PortuGOAL exclusiveHelton: “It was a great victory but nothing is decided yet”

Exclusive reaction from Porto players to victory at the Luz

Helton victory saluteFC Porto’s players tempered their obvious delight at winning in Benfica’s Estadio da Luz (for the third consecutive time), with the realisation that the championship is still far from won. Speaking to PortuGOAL immediately after the match, Marc Janko, Helton and Defour conceded the Dragons had obtained a very important victory, but insisted nothing was decided yet.

Austrian striker Marc Janko had his first taste of the most eagerly awaited fixture in the Portuguese football calendar and was suitably taken aback. “Tonight was one of the top atmospheres I have ever played in,” said the beanpole marksman.

“The whole team is working really good at the moment. We are really focused and I think we deserve to be on top. If you look at the whole game we were the better team. We are in a good situation and we are looking forward to the next games,” added Janko.

Goalkeeper Helton had another solid game for the Portuguese champions, and admitted “it was another big step we managed to take towards our objective, which is to retain our title.”

But when pressed as to whether Porto are now favourites to lift the Liga ZON Sagres crown, Helton was quick to dismiss the idea. “No. Things aren’t like that. It was a very important game, we took a big step, but nothing is defined yet. There are still a lot of games until we reach the end. Without any doubt it was a great victory and we took a good step forward, but nothing is defined yet,” said the Brazilian stopper.

Unused substitute Defour was equally delighted with the outcome of a thrilling match, but like Helton was prudent when asked if Porto were now favourites.

“We won an important game today but there are still nine games to go and it will be difficult. But we’re three points ahead and the games against each other are very important as well so it’s good for us,” said the Belgian midfielder.

Defour has found it hard to crack a first-team spot in his debut season at Porto, but says he is happy at the club and feels next season will be a big year for him. “I like it very much (in Portugal). I’ve had some adaption time. I play sometimes; sometimes I don’t. It’s progress for me. I think next season will be a very important year for me,” Defour told PortuGOAL.
