Meireles to join Liverpool - report

Midfielder to replace Javier Mascherano

raulmeirelesjorgesousa.jpgRenascena has reported that FC Porto midfielder Raul Meirieles is close to sealing a move to Premier League side Liverpool.

The Portuguese international has been under massive speculation all summer being linked to several of Europe's elite clubs including Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The 27-year-old has yet to feature in an official match for the Dragoes, leading to constant suggestions that the player was due to leave the Portuguese club.

Renascenca has gone further and added that representatives from Porto have flown to England to finalise the deal which would see Meireles ply his trade at Anfield.

It is suspected that the former Boastiva player is seen as a direct replacement for Argentine Javier Mascherano, who is to join Barcelona.

This is the time to sell Meireles, cash right away Porto doesn't need him anymore. He has achieved everything in Portugal it would be great for him to play in the toughest league in the world.
good luck raul!!

I'm shocked Porto only got 13 million, but it's obvious that there has been a market correction on the transfer wire this season... everyone has been sold for less than people previously thought they were worth...

better to get what they got for him than have him stay and be pissed off... i'm just happy he went to a big club and a big leauge... poor bruno alves had to go to friggin siberia!

enjoy watching him all you scousers... i think it's a good fit
good luck

If this deal comes off then good luck to him, he deserves to play in a stronger league and I've been waiting too long for a quality Portuguese player to join Liverpool!

I dont think liverpool is in need for a midfielder, they have already bought poulsen as masch replacement. Liverpool has other priorities like LB and striker.
Stupid?

I dont think its a stupid sale. Meireles won 4 championship titles last 5 years, 2 Portuguese Cups and 3 Portuguese SuperCups. Its time to let him get the recognition he deserves by going to a better league. Also, Porto got Moutinho from Sporting, so his spot on team is already taken. If Porto waited more, he could end up with Meireles unhappy and having to sell for less. If you thinking Porto selling cheap, your mistaken, Ill wait to see, last 5 players Porto sold had contract clauses where, only in last year, they got 4M€ more from Cissokho, Lucho, Quaresma and Lisandro. Sometimes, selling cheap can give more profit then getting 3 or 4M more :)

Forget Real Madrid, he will achieve great things playing alongside Steven Gerrard. He demands competitive football, and Liverpool are as competitive as they come. Wish him all the best...

I think it all depends on the money... Porto always tries to cash out on players when they hit 27-28 years old. Do they really need him for the Europa league this year? No. Do they need him for the league? Doesn't seem like it so far. Next year he'll be a year older and who knows if there will still be this much interest. Porto can use this season to develop new midfielders, give them Europa league experience and prepare for champions league next year

Looks like Porto jumped the gun in buying his replacement and thought Meirieles would be sold at a higher price. Its almost the end of the transfer window and there have been no offers. Now they are going to other countries/clubs to try to sell him, isn't usually the other way around where clubs come to you to buy a player lol. My understanding is that Liverpool is going to pocket some of that cash. O well Sporting got a nice cash grab from Porto and Porto maybe forced to sell him dirt cheap.
