Sporting too strong for Naval

Naval 1-3 Sporting

Liedson and Yannick celebrate Sporting's openerSporting showed further signs that they are gradually building a strong team with a dominant display in Figueira da Foz. Goals from Liedson, Fernandez (penalty) and Yannick Djalo comfortably saw off Naval, for whom Joao Pedro scored a consolation.

Sporting started the match with five players who came into the club during the close season. Some of the new recruits had so far struggled to convince the club’s fans they have added quality to the team, but that changed tonight with Nuno Andre Coelho, Evaldo, Andre Santos, Maniche and Valdes all enjoying bright games.

The last of that list, winger Jaime Valdes, was particularly impressive, at last looking like justifying his three million euro price tag as he ran rings round the hapless Jonathas throughout the match. Maniche also stood out, especially in the first half.

Such was Sporting’s dominance over an inoffensive Naval that the only surprise was how long it took the Lisbon club to find the back of the net. Djalo hit the post with a header but it was strike partner Liedson who broke the deadlock shortly before half time as he turned in an Abel cross with a clever back-heel to open his account for the season.

Matias magic

Matias Fernandez almost scored an immediate second but his brilliant turn and fierce shot was well saved by Salin. The Chilean did not have to wait long to score. On the hour mark Lupede was incorrectly adjudged to have fouled Liedson in the box. Fernandez did not complain as he tucked away his second successive penalty in league play.

Two became three ten minutes later as the alert Yannick Djalo latched onto an underhit Lupede back-pass to side-foot the ball past the exposed Salin. Naval hit back as Joao Pedro turned sharply and fired in a fine shot to reduce the arrears but it was too little too late for the Navalistas.

Yannick has performed well in these first few games but I still don't think he's ready to play for Portugal. He has great speed and trickery but he needs better control. Almeida should still start at striker for Portugal in my opinion. It certainly wouldn't be a bad thing to build him up into a good 2nd option for Portugal. Liedson won't be around too much longer.

Sporting need to keep improving and not take backwood steps.

Djalo needs to be used every game, his proving more valuable than Liedson at the moment.
yannick should be on selecaoo

Indeed Djalo is starting this season remarkably well, scoring spectacular goals, but can we stop staying that he is a young prodigy. He is already 24 years old, the age when most players are hitting their peak. Ronaldo 25, Nani 23, Messi 23, Aguero 22, and alot more. But look at him, he has not made a big impact on the league still, not to mention Europe. For the last 3 seasons, I have been watching him play, hoping he will grow up to be the No. 1 striker for Portugal, but still now I have not seen him erupted. Maybe, he just does not have what it takes to be a hot-shot. Let this season be a breakthrough season for him so that he can move to a much bigger league. Then maybe some mid-table club from England or Spain will purchase him, and Portugal will use him upfront.

Sporting were by far the better team, but the first goal was clearly offside, the second wasn't a penalty, and the third was the result of an idiotic back pass from the naval defender.
However, Sporting were very impressive and it looks like they finally found the right defender to partner carrico.
