Liga Transfer News Wrap-up

Anticlimactic deadline in Portugal

logo_liga_zon_sagres.pngBoring! That pretty much sums up the day in Portugal on the final day of the summer transfer period. Then again, not all teams can flex their financial muscle like AC Milan or the Spanish powerhouse Hercules (who's their sugar daddy?).

Nonetheless, deals were done, but not with the pizazz that many were hoping for, instead the window was closed shut and the curtains were drawn.

Where shall we start? How about Sporting Braga. The Arsenalistas were responsible for the most name-worthy deal as the club snapped up former Sporting midfielder Custodio. The 27-year-old was released from his contract at Vitoria Guimaraes and signed a three-year deal with the Champions League debutants.

Sticking with Braga, the club loaned Spanish striker Jose Callado to Atletico Madrid for the remainder of the season.

Let's see, let's see, ah, Sporting. The Lisbon club tried to sneak a signing underneath all of our noses when they successfully landed Internacional de Porto Alegre's Tales de Souza. No details as to the terms of the negotiation.

Um, um, um, um, Porto! The Dragoes were not buyers at the deadline, but managed to arrange loan deals for duo Miguel Lopes and Tomas Costa. Lopes will join Spanish club Real Betis and Costa will spend the year in Romania with CFR Cluj.

Benfica - the reigning champs did not make a peep as the club lost out on Barcelona's Hleb (Birmingham City). Although, the Aguias did manage to lock 11 of their youth players to professional contracts. A lot to name, but if you want  to find out who they are, let me know.  In other team news, Benfica found a home for striker Nelson Oliveira as the U19 starlet will join Pacos de Ferreira for the rest of the season.

As for Pacos, the club also acquired 22-year-old stiriker Padraig Amond from Sligo Rovers. The U21 Irish international scored 17 goals for Rovers last season.

Maritimo secured Panathinaikos pair Christos Melissis (central defender) and Evangelos Mantzios (striker) on loan for the year (thanks to Greek Footy for the early tip).

Uniao de Leiria were extremely busy as the Leirense captured 27-year-old striker Arthur Bernhardt, 23-year-old left-back Milos Obradovic and former FC Porto player Leandro Lima.

Leiria were not the only busy bodies as Portimonense beefed up their attack with former Kawasaki Frontale striker Renatinho.

Naval did not want to feel left out and nabbed a marksman themselves in former Vitoria Guimaraes youth product Lucas Klysman.

Olhanense were not to be out done by anyone as the Algarve-based club recruited 28-year-old Brazilian striker Cadu, another Brazilian striker in Adilson (on loan from Maritimo) and Paulo Renato. But not making the squad were Guga and Zequinha.

Finally, Academica signed Portugal U19 goalkeeper Joao Figueiredo.

That's it for now folks, we'll touch base in January when the window opens again - don't forget to dress warm (yeah, I know, I won't quit my day job).

Keep your eyes on Mantzios: he is very talented, and the Portugese Liga seems to fit his way of playing...

as a sligo rovers supporter i wish paraic amond all the best from all in sligo for a successful career in portugal - please note that he didnt score the 17 goals in our league last year but in the current season which still has 9 games to run. We will indeed miss him in the run in as he was without a doubt the our goal scoring ace this year.

Miguel - Madrid
Nobody in portuguese league wants Ricardo, the former portuguese international goalkeeper? He was discharged from Betis (2nd spanish division) and have no club.

Maybe he should call Filipao to get a job...

Something that has flown under the radar on most sites is that Makukula was not loaned out again and it seems like he will stay with Benfica at this point. For all the people calling out for Quaresma to be on the national team, Makukula is the player that was the top goal scorer in that league and I would assume that Quaresma is trying to at the very least to get close to what Makukula accomplished.

I know success in Turkey doesn't mean success in our Liga but I hope he gets a chance to play a couple of matches.

Two eye-catching signings! It will be interesting to see how they get on, especially Amond who is current top scorer in Ireland.
