over exaggerate to the extreme. First of all, i hope you win in France. You might as well do something this year... youve been holding portugal back since 1962! Second, this league is not won yet. Wait till you face sporting, porto, and braga. Those games will take you back to reality. If you lose the league this year dont come crying about refs. Thats all im going to say.

Cheers.

Well put Paulo. Being brought up with a father (Benfica) and a mother (Sporting) I fully see where you are coming from. I will always support Benfica and pass that on to my children but I’ve kept a soft spot Sporting.

The common item in our family is the disgust in all the bribery that happened over the past 15 years from Porto. It was great to see all of those videos that got leaked with Porto bribing agents and so on.

You still fail to acknowledge Porto's very very pathetic performance their last three games. What are you pretending as though they never happened. Well I suppose that's fitting considering most Porto fans are delusional.

Marsaille palyed very well and as did Benfica. The 2nd game will be another knock down drag'em out and Benfica will come out on top.

Nacional this weekend should be a similar outcome to the game vs. Pacos, but they're are playing a lot of quality games on little rest. Their depth will serve them well over the coming weeks.

Minhoto...you fail to recognize true Benfica, Sporting, and Porto fans are fans of ther FPF. Love of God, Family, Country, and Futebol Clube are some of the passions that we find important. I come from a family of Uncle who support Sporting yet my father raised his three sons to be Benfica supporters. Mind you my Uncles never stopped trying to recruit us, we have and will always remain loyal to the Aguias. Unlike bandwagon supporters like Oliver, A man without a sense of loyalty is no better then a pig who eats their own feces. Minhoto I think we can both acknowledge that many of our countrymen fail to support the countries club's in international competitions. At the end of the day they don't matter now do they.
Too funny

So Porto finally gets close to the same number of World titles as Benfica and now they won stop trash talking. Here's a newsflash minhoto: Benfica are still the number 1# club in Portugal
#1 in fans support
#1 win attendance past and present (even when Porto was winning)
#1 in titles
#1 in present day

Talk about Porto fans living in the past. minhoto if you truly are a Braga fan I would be more worried about Porto paying off the league to have to you kicked out like they did to Boavista, then standing up to these corrupt crooks.

when you win a european title in recent years to come talk to me. As far as im concerned youve been a loser since 1962. Im gald i changed clubs because i was a 50 time loser with Benfica.

yesterday's performance is not surprising. Benfica have been pulling disappointing performance's in europe since 1962. It was surprising that Porto got handled by Arsenal because they are used to being a dominant force for the portuguese league.

Portugal cant rely on Benfica

im a braga supporter and i can see why porto fans hate benfica fans...because your obnoxious and have an undeserved sense of entitlement....sorry guys benfica is no longer one of the biggest clubs in the world(only the second biggest in portugal).....yes benfica was in the cl in 2005/6 and how did they do lol?.....1962 is very relavent because 90% of you wherent around for those years yet act like benfica has been doing it for 50 years lol....Porto is the only reason our coefficient has remaind in the top 10 for the last 10 years.....and if we are going to be honest it was benfica fans talking all kinds of shit before the season even started look at the wikipedia website there was a new section titled "new golden era under jorge jesus" BEFORE THE SEASON STARTED.......LOL now all the benfica fans act like they support sporting in europe and blah blah blah lol get real not even a year ago when benfica hafd no chance at the champions league and sporting got humiliated by Bayern i remember all of you "pro portugal" benfica fans on this site ripping sporting yet one again benfica wasnt even in the champion but already eliminated from the second rate competition....benfica fans just need to stfu and enjoy the success if it comes with some class
No need to be so negative

I expected more from Benfica but its seems that Marseille are good side too and gave us tough game. Overall its been a good week for French clubs in Europe with Lyon beating Real Madrid, Lille beating Liverpool and Marseille's draw in Estadio da Luz...but may they won't have that luck next time round?
The result at the end is not great but there is no reason why Benfica cannot go to Marseille and Win.

You know what's pathetic is all the Porto fans who come on here to bash on Benfica and whenever they're confronted with Porto performance this season they're only reply has to Champions League in 1962. How big of a loser do you have to be that you can'tcome up with a better comeback. Really, someone says hey what happend to Porto against Sporting, Olhanense, and Arsenal and all you can say is Benfica hasn't won a Champions League since1962, what a loser you are, seriously.

Porto haven't won a game in England,wait for it......EVER!!!

Benfica can out a little apprehensive letting Marseilletake the action to them early, but once they found their legs they controlled the bulk of the play allowing a counter attack here and there. Julio Cesar was a stud as were the starting XI overall. Marseille's goal was a quality goal and if not for some misfortune this game could have gone either way. Both teams had some incredible opportunites.

Forca SL e Benfica!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a good game played by Benfica though they should have got more out of this.
Saviola made some bad choices in passes and he should have been taken off a lot earlier. Kardec & Eder need more game time.

Marseille played well, but Benfica are the better team. I think the first leg at the Luz is to our advantage because we now know how to beat them. I have faith in the squad and Jorge Jesus to advance. The marseille goal was a huge blow, but we can still come out alive. I predict a 1-0 benfica victory in marseille. It will be tough, but something tells me that our defense can hold on.

I hope sporting take care of Atletico as well.

Hey man, we missed you when Porto had to swallow and gag on the five goals from Arsenal, the three against Sporting and the two from Olhanense. Where were you for when that went down?

If Porto had played like Benfica tonight, they still would have been in the Champions League. Go leech somewhere else.

they are in a second-rate champions league and cant even win at home. congrats to sporting. It looks like sporting will have to pull portugal through. For those who question porto all im gonna say is this... you havent won a uefa trophy since 1962!

This will make it an exciting second leg. So far this year they've done well away:
2-0 Shakthar
3-2 Ajax
2-0 Sunderland
2-0 Everton
2-1 BATE Borisov
Even a 1-1 draw like Berlin will give them extra time and penalties. Benfica get the benefit of resting key players this weekend since they have a good lead in the league, whereas Marseille need to win their weekend game to keep their league hopes alive.

No doubt that Ben Afra goal was a killer because it was right at the death. If Benfica had played the first game away and came away with a 2-1 defeat, Benfica fans would be happy. Look at it the same way and have belief that your team will be able to pull it off in the return match.

It isnt Julio Cesar's fault but that last minute goal hurts. Now they must score in the away leg. The confidence level was good. Best of luck.

Thank God for that save Julio Cesar made where he had to bat the ball near the goal line. Other than that the game could of gone either way. Right when I had to go to the washroom Benfica scored and I missed the goal, but when Ramires hit the crossbar I couldn't believe he didn't score. Ben Arfa's header was very hard to stop it was nicely scored I have to admit. I still believe in Benfica advancing to the next round, but now were forced to score in Marseille.
Great game

Benfica fans should be proud. It took a great header to beat Julio Cesar and like the commentary stated, a draw is probably a fair result. This tie is long from being over. There's nothing like a little adversity to create a champion.

Both teams look very good this first half, it's a nail biting game and oh my god I couldn't believe Aimar's chance was a weak shot, so I hope Benfica can score at least two goals to be in the safe zone and concede none. SLB!
