Liga to implement new technologies

President wants to reduce officiating errors

fernando_gomes.jpgOne of the hottest topics for debate lately is the implementation of technology in today's football. Somebody who is all for the introduction of such advancements is Liga Zon Sagres president Fernando Gomes.

The issue of using technology in football has been a hot topic amongst fans of the sport around the world with supporters on both sides of the argument.

One of those people is the Portuguese Liga's head honcho Fernando Gomes and the newly appointed president wants to bring new methods to assist officiating and keep up with the demands of the game.

While speaking to a room of Portugal's top officials and assistants in Braga, Gomes would not say exactly what he would bring in or when it would happen, but did mention that more means would be implemented.

"New technologies reduce errors and are useful for the truth in the sport of football," said Gomes. "Earphones have been introduced and there are other methods of implementation that are being analysed."

"We want to strongly promote the improvement of quality, not to eliminate errors, but to reduce them. Nobody is perfect and it is perfectly natural that some decisions taken at that very second are not the best ones."

Gomes added that the Liga wants to work together with the league officials, stating that 3.6 million euros has already been invested in the training and development of officials in Portugal this year.

Really great to see the Liga stepping up and acting as an example for the rest of the world's leagues. Nice to know that the Portuguese will be on the cutting edge of modern officiating.
