Vitoria Guimaraes appoint Manuel Machado

Nacional’s manager to return home

Manuel MachadoDone and dusted. Manuel Machado will be the new coach of Vitoria de Guimaraes for 2010/2011, although the official announcement is only to be made at the end of the season.

Guimaraes have been pursuing a new manager ever since current incumbent Paulo Sergio was confirmed as Sporting’s head coach next season. As reported earlier, Manuel Machado and Paulo Bento were among the front runners and the northern club have opted for the former.

The contract is expected to have a 3-year duration, and the club has promised a healthy transfer fund for Machado.

Hard working career

Manuel Machado never played professional football and has steadily worked his way up from the bottom, starting as a youth coach at his beloved Vitoria Guimaraes – his home town club – in the early 90s.

He first came under the spotlight after taking over at third-division Moreirense, guiding them into the top flight within two years, having won both the third and second division. In their debut season in the top flight in 2003/2004 the club finished in 9th position, a fantastic achievement for a club of extremely modest resources from a small town.

The following season he took over at Guimaraes where the club finished 5th, earning a UEFA Cup qualification spot. He then moved to Madeira to manage Nacional, making history there as Nacional finished in a record high position of 5th place in the league, again earning the team a UEFA Cup slot.

Yet again Manuel Machado moved on, but this time had two unsuccessful stints at Academica and Braga. He rejoined Nacional da Madeira and subsequently broke his own record, as the club finished in 4th place last year, and subsequently competed well in the Europa League this season.

Machado will be hoping to achieve similar success at Vitoria Guimaraes, one of Portugal’s best supported clubs.
