European Super-Cup: Porto undone by Barcelona

FC Porto 0-2 Barcelona

hulk-disappointment-super-cup.jpgA goal late in each half by Messi and Fabregas gave Barcelona a 2-0 victory over FC Porto in the European Super Cup final played in Monaco last night. The Dragons gave a good account of themselves for most of the match and can point to what looked like an obvious penalty denied them when they were just one goal down. Late indiscipline resulted in red cards for Rolando and Guarin.

Vitor Pereira pulled a surprise in Porto’s starting line-up, picking Cristian Rodriguez despite the fact he has featured little in pre-season or in the new campaign thus far as rumours continue to surround the Uruguayan linking him to a transfer out of the Estadio do Dragao.

The selection appeared a correct one as strong running from Rodriguez on the left and Hulk on the other flank stretched Barcelona on numerous occasions. Shots from Moutinho and Hulk caused danger early on, with Valdes saving the former and the latter flashing just wide. In between Pedro missed a good chance as he chipped over Helton and the bar when clean through.

Disaster struck for Porto on 39 minutes as Guarin’s careless back pass went straight to Messi, who had little trouble in rounding Helton and slotting into the net.

Valdes save

After the break Moutinho fired a shot narrowly wide before Guarin almost redeemed himself with a tremendous strike from distance that had Valdes diving at full stretch to tip the ball around the post. The impressive Helton then did well to deny Villa.

There was a controversial moment on 80 minutes when Guarin took advantage of an Abidal lapse in the box to steal the ball off the French defender, who proceeded to bring down the Colombian. It looked a clear penalty but the referee waved away the furious Porto protests.

Shortly afterwards Rolando was sent off for a second yellow card after bringing down Messi in full flight. The little Argentine then provided a superb dinked cross for Fabregas to finish stylishly and put the game to bed. Guarin let his frustration get the better of him with an ugly lunge on Mascherano that resulted in Porto’s second sending off, and as Barcelona ended the game at a canter Helton saved superbly to deny Iniesta.

Another goal would have been harsh on Porto. The Dragons competed well against undisputedly the best side in the world, although the match served to highlight that the loss of Falcao significantly weakens the Portuguese champions, with Kleber making little impact.

Barcelona:
Valdes, Alves, Mascherano, Abidal, Adriano (Busquets 63), Xavi, Keita, Iniesta, Pedro (Fabregas 80), Messi, Villa (Sanchez 61)

Porto:
Helton, Fucile, Otamendi, Rolando, Sapunaru, Guarin, Souza (Fernando 77), Moutinho, Cristian Rodriguez (Varela 69), Kleber (Belluschi 77), Hulk

Goals:
[0-1] Messi, 39
[0-2] Fabregas, 88

Hulk is a striker

Do you think Hulk would be better as a striker,I think if and when an English team buys him he will become a very good striker,I would rather him up front than Kleber.
Good Showing

I finally got to see the match, and I thought that Porto gave a good account of itself.
Kleber didn;t show as well, but he just started playing with these guys. He will settle in, it's just how long will it take.

I love the quote:
QUOTE OF THE DAY

"It's complicated to award a penalty against Barcelona."
Vitor Pereira(FC Porto coach)

I only wish that other than Portuguese managers would make that statement.
I get "Big" teams getting calls, and at this time there's no bigger than Barca.

Like I said, I thought Porto showed well, and if not a few "glitches", the result could have been different.

Porto will be very tough in league play and should follow through to the CL.

Thats cool i must have not posted it accidentally.

To those of you saying its only Benfica supporters who are saying Kleber was rubbish its not, Kleber was bad other than a few nice touches at the start he bombed a good chance at goal before half time, Sousa also needs to be on the bench he did rather well defensively but in attack was poor Porto need to use Fernando or Guarin as a box to box and have Moutinho and Beluschi starting. Thats another reason why Micael should have stayed.

In honesty though it was not worth waking up at 4 in the mourning to watch Barca on the ground more than running the simple fact is they cheat and in close games refs give them the advantage its not even open for dispute its a fact, their supporters might say its not true but they know it is.

I am no longer waking up to watch a Barcelona game because i just go to bed annoyed at their playing style and cheating ways. Barcelona were very lucky to win it should have been 1-1 and into extra time from there on who knows who would win, good job Porto you proved you are one of the best teams in the world.
Only saw the first half..

I was out of town for a wedding and missed the second half but of what I saw Porto played exceptional.. bar the Hulk attempted dive for a free kick.

Helton played better than I have ever saw him.. might have to warm up to him.

I expected the D to get run more ragged but the Porto back-line held up well in the face of the best team in the world.

Clearly every football fan would love to see Champs at their best.. and I think a format change is in order.

1 to 2 weeks after the CL final is when the Super Cup should be played.. while the teams are at their best, and still in full shape bar a few scratches. Save the World Club Champs tourney for this time of year.

But as usual it is an attempt by UEFA to keep the smaller teams down and maintain their hierarchy. Same with the absurd nature of the League rankings.. Portugal has to wait two seasons to get their extra draws.. in the CL.. and EL... why???? all that is drawn after the fact. Their is no excuse to wait 2 years it should commense the next season what are they still using the pony express to do the automated calculations?

This practice is mainly to keep the lower leagues down, because any displays like Porto's last year and to a milder extent Benfica.. and equivalent other squads throughout Europe will lead to the head hunting of the talent that got them there. The ability for these smaller leagues to maintain that talent for 2 years is virtually impossible.. so by the time some get to the CL their team is decimated.. same to a smaller extent in the EL too. porting should be in the CL this season and the other extra Liga teams in the EL. This would help in gaining more points also to rise even further.

Falcao yesterday would've hurt Barca for sure.. without doubt but he is playing for AM now.

I think Pereira did a fabulous job because his tactics limited the best team on the planet.

The neutrals are starting to see more and more that Barca don't win so cleanly.. and that maybe Mourinho has a point. For such a skilled team they have an ability to resort to some negative tactics to win at times.. and for me it hurts their game and their lustre. This is a great TEAM who has been together for awhile.. that unto itself is an advantage over others.. especially teams like the Portuguese that have to sell.. to maintain their places in Europe.

As for the Ref he clearly was biased but I don't think it was done on purpose.. it is a Cognitive Bias that he shares with UEFA and the majority of the world.. it is that Barca is better.. and far superior so when you put on those glasses and watch a game it looks much different especially on the close plays.

All of us of course saw it differently and feel robbed.

That's why it is so hard for one of the non-super-elite to win when playing in a biased game against a perceived far superior team. The benefit will always go to the big one.

Someone pointed out that Barca wasn't playing their full squad but the same is true for Porto.. I would've rather saw Varela on the left.. Fernando, and another few moves including Walter starting.. I can understand that their is some background reasons for all the moves.. and is why unlike JJ.. Pereira has excuses for why he didn't start some, so I don't blame him. Never mind what would've happened with Falcao there a guy that could terrorize the weak backline of Barca.

All-in-all Porto fans should be proud.. and the squad deserves a lot of praise.. once again demonstrating a strong Liga performance in Europe.

Congratulations!!

you guys need to give kleber a break. he was up front alone against barcelona. he did what he could and did you see any one giving the ball that much? did you see either rodrigues or hulk giving a good support on the wings for him? no so stop hammering kleber because in time he will show his class and he had a good game in my opinion and for these benfiquistas coming on here and making critics of kleber. would cardoso do any better?
good stuff

Though I would've absolutely loved to see Porto pull out the win, there is no reason to be too upset about the result. If a few decisions would've gone the other way, it could very easily have ended differently. I think Porto played really well, especially since they were at the Camp Nou. They do miss Falcao though. Kleber did struggle but I think it was always going to be too much to expect him to immediately fill Falcao's shoes.

Porto fans shouldn't be too worried and I think Barcelona are showing signs that they aren't going to dominate their opponents as much this season as they have in the past. I'm really hoping they come undone at some point and get destroyed by Madrid. I think everyone who believes that the hope and future of world football is not tied directly to Barcelona wants that.

There are defeats that define a team; this is for me one of them. I’m proud of my team.

I accept this defeat with ease. Porto gave good replica against the actual best team in the world. The ball movement is very strong for the Catalans and that goal out of nowhere was unfair for Porto. Whether or not there was a penalty, I don’t even want to approach the game by this. I’m sure it will give us the possibility of a tie that eventually would lead us to an extension, but the overall Barca has always been more prevalent in the game naturally.

I only regret Porto has not entered the field at full strength, it was the 2010/2011 Porto I liked to have seen play against Barcelona. This was the dream that Villas Boas stole to us, this is my only regret. I wanted to see the Porto of Villas Boas, Hulk and Falcao playing against Barca. Could not ... unfortunately we are a team "in transit", yet undefined, without reference to the attack and some players who can still go up to 4 days from now.

Kleber was an “angel”, is not ready but I have no doubt he’ll be a terrific striker in future although different from Falcao. Hulk sighed by reference in the box, Varela out of shape, Alvaro Pereira was not even drafted, as well as the "joker" James Rodriguez, to my regret. Through all these factors, it became almost impossible to make Porto more than they did yesterday. And they did well. Porto made a nice display, Vitor Pereira was very smart tactically, and I venture to say it was more effective than Mourinho or Ferguson approach against Barça with a team with fewer resources. Pereira understood perfectly Barça, placing a very coordinate and line defense very up near the midfield line. This entails congestion in the midfield, forcing Xavi and Iniesta retreating to receive the ball and a lot of offside traps. Cristian Rodriguez role was important because he can play as left midfielder defending to help and not allow that Dani Alves goes to the other box cross or forcing the opposing defense to open spaces, although had not endured more than 60 minutes. Varela is out of shape. Souza is debatable, but I prefer Fernando in good shape.

It was unlucky the way we suffered the first goal... not all teams puts Barça nervous the way we did. Very unlucky because this decided the way the game end and very unlucky for the good work of the defense.
I found myself sometimes asking to elevate the tempo, but it’s ironically dangerous against Barcelona, just look to Real Madrid games against them. Although sometimes I liked to have seen more nerve to our players.

This time out the bean to Guarin, when he had gone out to Helton, Bruno Alves, Aloisio, Lucho Gonzalez on other occasions. Laments, is a shame, but part of the game. Guarin gave us many wins in the past and I’m sure he’ll give much more in the future!

Strengthening my feeling: I just wanted to see the Porto of 3 months ago to play this Barcelona... this is my only regret. But I’m confident we are making another very good team. Iturbe, Defour, James Rodriguez, Kleber, Mangala…

Congratulations for Barça and thank for the real respect that their staff and players gave to Porto before and after the game.

Last but not least, for our rivals, Barça out of shape? Sorry if they disappointed to crush us as some expected, but we proved again, in another European final, that we are the best portuguese team, no room for doubt. I’m proud of the smartest way we fight eye to eye against Barça and make them run for the trophy and cheer the loser as I do not regularly see in football.

Bjorn Kuipers, you remember this name? Supposedly had been the referee who dined with Pinto da Costa after the Porto 5 – 1 Villarreal on semi final of EL, the sirens of corruption returned to play against the Porto in an attempt to try to destabilize or take Porto out of the EL final. And this is where we come to a classic case of fame to no avail. Mr Kuipers yesterday handed over the receipt of the alleged dinner. We paid it. 5 officials, none saw the obvious. Thank you Mr Platini!

They didn't have many chances because Barca controls the possession of the game as usual but Porto was well organized defensively. As for the "penalty scream" Abidal's feet or legs don't connect with Guarin and it looks like Guarin just runs into him looking for a call. The sent offs looked soft but it was obvious they were frustrated as well. Portista's should be proud they were to keep a close game to Barcelona.

Proud of porto's performance throughout the match, deserved a goal. One thing is apparent, even in a "friendly" barca are heavily favoured by referees. So much for the ref behind the goal line, who a few yards from the blatant penalty fails to speak up(not that the ref or linesman didn't see it either). Guarins straight red is ridiculous(talk about porto players play acting, barca have shown to be the experts these past 2 years). Rolando's second yellow also very soft, as what causes messi's fall is his right foot giving way as he changes direction(watch replays)...does rolando even touch him? Porto missed alvaro on the left flank and was expecting sapunaru to be a little more active down the right. Kleber looked nervous but im sure he'll grow in confidence in these bigger games as there were moments he showed he does have a good touch. Every other player gave o more than decent account of themselves.
We are in trouble with pereira

My family are die hard Portistas, but after watching this game I really feel we are in trouble this year. I don't think Vitor Pereira has what it takes tactically to make this team into a true force for the Champions League and will struggle to win the league. Barcelona was playing with a very make shift and SMALL defense. Despite having, I believe, 7 corners and 4-5 free kicks we could not produce even a half chance from these set plays. I understand we were playing the best team in the world, but the chances were there to be had. However our set plays looked pathetic! Rolando was by far the tallest/biggest man on the pitch and we couldn't even come close to picking him out on a corner. Any good coach would have realized you must CAPITALIZE on those opportunities against a side like Barca. Pereira's lack for tactics will cost us dearly this year and realistically it is our last year before we firesale the bulk of this magnificent team. Losing Villas Boas will prove to be too much to handle for this team.

1- kleber is absolute trash. porto needs to find a better option at striker.

2- the rest of the team played great. even with some of the usual starters on the bench for some reason porto went in there and put the pressure on barcelona like no other team i've seen. i've never seen barca kicks so many balls out of bounds in a panic.

3- who knows what would've happened if it wasn't for that mistake by guarin. they basically gave up a freeby goal. these things happen unfortunately. besides that blunder guarin played great, he's really turning into a dominant midfield presence. he will go for some big money in the next few years.

4- no penalty on keita... a bad ref call that would've most likely evened things up and changed the pace of the game once again

5- i'm excited for the champions league after seeing how well they played against barca with this line up. if they can find a decent striker by the knockout stages porto will be a threat to any team they play.

I don't know why everyone is coming down on Kleber. It's quite obvious that he's not going to replicate Falcao's goal scoring exploits straight away given that he's 4 years his junior, and he's only played 3 official matches for Porto. He's simply one for the future. However, I do agree that Walter should get more playing time given he already understands Porto's system and is a proven goal scorer.

Porto's display, apart from the chaotic final minutes, was actually very encouraging. This contest didn't have very much in it. Porto really kept Barca in check with that high defensive line and offside trap. This game could have easily been 1-0 for Porto 75 minutes in, given we had a legitimate penalty claim, and Barca's first goal was an absolute gift from a horrible back pass courtesy of Guarin. Porto actually looks very good going into the Champions League, and I can't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to make to the quarter finals at the least.
How Ironic...

Porto cry about a penalty after 80-plus minutes of cheap shots. Yeah Guarin got brought down, but that just evened things out. How about Otamendi and Fucile? Both fouled multiple times for no reason-Was I the only one who saw Fucile take that face slap at Messi early in the game? And Rolando, the heart and soul of the defense, with two ugly, lazy challenges. He can play much better than that.
If I were a Portista, I would be more upset about Guarin's straght red for that challenge, as IMO that was overly harsh... Also, Hulk again shows his selfishness by taking an impossible shot with Kleber wide open and unmarked deep in the box, a waste of a crucial opportunity.
In closing, shame on Vitor Perreira for once again showing a lack of class and sportsmanship by bitterly complaining and lamenting the missed penalty. This guy needs to shut up and coach. He already has an impossible standard to live up to, as AVB raised the bar that much higher, but even taking that into consideration and cutting him some slack, he is really coming off as an epic whiner. Man up and zip it- you are as bad as JJ was last year... (and thats coming from a Benfiquista!!)

....was Porto's best and most consistent player the whole match... forced a few saves from Valdes and was prob FCP's biggest threat offensively...

on the flip side of that, C-Rod was awful.... just awful!

all in all FCP played about as well as you could've hope for... I've seen much much better teams get embarrassed by Barca...

Well i must say for once, a penalty is denied to Porto...that doesn't ever happen in the Portuguese league does it? But seriously Barca are just so far ahead of everyone else, it's unreal. Even last night they were far from their best and still looked in pre-season mode, but were still too good for Porto.
It's so hard to see anyone stopping Barca again this season

Porto should take heart though, they gave a good account of themselves and could go quite far in the champs league. But they will definitely miss Falcao, no doubt about it. Kleber looks decent and hard-working, but doesn't appear to have that real threat in the box that Falcao had. It also remains to be seen who else Porto might lose...apparently Chelsea might not be buying Modric after all and could therefore go for Moutinho instead. That would be a big loss to Porto. But Barca were yet again a joy to behold, and good luck to anyone trying to stop them. It's possible of course, this is football, but it will take a monumental effort!!

Porto played very well against Barcelona so they should be proud. The defense looked extremely well organized, but the fullbacks could have done more to help the forwards. I was shocked to see Souza get the start as the holding midfielder considering how well Fernando does against quality teams. Souza at first, actually played quite well, but as the game progressed, you could tell that he was very tired. Joao Moutinho worked extremely hard off the ball and tried to create when he had it, but the front 3 were usually wasteful in possession.

Guarin did make a terrible mistake when he gifted Messi with a goal, but besides that error, he played pretty well. Hulk was pretty good in the first half, but when the fatigue started to kick in throughout the seconds half, Hulk saw less and less of the ball. Rodriguez didn't do much and Kleber was extremely disappointing. I know that Kleber is good in the air, but he doesn't really offer anything else. He was extremely slow and he didn't link up well with the final third. Walter, in my opinion offers so much more than Kleber so I think that he should start.

And finally, if Porto did get the penalty, the match probably would have gone into extra time, but I really couldn't see Porto creating any quality chances. It is the beginning of the season so the players weren't at the peak of their fitness. By 70 minutes most of the Porto players looked very tired so I couldn't see them lasting another 30 minutes of extra time against the best team in the world.

I though Kleber was really good. On the ball he can do alot more than Falcao but he needs a bit more practice with his heading. Seeing as hes only 21.

Also Porto should off had the penalty which would have been a different game, I realise Bacerlona are the best team in the world yet alot of desisions go their way and they throw themselfs like mad about on the floor.

Just wonder are they the best.

I think Porto acquitted themselves well and were unlucky not to be level with the penalty claim. I also thought the second sending off was soft to say the least. Barcelona, for being the best team in the world do tend to throw themselves about like they've been shot!
I had been intrigued to see how Kleber would shape up, but how can you replace Falcao? I would have preferred Fernando to start over Souza myself also.
