Benfica edge 10-man Academica; Hulk bags brace as Porto cruise past Naval

FC Porto 3-1 Naval; Academica 0-1 Benfica

FC Porto remain eight points clear at the top of the Liga Zon Sagres this evening after two more goals for Hulk following a Falcao opener saw the Dragons retain their unbeaten record with a 3-1 victory over Naval.

Meanwhile, a 19th-minute Javier Saviola goal edged Benfica past Academica, who played most of the match with ten men after Pape Sow was dismissed in the first half.

Academica 0-1 Benfica

Benfica were made to work hard in Coimbra to keep up their winning run despite playing the majority of the match against ten men. A controversial Saviola goal earned the Eagles victory and kept the distance between Jorge Jesus’ team and FC Porto to eight points.

Benfica came into the match on the back of five straight wins in all competitions and 10 wins in 11 games in league play. However the visitors struggled to repeat their free-flowing football of recent weeks against a determined and well-organised Academica team.

Striker Saviola kept up his incredible recent goalscoring run – he has now found the net in 8 of his last 9 games – albeit in highly fortunate fashion to put Benfica one up on 18 minutes. Cardozo’s powerful free kick hit the Argentine to wrong-foot Peiser and nestle in the net. The Argentine was in an offside position and the ball deflected off his arm, but the referee waved away furious protests from the home players and the goal stood.

Watch Benfica’s controversial winner:

Salvio missed a good chance to double Benfica’s lead before Roberto saved well from Diogo Valente, but Academica were handed a huge blow on 36 minutes as Pape Sow was sent off for flying into a reckless high challenge on Cardozo.

On the stroke of half time Carlos Martins contrived to miss an opportunity when it seemed easier to score and the players went into the break with one goal separating the teams.

In the second half Academica’s ten men showed commendable fighting spirit to make life difficult for Benfica. The hosts were twice a whisker away from equalising in the 68th minute as first Diogo Valente just failed to get his foot to a Sougou cross, then Bischoff’s effort beat Roberto but bounced back off the post.

Shortly afterwards Luisao almost made the game safe for the Lisbon side as he headed against the post.

A nervy Benfica had to withstand some late Academica pressure, which intensified in the closing stages as Ruben Amorim was forced off injured and Fabio Coentrao was sent off for picking up a second yellow card. However, the reigning champions held firm to keep up their chase of Porto.

Goals:
[0-1] Saviola, 18

FC Porto 3-1 Naval

It was top versus bottom at the Estadio do Dragao and there was no upset as FC Porto strolled to a straightforward victory.

A low-key first forty-five minutes burst into life with two goals in a minute just before the half-time whistle. It was the usual suspects on the scoresheet. Falcao took advantage of a quickly taken free kick to knock in Silvestre Varela’s cross.

One soon became two as a beautiful move saw the ball worked to Hulk with a series of rapid first-time passes and the Brazilian made no mistake.

Watch Hulk’s first goal:

Hulk made it 3-0 on 53 minutes, taking advantage of a bad mistake from Orestes, to reinforce his leadership of the goalscoring charts. The forward has now scored 16 goals in the Liga ZON Sagres and 24 in all competitions this season. Porto will face a tough task keeping the powerful Brazilian at the Estadio do Dragao beyond this summer.

Naval scored a late consolation from the penalty spot as Fucile brought down Gomis in the box, who picked himself up and slotted the ball past Helton.

Porto’s fourth successive win in the league sees them remain eight points clear of Benfica and huge favourites to lift the title at the end of the season.

Goals:
[1-0] Falcao, 44
[2-0] Hulk, 45
[3-0] Hulk, 53
[3-1] Gomis, 89 (pen)

Joe I agree it hit the outstretched part of the arm but on the replay Saviola is turning away from the ball and not into it.. he also does not move his arm towards the ball. The rule still is it has to be hand to ball for it to be a foul.

I totally agree with you though that they were having a hard time of it and without the goal it would've been totally dicey, then again with that referree.. he might have given a penalty or two to Benfica anyways for calling back the first. The Cognitive Bias will prevail and in this game like so many others the Ref usually picks the bigger club to succeed.

In all fairness to the Ref it happened really quickly and even us all here with the slow instant replay can't all agree on the call, although the majority of us can agree he was offside and the linesman should've caught that.

The only thing we can do as fans is complain to the Fed, UEFA, & FIFA until they finally bring in the changes to help refs do a better job and not hinder them.

Just in case some of you still think it's not a hand ball, watch the play and you will see that it's the outstretched part of his arm that touches the ball... you can complain all you want about the penalty, A penalty is not a guarantee goal, this one was. Had this not gone in this could have gone either way, and they way Benfica was playing with an extra man I doubt they would be able to get the 3 points...
I'm glad

Some Benfica are actually objective to the reality. Others let their biased opinions fool them. There's a rotton apple in any group. Guimaraes was robbed against Braga last year and I will admit it too.

you all are idiots anyways. Everyone gets calls and some don't. Thats how football has been and will always be. Quit complaining.

Terrible officiating on the Academica-Benfica game. I knew there was going to be some controversy on this goal but the ref missed some bad calls and also made some bad calls. Unimpressive win but these types of games happen.
Agree with Mdot & E Gomes

Goal was offside, but no handball as there was no hand to ball.

I also agree with the other posters that suggested there should've been some Benfica penalty shots. Coentrao's yellow card was silly.. the Ref had a bad game on both sides of the ball.

I guess it does happen more for the bigger clubs, this is not exclusive to Portugal.

Even Braga, Bryan benefits greatly from the Ref's decision from time to time. It is not right, but many of us have been complaining constructively to UEFA & FIFA for years about the game and the officiating, with no result. I believe they prefer the status quo.

The technical terms for the Reffing issues are Confirmation bias (the tendency to search for or interpret information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions), and also the Bandwagon effect (the tendency to do or believe things because many other people do or believe the same. These are related to groupthink and herd behavior. Those are Pre-Cognitive Biases that affect the game and will have us bantering forever.

To be fair it is hard on the match officials when you have 24 (I included the Managers) cheating around them and only 4 sets of eyes watching in real time, with only 1 that can make the major calls.

That is why when I have written letters to the major organizations I have always made suggestions that constructively take the human element out of the decision making process. Have equipment that makes the decision instead of the person with the inevitable bias.

Now you can never take the human out of the decision making process fully, but with the right tools you can remove the majority of the bias.

Now I know this is impractical for your local footie games, but on the world stage in the biggest competitions that is the way it should be. I am tired of watching Euros, or World Cups where cheats are allowed to propser continuously because of the Bandwagon effect and Confirmation bias.

As we all know, Benfica gets all the calls all the time.
Oh yeah, so does Porto and ... Nevermind, the "Maca Podres" are no longer relevant.

In any case this was a horrible match, that I can't deny that we stole it. I have nothing good to say about it. No it wasn't a handball, since he clearly kept his arms tight to the body as he turned. He was offsides.
Yes there were plenty of other calls that could have gone Benfica's way, but the fact is that we could and should have done better.

Porto is just motoring along, and I don't see them tripping up anywhere. Unless a rash of injuries hits them, they might just have the league title in hand.
I also wonder how hard they will go after the Europa League title. Especially with their continued presence in the other cups.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but it will be interesting to see what Porto will do with Hulk and Falcao at the end of teh season.

the goal wasn't legit, it's true. But have you seen 2 fouls in Academica box? Where was the second yellow card for the defender, who stopped the ball by hand? then, stop talking about the referees.

Porto is still unstoppable. Any chances for Benfica?

Um.. Carlos.. are you mentally able to make a simple post? I mean.. favoured teams aside here, do you understand the rules of football/soccer? I don't think you do. With the ball travelling at the speed it was, I wouldn't call it a handball since Saviola is only trying to shield himself, but he IS offside. (Are you trying to say there are no offsides on a free kick? Must be some new rule made just after that goal). Watch the video in the post (and not some shitty one where you can't see the angle at all). Specifically at 20 seconds in. Come back when you've opened your eyes.

Bryan's right, Saviola was offside and it was a handball. I still don't understand why Martins decided to chip the keeper instead of just smashing the ball into the net. I congratulate Academica for giving us a hard fought match, even though were playing with 10 men.

Porto pretty much won the liga already, but there us still a huge battle for the european spots. My guess is...

LOL I love how you like to hand pick one item out of a match. How about the two penalties Benfica should have had? Overall this ref was brutal for both sides.
