End of the road for Jose Mota

Leixoes fire coach

Jose MotaJose Mota has left his post as Leixoes coach. The experienced coach has paid the price for a poor season, with the club from the outskirts of Porto languishing in the relegation zone.

The Leixoes board met with Mota last night and arrived at the conclusion that the best solution was for coach and club to part ways.

The 45-year-old Mota made his name as a head coach in almost a decade at the helm of Pacos de Ferreira, during which time he maintained one of Portugal’s more modest clubs at a competitive level in the top flight, qualified them for the UEFA Cup for the first time ever and won many plaudits for his attacking philosophy.

He made the switch to Leixoes at the start of last season and enjoyed a superb start to the campaign, sitting top of the table after ten matches before eventually falling to a highly respectable 6th-place finish.

“We achieved extraordinary feats, and I believe I have contributed to making Leixoes a bigger club,” was Mota’s reaction to his sacking.

“I would like to thank the support I always felt I was given by the fans and the directors. In the meeting last night we decided that my departure would probably be the best course of action.”

Leixoes are expected to name their new coach in the coming hours.
