Zapater and Patricio make it away-day joy for Sporting

Maritimo 0-3 Sporting

Rui PatricioA brace from Zapater and a Liedson goal gave Sporting a morale-boosting 3-0 victory in Madeira against Maritimo tonight. But the Lions were thankful to goalkeeper Rui Patricio who produced three outstanding saves when his team were leading by a single goal.

Before last week, Spanish midfielder Alberto Zapater had never scored two goals in a match in over 250 career games. He has now done so twice in five days.

Just when a forgettable first half seemed to be heading towards an inevitable goalless conclusion, Vukcevic broke down the right flank and whipped a cross into the box where the onrushing Zapater expertly headed into the corner of the net from the penalty spot.

The goal served to wake up both sets of players and paved the way for an entertaining second 45 minutes, the first twenty of which were dominated by the home team, especially once long-time FC Porto target Kleber entered the fray in the 53rd minute.

Maritimo on top

Kleber immediately forced Patricio into a fine save from a header, and the Portugal goalkeeper then pulled of an excellent double save from Baba and Heldon. With Sporting wavering alarmingly, Patricio outdid himself shortly afterwards with a miraculous reaction stop to deny Heldon.

Moments later Sporting scored a crucial second as Zapater showed excellent skill to neatly turn his marker and fire past Boeck into the corner of the net.

Watch Zapater’s crucial second goal:

The goal knocked the stuffing out of the islanders. With Torsiglieri reinforcing their back line, Sporting managed to stem Maritimo’s attacking play and started creating chances of their own at the other end of the pitch.

After coming close to scoring himself, Valdes did all the spade work to set up a tap-in for Liedson to complete an ultimately resounding win. Despite the state of flux the Lisbon club find themselves in, Sporting have won five out of their last six games in all competitions, scoring 16 goals in the process.

Rui The Future National Goalkeeper?

Rui Patricio has the potential to be the national goalkeeper for 10 years if he can become consistent. Hopefully he will continue the fine form and work back into the national team picture. Portugal needs a dependable GK as the jury is out on Eduardo.
