Gil Vicente join Feirense in Liga ZON SagresGilistas beat Fatima to return to top flight Celebrations went on long into night in the northern Portuguese town of Barcelos yesterday after Gil Vicente won their final match of the season to earn promotion back into the top flight after a five-year absence.
Goals from Luis Carlos, Joao Vilela and Hugo Vieira gave Paulo Alves’ team a 3-1 victory over Fatima in front of a capacity crowd of 12,550 at the Cidade de Barcelos stadium.
The celebrations were heightened by the fact the victory enabled Gil to leapfrog Feirense and claim the Liga Orangina title, given that Feirense played out a goalless draw at home to Leixoes. Although denied the title, Feirense will also be celebrating a memorable season that will see them in the upper echelon of Portuguese football for the first time in 21 years in 2011/12.
Court case“Half of justice has been done today, but the other half is still to be done and will be decided by the courts. But now is the moment to celebrate for the whole gilista family,” said club president Antonio Fiuza.
Toast of the party was the coach, former Portugal striker Paulo Alves, who Fiuza confirmed will be the man in the dugout next season. “We suffered a lot of setbacks, but in the end it’s fair to say that we were the best team,” said Alves.
While Gil Vicente and Feirense end the season in triumph, it was a sad day for Varzim and Fatima, both of whom drop out of the Liga Orangina into the regional leagues.

Celebrations went on long into night in the northern Portuguese town of Barcelos yesterday after Gil Vicente won their final match of the season to earn promotion back into the top flight after a five-year absence.
All in all not bad news, due to the scope and reach of Benfica. We'll just adjust strategy.
In any case, I am sad to see the Varzim go down due to their fans support. Sad.
Gil Vicent will be a nice addition, and should have the necessary support in the SuperLiga. Great fans.
