Season over for Mariano

Knee ligament rupture crocks FC Porto player

Mariano GonzalezFC Porto’s attacking midfielder Mariano Gonzalez will play no more this season after rupturing his cruciate ligament in his right knee against Academica on Saturday.

The news is a big blow for the Argentine, who has put in a string of impressive performances this year. Although not a guaranteed starter, Mariano had finally won over the Porto fans, especially after scoring spectacular goals to help defeat Academica and Sporting in the cup competitions.

The 28-year-old’s absence could pose problems for Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira in their end-of-season run-in, with the team still involved in three competitions.

Mariano was a regular option in Porto’s front line in their usual 4-3-3 formation, but with Hulk still suspended and Ernesto Farias and Orlando Sa also out injured, the Dragons are left with only Rodriguez, Varela and Falcao as their front players with no natural substitutes.

Mariano has been one of my favorite players for Porto. This is very unfortunate.
