We won't lose our table position - Nilson

Goalkeeper steadfast on earning Europa League spot

nilson_vitoria_guimaraes.jpgWith about as many matches as you can count on one hand left in the season, Vitoria Guimaraes would love to have an added objective next term as the team want to participate in the Europa League.

The minhoto side are currently in fifth place and are holding onto dear life for the last European spot. The vimarense can still reach fourth place, as they are only four points back of Sporting, but going the other way in the standings is just not an option.

"There are various teams (left fighting for the spot). The difference between fifth and eighth place is little. If it weren't for the referee's mistakes in the last game (against Olhanense), we could be five points from sixth place and that would have given us some room for the rest of the championship," said the veteran netminder on the club's official web site.

"I consider Leiria, Pacos and Nacional, who have returned to victories, will all fight for this spot. But we will not loosen our grip as the spot is ours. We will not lose this spot. We had a difficult start to the season, but with time we managed to overcome all of these adversaries and today we are in fifth place."

In order to do this, Nilson went further and added that he's hoping for some inspiration as he and the rest of the team are counting on the support from the Guimaraes faithful.

"I believe if we win our three remaining matches at home, we wil achieve our objective, which is to be in the Europa League, and our supprters are aware of this. They know the influence that they had had with the team's results."

"For us, the players, it acts as a motivating factor to see our stadium with little space unoccupied, that still need to be filled, and we always like to see the stadium well inhabited. They are a human frame that makes us proud and they always demonstrate the greatness that is Vitoria. We will need them during this final sprint."

Guimaraes needs a win or a draw against Porto to keep their Europa League chance alive unless Leiria, P.Ferreira and Nacional drop points.
