Last-gasp Fernandez penalty sees Sporting beat Maritimo

10-man Naval edge Portimonense; Leiria and Pacos stalemate

Matias Fernandez scored from the penalty spot in the final minute of normal time to hand Sporting a 1-0 win and all three points against Maritimo at Alvalade tonight.

Sporting, who issued a first league start to Alberto Zapater, missed several chances in the second period, having struggled to deal with Maritimo’s midfield in the first half. Despite a far from impressive performance, the last-gasp penalty from Fernandez, after Liedson had been fouled by Tcho, gives Paulo Sergio’s men a much-needed victory.

“It was a deserved victory,” said the Sporting coach after the match. “We were creating chances and we always believed. When people least expect it, we will score three or four goals in a match.”

Meanwhile, his opposite number, van der Gaag, took a different view. “I do not think it was a fair result. We controlled much of the game and did everything we could to win. It’s not easy to play here and the result is hard to take because we deserved at least a draw. I can’t say anything bad about my players because they were good, but we were unlucky.”

Earlier on, Naval managed to survive the dismissal of Carlitos fifteen minutes from time to hold on to a 1-0 win at Portimonense. Frenchman Nicolas Godemenche scored the winning goal just before half time after an impressive first forty-five minutes from Naval, and the visitors resisted an improved Portimonense showing after the break to consign the Algarve team to bottom place in the standings.

Pacos de Ferreira have four points from their opening two games after playing out a goalless draw with Leiria at the Dr. Magalhães Pessoa Stadium. Leiria had the better of the play, in what was an uneventful match, which leaves Pacos with four points from their opening two matches and Leiria with two draws.
