Quaresma making no excuses after “terrible” season

Winger focusing on 2009/10

quaresmaRicardo Quaresma is refusing to make excuses for what he describes as the worst season of his career last year, but hopes to be fit and ready to show his true capabilities next term.

The Portugal winger moved to Italian giants Inter last summer from Porto, but was shipped out to Chelsea on loan during the January transfer window, only to spend much of the second half of the campaign on the substitutes bench.

“It was terrible,” Quaresma told Maisfutebol. “I think it was the worst time I’ve have in terms of playing, being an option, being trusted. It was the worst moment I have gone through.

“It’s true that I won a championship (with Inter) and a cup (with Chelsea) but how many games did I play? So I can not say I feel like a champion. I didn’t play as much as I wanted and didn’t show my value. I don’t consider myself a champion.

With Quaresma looking set to return to Inter for next season, Nerazurri boss Jose Mourinho has suggested that the lack of pre-season preparation gained by Quaresma last year due to his transfer had an affect on the 25-year-old’s ability to perform. However, the player himself is reluctant to justify his poor form.

“There is no point making excuses for the bad season I had, but it is true that I need the rhythm and confidence you get from pre-season before taking part in the league. The fact is I had a very bad pre-season. It was stressful and there was some anxiety because I didn’t know if I was moving or not, but this no excuse for anybody.

“I need my speed and confidence. It was a very difficult pre-season for me. But I don’t think it’s worth making excuses, attributing blame to this or that. The most important thing is to look at ourselves and see where we can do better. Now I’m ready to be there for pre-season and show my worth.

“It’s important to take responsibility and I have no problem admitting that I had a bad season. I am ready to face the new season and I know that I am going to return to normal.”

Ronaldo may be the best player for Portugal and in the world but that doesnt mean your suppose to insult the other players with great potential. Simao is not old. This might be his highlight year for Portugal at the wc. Deco isnt old either. He is out of shape. Look at Liedson 32 and playing like hes 25. Quaresma is an impact player. He just needs playing time. He will miss the wc because of Varela. Simao is more complete then Ronaldo. He is not only a star but a class act and also a team player. Ronaldo is still learning.

Quaresma is more talented than people want to give him credit. A Ronaldo? No! Does he have the potential and talent to play at Ronaldos level? Yes!
How can a player ever have a chance to get his game on when he doesn't play? Wait they aren't any good because they don't play much but they suck because they're on the bench? Where's the logic in that?

The Portugal National Team is a damn shame, all that talent but they can't play together for sh*t. in 2008 Deco was the glue that kept them together and the goal tender Ricardo was the cancer that killed them.

U can't just build a national team with just "all star" type of players. U need to have star players but u also need players that work well together because otherwise all u have is a team full of big names who really don't do sh*t.

What's Nani doin? experimenting and trying to be a Ronaldo? They need an offense that can create oppurtunities out front not take half court shots any chance they get out of spite.... etc....

I personally would love to see him back to what he does best, scare the living daylight out of defenders. Going to an Inter side managed by a man who is somewhat of a Saddam Hussein figure was the worst decision of his career. Why anyone thinks Mourinho is great is beyond me, the guy has a habit of ruining the careers of good players. Quaresma needs to find a new club, go back to Porto/Lisbon or Man Utd maybe? I'm no Utd fan but being realistic, he's the type of player that would suit their style of play. An ideal - not perfect - replacement for the bigot Ronaldo. Plus with all these players leaving for La Liga, we need someone to entertain us here in the Premier League.
best of luck

I sincereley hope Quaresma can make good on his word and recover his form. I really, really want him to play for Portugal and become a world class winger like Ronaldo. Right now, I have to agree with some other posters here when I say that he is not in Ronaldo's league right now. He still has a long way before you can talk about him in the same sentence as Ronaldo.
Having said that, I think Quaresma has great skill and potential and I hope he does great next year and goes to the World Cup with Portugal!

Simao was a great player fro Benfica. Many times, he carried the whole team. I'm sure he is also doing well for Atletico. I like Simao very much, but he's never made much of an impact for the Portuguese National team. As for Quaresma, we can only hope he steps up this year and fills the role as a complimentary player to Cristiano. Most people don't think he can do it, but I hope he does. It's a key year for Ricardo Q.

I knew Inter was getting the short end of the stick when they were interested in Quaresma. What was the transfer fee again 30 million euros+ possibly a future player for Portugal a player named Pele. Man I always knew Simao was better than Quaresma, even when they both were playing in Portugal. Some dumb people were blinded by Quaresma's flashy play, but in reality Simao got the job done. By the way Simao was the best player for Atletico not second best, any Atletico fan would tell you that. Sure Forlan got the European Golden Boot, but Simao made that season for attackers like Forlan and Aguero. I just hope that Quaresma gets back to his best form, because the Portuguese national team needs a fighter.

Although Quaresma had a bad season he should not be overlooked. A player with his skill could help the Portuguese national team off the bench. As for Simao, a player his size on the wing needs speed to succeed at the international level. It's not that he has gotten old fast, he has never been an impact player at the international level. He's had his shot, time to move on. To me Danny (when healthy) is a better fit.

Your on crack if u think he's better that Simao old fast ? he was Atletico's second best player behind Forlan even better than the great Aguerro , wats up with this love affair over Quaresma face it hes not that young stud anymore hes been a flop everywhere he goes except for Porto .. Inter tried to low ball Porto over his transfer fee and he left for Inter too late to assert himself.

Of course he is not Ronaldo. Who is?

He is still a phenominal winger and the national team would be better served with him starting over Simao (who got old real fast) or Boa Morte (who got old and slow 2 years ago).

If this guy retains momentum, nothing will stand in his way. He is as explosive as C. Ronaldo and he can be as sharp as Ibrahimovic when it comes to scoring goals.. He is back where he belongs.. I wish him all the best to make a very remarkable come back....
