In-form Belluschi set for FC Porto renewal

Extension agreed

FC Porto are set to reward Fernando Belluschi for his impressive form so far this season by handing the Argentine midfielder an improved contract.

Belluschi, who moved to the Dragao last summer in a €5m deal from Olympiacos, showed glimpses of his talent during his first season in Portugal, but Ruben Micael’s arrival in January meant the former River Plate man was a less prominent figure under Jesualdo Ferreira in the second half of the campaign.

However, under new coach Andre Villas Boas, Belluschi has enjoyed an excellent start to the season. Now, according to agent Alberto Meo, terms are almost agreed on a one-year extension to his current deal, which runs until 2013. The option to improve the contract was implemented when the 26-year-old arrived in Porto.

“It’s all agreed and I think it is more than deserved for Fernando, who was not recognised as much as he should have been in his first season, but the development does not surprise me,” said Meo. “He can be one of the most important figures at FC Porto.”

For Micael, meanwhile, patience is required. With Villas Boas already set on two parts of his first-choice midfield trio in Fernando and Joao Moutinho, currently Belluschi occupies the third, more advanced, role in the system. “Ruben knows that a winning team does not change, why would it? He knows everything is working and is waiting for an opportunity,” a source close to the player told Maisfutebol.

It's good to have quality players fighting for the same position.

Belluschi has been superb so far but I remain doubtful that he can keep it up for the whole season so I think Ruben will get his chance to prove himself not before too long.

Hopefully Ruben Micael doesn't warm the bench this year.
