Guarín makes Inter move permanentColombian nets Dragões €11,000,000 FC Porto have this afternoon confirmed that the Colombian midfielder Fredy Guarín has made his move to Internazionale permanent, in a deal which will net the Dragões €11,000,000. In a statement released to the Portuguese Securities Markets Commission (CMVM), Porto confirmed the deal, which is subject to Guarín agreeing terms with Inter.
Guarín joined Porto from St. Étienne in 2008 for an undisclosed fee, after coming through the ranks at Boca Juniors. The majority of his first two seasons at the Dragão saw him feature as an impact substitute, with his progress impeded by injuries. However, in 2010/11 Guarín finally came into his own under André Villas-Boas, performing a vital role in Porto's treble-winning campaign. As well as contributing ten goals from midfield, the 25 year-old became a fan favourite for his extravagent celebrations - and an unforgettable taste in headgear. Everything looked set up for a strong 2011/12 under Vítor Pereira, but Guarín made just three starts before falling behind João Moutinho, Steven Defour and Fernando Belluschi in the pecking order. An injury sustained whilst on duty with Colombia in November brought his 2011 to a premature close, and last January he was shipped out on loan to Inter, for an initial fee of €1,500,000 with an option to purchase for €13,500,000. Despite making just six starts at the San Siro, the Nerazzurri have apparently seen enough from Guarín to commit to a fee approaching Porto's initial asking price, leaving the current Liga champions €12,500,000 up before the summer transfer season begins in earnest. Questionable transfer by Inter, in my opinion.
Curious to see how many more go. Futile, Pereira! Rolando, Moutinho and/or Hulk. PdC will have his job cut out for him this off-season.
