Makukula fails to shine in front of QueirozAnkaragucu 3-0 Kayserispor Carlos Queiroz picked an unfortunate weekend to travel to see Ariza Makukula in action in Turkey. The Portugal boss was in attendance as the on-loan Benfica striker’s team Kayserispor were well beaten by Ankaragucu in the capital.
Makukula came into the game in exceptional form, having scored 12 goals in his last 12 league matches. The 29-year-old currently tops the goalscoring charts in the Super Lig with eighteen goals, leading many to argue the case that Makukula is worthy of international consideration. Although he failed to score in a heavy 3-0 defeat, Makukula did win a penalty for his side when the match was still goalless. However, the Portuguese did not take the spot kick himself and it was subsequently saved. Geremi gave the hosts the lead from a penalty at the other end shortly afterwards, and Robert Vittek bagged a brace to give the hosts a comfortable win. Makukula remained on the pitch for the full ninety minutes, but will be disappointed not to have continued his excellent goalscoring form as Queiroz watched from the stands. By Sean Gillen |
