FC Porto agree Varela renewal

Winger signs on until 2015

FC Porto have reached an agreement with Silvestre Varela over a two-year contract extension, in recognition of the winger’s progress during his first year at the Dragao.

Varela enjoyed a superb debut campaign with the Dragons last term, having joined on a free transfer from Estrela da Amadora in the summer. The former Sporting man scored eleven goals under Jesualdo Ferreira, a personal best for the player and a rare positive for Porto in what was a poor season for the team as a whole.

The 25-year-old missed the last two months of the season, and subsequently the World Cup, after fracturing his fibula in March, but Varela’s return to fitness and performance in the 2-0 Super Cup win over Benfica at the weekend has led to the Porto hierarchy securing his long-term commitment to the club.

As well as improving his wages, Varela’s new deal has an increased release clause of €40m, making him second only to Hulk (€100m) in terms of the squad’s buyout prices, with most of the star names’ valuations set at €30m.

Varela, who represented Portugal at under-21 level regularly throughout his youth, was given his first senior international cap by Carlos Queiroz in the2-0 friendly victory over China in Coimbra in March.

don't forget about paulo machado he has been doing well in france and he could earn a future call up. I too think danny is best option tho for attacking mid as he normally plays well in that position. He can play as 2nd striker but portugal never tries to play with 2 strikers. Danny is not a winger he best operates out of the middle. Natural replacement for deco
attacking midfielder

I agree that we have 3 good attacking midfielders with different styles.

Danny is the fastest and most skillfull of the group and in my opinion is the best. He was dissapointing in the world cup, but I watch many of his games for zenit and he is a truly talented player. If we use a 4-4-2, he is an excellent second striker.

Moutinho is the hardest worker of the group and he is more of a box-to-box midfielder than a traditional #10. He may not have the spectacular vision and beautiful passes of rui costa or even deco, but he does get the job done and he is also a great leader.

Ruben Micael is the closest to rui costa and deco's style. He is probably the least experienced of the 3, but he is very gifted. He is the best passer of the group and he also is a good goal scorer.

Varela will be a world class winger one day and will hopefully be our 3rd winger behind nani.

I LIKED wat Justin from rochester wrote!I'm glad to hear that still some are interested in the selecao after the world cup since all of you guys turned their eyes fully to LA LIGA BIG 3 forgetting that our selecao needs something to benefit from these players who will never be repeated in our whole life like Coentrao,Eduardo,Micael and others!!we just need a tactic or a new coach to know how to deal with this pool of wingers and attackers, and how to benefit from our highly qualified wingers such as Nani,Varela,Quaresma,Ronaldo,Djalo and others and to mix them with our talented strikers or finishers like Ukra,Almeida,Orlando Sa,Makukula,Vaz Te and hopefully Joao Silva who's supposed to shine in England!
I just want to see Portugal shining again!we have more than 50 players that can achieve a tournament!
what's the problem?Is it FPF?juSt convince me!!...

The seleçao has three potential replacements for Deco. We're not missing a CAM, we just need to see which one will step up and make the position theirs. It will be interesting to see whether it will be Danny, Micael or Moutinho to take the spot of Deco.

To me, it would be great to see either Micael and Meireles in the team together or even Micael and Moutinho depending on who works best together at Porto
What about Danny?

He is a better midfielder than Queiroz's positioning as a winger.
We need this guy

The seleccao needs this guy to step up. He is one of those bright spots for us on a rather dull attacking team. With players like him, nani, ronaldo and hopefully quaresma, if they can start to gel and mix in a joao silva who can get better in england and maybe orlando sa this team could really start playing well. Still missing an attacking center mid though.
