Ex-Benfica player confident ahead of Uefa Cup encounter
“Our aim is to go to Portugal and achieve a good result, which means a draw or a victory,” Carlitos said as he and his team-mates arrived in Lisbon. “After that, on home soil, we’ll hope to seal our passage through to the next round.” With regard to the team’s impressive season thus far, the 25-year-old said: “Collectively we are in good shape. We occupy first place in the Swiss championship, we’re in the semis of the Swiss cup and we’re playing Sporting in the Uefa.” Having been in Swiss football for around 18 months following his summer of 2006 move to Sion where he enjoyed considerable personal success, Carlitos insists that the quality of football played in the country is improving all the time. “Differences between Swiss and Portuguese football? In Portugal the game is quicker, but Swiss football is growing rapidly and is getting nearer and nearer to the level of the Portuguese.” Basel were dealt a blow on Monday when it was revealed that influential midfielder Scott Chipperfield, who has seven goals in 16 league appearances this season, will miss the match with Sporting. He sustained a foot injury during the weekend’s 3-0 win over Neuchâtel Xamax that will keep him out for several weeks.
