FC Porto agree Varela renewalWinger signs on until 2015 FC Porto have reached an agreement with Silvestre Varela over a two-year contract extension, in recognition of the winger’s progress during his first year at the Dragao.
Varela enjoyed a superb debut campaign with the Dragons last term, having joined on a free transfer from Estrela da Amadora in the summer. The former Sporting man scored eleven goals under Jesualdo Ferreira, a personal best for the player and a rare positive for Porto in what was a poor season for the team as a whole. The 25-year-old missed the last two months of the season, and subsequently the World Cup, after fracturing his fibula in March, but Varela’s return to fitness and performance in the 2-0 Super Cup win over Benfica at the weekend has led to the Porto hierarchy securing his long-term commitment to the club. As well as improving his wages, Varela’s new deal has an increased release clause of €40m, making him second only to Hulk (€100m) in terms of the squad’s buyout prices, with most of the star names’ valuations set at €30m. Varela, who represented Portugal at under-21 level regularly throughout his youth, was given his first senior international cap by Carlos Queiroz in the2-0 friendly victory over China in Coimbra in March. Danny is the fastest and most skillfull of the group and in my opinion is the best. He was dissapointing in the world cup, but I watch many of his games for zenit and he is a truly talented player. If we use a 4-4-2, he is an excellent second striker.
Moutinho is the hardest worker of the group and he is more of a box-to-box midfielder than a traditional #10. He may not have the spectacular vision and beautiful passes of rui costa or even deco, but he does get the job done and he is also a great leader.
Ruben Micael is the closest to rui costa and deco's style. He is probably the least experienced of the 3, but he is very gifted. He is the best passer of the group and he also is a good goal scorer.
Varela will be a world class winger one day and will hopefully be our 3rd winger behind nani.
I just want to see Portugal shining again!we have more than 50 players that can achieve a tournament!
what's the problem?Is it FPF?juSt convince me!!...
To me, it would be great to see either Micael and Meireles in the team together or even Micael and Moutinho depending on who works best together at Porto
