Tiago Targino – from despair to elation in ten monthsWinger makes spectacular comeback after injury nightmare Vitoria Guimaraes beat Sporting at the Alvalade last night for the first time in 14 years. To do so Manuel Machado’s team produced a sensational late comeback, turning a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 win, thanks largely to one man – Tiago Targino.
It was a personal triumph for the winger whose stuttering career suffered a big setback just as it appeared to be taking off at the start of this calendar year owing to a serious injury.
After showing much promise in his early years, Targino’s career had failed to take off. Two unsuccessful stints in Turkey and Denmark had failed to ignite the undoubted talent of the pacey wide man.
Cruel ironyThat all seemed to be changing last season as a string of excellent performances in the first half of 2009/10 led to frenzied speculation that the Beja born forward was set for a move to Benfica. In a cruel irony, it was precisely against Benfica, on 30 January 2010, that Targino ruptured his cruciate ligaments in his left knee to bring his season to a premature end and scupper the move.
A long fight for fitness ensued. Before yesterday, Targino had played just 21 minutes of football, in the League Cup tie against Malveira on 17 October.
Judging by his impact against Sporting, the 24-year-old is ready to pick up where he left off last season. Coming off the bench, two quick-fire goals in two minutes got Vitoria right back into the match. The late winner from Teles pushes the northerners up to second place in the table.
For Targino, the dream of making a big name for himself in the game is still very much alive.

Tearing cruciate ligaments is the taboo word you don't want to hear as any athlete. Its good to hear that he's making a strong comeback and that he will help Vitoria SC help challenge the three-fold monopoly that is Sporting/Porto/Benfica.

Hopefully Targino experiences a Varela-style renaissance. Judging from those goals and what people are saying about him, he definitely possesses the talent to do so. I only wish Portugal's young centre forwards were making such headlines.
