Portuguese Liga gets new sponsorLiga Vitalis also to be renamed Just a few months into his new position, Liga president Fernando Gomes has already brought in new sponsorship money to the Liga as the league will now be known as the Liga Zon Sagres.
For the last two years, the Portuguese league was called the Liga Sagres, but telecommunications giant ZON has now added their brand to the league's advertising/naming rights. It is not known exactly how much money ZON will pump into the Liga. Sagres was contributing 4.25 million euros per annum. It is believed that ZON will take over broadcast rights when the Liga's deal with Sport TV expires (at the end of 2011). Liga president Fernando Gomes was delighted with the partnership and feels that it will bring 'more stability' to the Portuguese championship. "This contract is for four years and it corresponds with the mandate of the president of the Liga. It permits us to have a more stable future," said Gomes. The money does not end there as the Liga Viatlis will no longer be known as such, but as the Liga Orangina as Gomes also struck a deal with the French soft drink manufacturer. "From our conversations, we honoured our intention to rename the Liga Vitalis. Fortunately, a product that is extrmemly congenial, which will become available in Portugal, allows us to have an interesting name. Orangina is actually owned by the japanese company SUNTORY they have the rights to sell it in France,Spain and Portugal.
