Sergio appeals for focus

Guimaraes coach doesn't want repeat of Rio Ave defeat

paulosergio2.jpgHaving just come off a defeat against Rio Ave in the Carlsberg Cup, Vitoria Guimaraes' Paulo Sergio  is demanding that his players don't have the same lapse in concentration they did during that loss.

The vimarense will travel to Maderia to face Maritimo in one of the more intriguing contests of the weekend and Sergio knows that any mental slip-ups will cost his side a win against a difficult opponent.

"The objective is to earn a victory and to do this the team cannot repeat the mistakes they made in first match this year against Rio Ave. We have to be consistent and focused right from the beginning to the end of the match," said Sergio.

Asked whether the holiday stoppage hampered his side and contributed to the loss in the league cup, Sergio was adamant that it did take its toll on his squad and hopes that the schedule will change in the future.

"The stoppage hurts the teams and clubs. Firstly, the spirit if Christmas creates some form of lack of concentration amongst the players and, afterwards, because some players spend their holidays in their native countries, they rarely return to training they way they should."
