Bruno Alves on verge of Zenit move - report

Russians close to sealing deal

FC Porto captain Bruno Alves looks set to finalise his transfer to Russian club Zenit Saint-Petersburg, according to reports in Portugal.

A Bola claims that Zenit are close to an agreement with Porto over a deal worth an estimated €23m for the defender. Although negotiations are not concluded, the Russians appear to have reached a figure satisfactory to the Dragons, despite the offer being below Alves’ €30m release clause.

Alves is believed to have agreed in principle to the transfer, and is expected to leave Porto’s training camp in the next few days to finalise his move to Eastern Europe.

Zenit are currently attempting to secure their place in this season's Champions League group phase, and travel to Romania to take on Unirea Urziceni in the first leg of their third-round qualifier this evening.

Alves to Zenit

First of all, the Russian Premier League is a much stronger league than the Portuguese Liga Sagres (at the moment), and it won't be long before the RPL climbs up to 4th in the UEFA rankings. Hell, I even think that the Russian Premier League is a lot better than the French League already.

Second, Zenit already have Danny Miguel and Fernando Meira at the club, so Bruno will adjust in no time. The RPL also has loads of money.

Last but not least, Zenit is dominating the RPL at the moment. After 15 matches, Zenit have 12 wins and 3 draws (39 points, the only undefeated Russian team at the moment). What club would you rather play on, an RPL dominating Zenit who will be participating in the Champions League this season and are unbeaten in their first 15 matches, or Porto, who finished third last season and is ready to play in the Europa League this season?

If you ask me, I would rather play for Zenit all the way.

BTW I'm a Benfica fan, so I hate Porto. This is a treat to see one of your best players leave.

Cheers,

Well it seems he is gonna sign with Zenit after all.
And while I'm not neutral in this one being Zenit fan, there seems to be some misunderstanding regarding league quality and Zenit quality.
First of all, Russian League is NOT weaker than Portuguese one. It is definitely lacks in price\performance ratio though :)
And although Alves has made his decision because of big salary (Zenit pays top wages even on Russian league scale), you can't ignore the fact that club is ambitious, is on top of Russian Premier League currently halfway through season, has on of Europe's top coaches (Luciano Spaletti) and unlimited amount of cash. And we also have Danny and Meira in squad, so he won't feel lonely and isolated after the move.

And the most important thing - no top club would pay 23 million EURO for him (maybe Man City would, but they don't need another defender :)

Zenit is a better team, Russian premier league (believe it or not) is a stronger league and he'll be making more money. Oh and there are two other players from Portugal there to help him assimilate. And as far as the cold weather goes, the russian season is in the summer making the cold weather argument obsolete. If anything its waaay to hot in StP right now
Bruno Alves to Zenit, not a bad deal after all!

Although i would never try to argue that Zenit is a bigger club than FC Porto in terms of support, stature or prestige. I can understand why Alves and FC Porto would be attracted to this deal.

First of all the money. Its an obvious place to start, Alves can earn 2 or 3 times what he earns at Porto, basically more money than he can ever dream of at Porto.

Football is an extremely short career, I don't blame Alves for taking the money (most people would). What people are forgetting is that FC Porto need the money just as much as Bruno Alves. Porto have a policy of selling off at least "one of their treasures" to a more financially capable opponent. Last year it was Cissoko, Lopez and Lucho Goncalez, this year it looks to be Bruno Alves. I'm sure Porto would rather sell off Bruno Alves (nonetheless a great player) than say a cash-cow like Falcao. We must'nt forget that FC Porto do need the money (perhaps more so than Bruno Alves).

Secondly, although the Russian league is slightly removed from the other european leagues, it certainly does'nt mean it's a weak league. If anything it looks to be getting stronger and more powerful every year, judging by Russian sides performances in the Champions League/Europa League over the past 4 to 5 years.
There is no question that the Russian league is stronger than the Portuguese Supaliga at the moment (and the difference in quality between the two leagues will only grow, as long as millions upon millions are pumped into the Russian game) , so therefore if the league is stronger, the competition will be stronger, thus Bruno Alves will be playing at a higher level.

For those people that suggest, that Bruno Alves should have waited for a "big powerhouse" of Europe, let me just say this. Bruno Alves will be 29 years of age in little more than 3 months time. He has been twice voted "player of the year" in the Portuguese Supaliga, he has starred heavily in 4 Champions League campaigns with Porto (not to mention won 4 Supaliga Campeonato's), and to top all of that he played in every single game involving Portugal at the World Cup, including against Brasil and eventual winners Spain. He can't get much more high profile than that. We can safely say that Bruno Alves has been in the shop window. The so called "big teams" of Europe (for some reason, i cant think why) don't fancy him or at least not that price. The truth is clubs like all businesses are feeling the pinch, only a handful can go out and spend $30million on a central defender.

In short, although not perfect (he will be a sad miss to the Supaliga), i think that this is a good deal for Bruno Alves. Good luck to him.

Thanks for reading :)

Firstly I love our Portuguese Liga just like the rest of my fellow countryman on this site but the bias aside Russia is thats right is a better league than the Portuguese League AT THE MOMENT. When this story first came about few weeks ago there were quite a few people who follow the Russian League and they all made really good points about their league and the owneship especially involved with ZENIT. There indeed are at least 5 if not 6 teams who could win their league whereas realistically in ours its the Big 3, and Braga to an extent. The Maderian sides are formidable and can hold their own like Guimares but they arent winning the championship.

Remember just last year Rubin Kazan beat Barcelona by playing on the counter at the Nou Camp of all places and Inter needed to beat them in order to secure 2nd in last game of champions group play. Every year basically we see a Russian side advance to knockout stages of Champions League, and they play well in Uefa Cup as well. Their 6th right now in standings and with the money pouring into clubs like Zenit to make them better, dont be suprised in couple of years if they can getter better recognizable talent and move up to 4th ahead of germany and france.

C'mon people get your act together.....First he isn't going to Russia anytime soon. Clearly tring to extract max $$$ out of Porto as possible. He's staying. Secondly, David Luiz is not going anywhere either, and Chelsea never made an offer of 32M Euros for him. Foolish reported rumors during times of transfer blues. Both will remain with their respective Portuguese sides.

Didn't he say he wanted a big club move? How is this a big club move? I hope he doesn't regress as a result of this.
Bad move for Porto and Bruno Alves and Portugal

This is a step down for everyone that I stated above. I am surprised let go of who I think was the heart and soul of that team. I mean it's good for us Benfiquistas because now I think porto will be weak in the back four.
I am surprised he wouldn't go to a big team in La Liga, EPL, or Serie A... It must be the $$$ plus a guarenteed spot on the field instead of coming in as a sub if he had gone to a bigger club or league to play.
Hopefully he improves for portugal's sake, we need him!!
What?

Does nobody learn from all of the failed moves to Russia in the past?? Maniche, Costinha, Derlei, etc, etc. It's cold, miserable, not competitive and a nearly impossible language and culture for a Latin person to learn.

Don't sell out Bruno. There's no problem with wanting to try a different more competitive league but Russia is not one of them. If u want the money, just come out and say u want the money and this is the only place offering it to u. I would never hate on someone for trying to secure their own and their family's future.

First let me say that Zenit is a very good club, that will be playing in the Champions League.
With that out of the way, this has to be a money deal for B Alves. What I find particular is Porto not steping up on his contract, so he would stay. You figure that they wouldn't have had to match the offer, maybe just get closer.

I am also surprised that nobody else from the EPL, La Liga or Serie A came calling for him. He had a nice World Cup and has proven his worth in Champions League play.

This will definately hurt Porto, and I don't care how many center-backs they have waiting. Bruno was the leader of that backline, and most likely of the locker room. You would figure that Porto would do everything possible to retain his services after what they experienced last season when letting Lissandro and Lucho leave.
Leaders are not easy to find.

PS Torpiano, the Pav deal is not a dead one, especially if the Spurs go get someone. When City has its fire sale, don't be surprised the Spurs nab Belamy and others. That would make Pav expendable.
Please keep in mind that I think that the Spurs are crazy for letting him go, especially with Champions League play looming. He was a pain last season due to playing time demands.

only 1 reason why he would go to russia.....$$$$$$$.
