Leixoes appoint Fernando Castro Santos as new coach

Spaniard takes over from Jose Mota

Fernando Castro SantosLeixoes wasted no time in appointing the successor to Jose Mota, who was relieved of his duties yesterday. Spanish coach Fernando Castro Santos is the new man at the helm at the Estadio do Mar.

“We are all very confident because we know we have a team that will give everything they have and a little more,” said Castro Santos in his presentation press conference.

Indeed, the 57-year-old former Braga coach takes the post with unbounded confidence. “Be it Barcelona, Benfica or the best team in the world, nobody eats their opponents on the pitch.

“There may be differences in the way clubs are treated by the newspapers, radio, television, but on the field we are all equal and that is where we will show our worth.”

Leixoes are currently in the relegation zone, but just one point behind Vitoria de Setubal and safety.

Castro Santos becomes only the second foreign coach currently in charge of a Portuguese top-flight club. Dutchman Mitchell Van der Gaag is manager of Maritimo.
