FC Porto held at home by Academica

Braga beat Leiria and move to within one point of leaders

HulkThis most enthralling of Liga ZON Sagres races took another twist tonight as leaders FC Porto followed up their thrilling win at Benfica last week with a poor performance and two dropped points against Academica at the Dragao.

An Edinho goal put Academica ahead at the interval, and it needed an injury time Hulk penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw for the Dragons. Earlier in the evening Braga had beaten Uniao de Leiria 2-1, thanks to goals from Douglao and Lima. The Arsenalistas are now just one point behind Porto at the top of the table.

FC Porto 1-1 Academica

Having beaten Benfica 3-2 at the Estadio da Luz last Friday, all expectations were for a highly motivated Porto to go all out and build on their 3-point advantage at the top of the standings as the title race moves into the home straight. The fact that they were facing an Academica side that hadn’t won for two months (eight games) only added to the feeling this match was a ’home banker’.

It was therefore all the more mystifying to witness a turgid performance from the Portuguese champions in the opening 45 minutes, with a complete lack of aggressiveness, laboured movement and some atrocious passing. Porto were not helped by an injury picked up by Fernando, with the in-form midfielder replaced by Defour.

A well organised Academica team took advantage as Edinho headed in a Saulo cross in the 39th minute (his third goal in four games) to give the Students the lead going into the break.

Porto came out more positively in the second half, although the stylish football that marked the first and last twenty minutes of last week’s classico remained conspicuous by its absence. Twice the home supporters roared for a penalty as first Hulk then James went down in the box. On both occasions the referee responded by showing the yellow card to the Porto forwards for simulation.

An increasingly desperate Porto coach Vitor Pereira, who replaced Sapunaru with Djalma shortly after half time, added further to his side’s attacking options by throwing on striker Kleber for centre-back Rolando with 30 minutes remaining.

Moutinho denied by the bar

Joao Moutinho was unlucky not to score the equaliser on 67 minutes as for the second match running his well-struck free kick hit the crossbar. Despite the increased energy levels from the home side, Academica goalkeeper Peiser was largely untroubled.

Academica’s resistance was finally broken on the 90 minute mark as Pape Sow handled in the box for an obvious penalty and was promptly sent off for his troubles. Hulk blasted the spot kick into the net, and Porto almost grabbed an unlikely victory moments later as Peiser made a superb interception to prevent Hulk’s cross from allowing Janko what would have been a certain goal.

A disappointed Vitor Pereira admitted after the match that “Porto did not exist in the first half,” in an eerily similar gripe to his post-match interview after Academica had knocked Porto out of the Portuguese Cup in November.

With eight Liga matches remaining Porto know they will need a big improvement if their want to retain their title.

Porto:
Helton, Alvaro Pereira, Maicon, Sapunaru (Djalma, 53), Rolando (Kleber, 61), Fernando (Defour, 37), Lucho Gonzalez, Joao Moutinho, Janko, James Rodriguez

Goals:
[0-1] Edinho, 39
[1-1] Hulk, 90

Braga 2-1 Uniao de Leiria

Lima against LeiriaThe form of the two sides going into the match could hardly have been more contrasting. Braga are on a club record run of straight Liga victories (extended to eleven after tonight), while bottom of the table Leiria have now gone ten matches without experiencing that winning feeling.

Braga were not at their best, but were good enough to bag another three points with relative ease. The hosts were well on top in the first half, and only some fine goalkeeping by Oblak coupled with wayward finishing kept the score down to one-nil at the interval, centre-back Douglao finishing off a set piece.

Yet having been completely dominated, Leiria were unlucky not to equalise on the stroke of half time, as a Bruno Moraes goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

That man Lima doubled Braga’s lead in the 48th minute as made the most of a Schaffer mistake. Lima thus returns to the top of the Liga scoring chart, having now notched 17 goals so far this campaign.

The Arsenalistas proceeded to take their foot of the accelerator and Leiria enjoyed more of the play, especially after the introduction of Swedish substitute Barkroth who looks a good find. A superb cross from the 20-year-old winger set up Bruno Moraes to head into the net and make it 2-1.

The goal acted as a wakeup call for Braga, who reasserted their authority and fabricated chances to score a third, but no further goals were added. The Braga bandwagon rolls on.

Braga:
Quim, Salino, Douglao, Nuno Coelho, Elderson, Custodio, Hugo Viana, Mossoro (Paulo Cesar, 84), Ruben Amorim (Ukra, 8 (Djamal, 72)), Barbosa, Lima

Goals:
[1-0] Douglao, 24
[2-0] Lima, 48
[2-1] Bruno Moraes, 62

good ol' club rivalry

As far as I'm concerned, both Porto and Benfica should probably be keeping a closer eye on Braga than on each other. Braga do have a very tough schedule, but they have shown their ability to adapt week in and week out and they stand a real chance of winning the title this season.

Benfica do have their derby match with SCP coming up next month and will probably drop one or two more points here and there before the end of the season. As for Porto, there last major hurdle is not until late April/early May when they travel to Maritimo and host SCP. If they beat Braga in a few weeks though, I think they'll win the title.

My money is on Porto again this season, but you never know....Benfica 2nd, Braga 3rd. What a great finish to the Liga Zon Sagres this year.

As a Benfiquista, the last thing we have to do is defend our clubs history. And yes, history does matter in futebol.
Benfica was the 21st largest revenue earner last year, not including transfers buy or sells. If those are included the ranking goes way higher. The first club outside England, Spain, Italy and France. That kind of world wide acknowledgement comes from history.

Like I said, if Benfica win the league, I don't care how many times any team beat us during the season. If we lose it due to losing to Porto I'll be angry. Simple as that.
I hate losing at home, no matter who we play.

Let me add that I think that the top teams will continue to drop points before the season is over.
Frankly I'm thrilled that all Benfiquistas are waiting on the CL Quarter Finals Draw. I know Tripeiros that wish they were doing the same.
re benfica history

You benficistas make me laugh. If you want to talk about history and success how many european trophies and world club cup trophies have benfica won? How many have porto won? Let's see 2 champions leagues , 2 europa league , 1 euro super cup, and 2 world club cups. As opposed to benfica's 2 european cups. Benfica might have won the portuguese league more times in their history but in all honesty that is about it. All I can say is 3 euro trophies since 2004. Given the modern era and how difficult it is to compete with big spending clubs in europe these achievements speak volumes.
Bitter...me? Not in the slightest!

How could i be bitter when speaking of the great history of my club? (Super LOL)!!! So manny/nj... by your logic, then everything in the past just has to be forgotten completely? History means nothing? So then for example, because Pele played in the 60s, we must forget what a great player he was? Forget that he is still probably the greatest of all time? Yeah of course Porto fans want to forget about history...because history shows that Porto started becoming succesful only by the mid-80s!!

I am not putting down Porto, they are a great club and of course have been consistently the most succesful Portuguese club from the mid-90s onwards. The point i am making is that neither Porto nor any other Portuguese club will ever match what Benfica did in our heyday...entirely due to the point which you have just agreed with on your post. Football nowadays is money-orientated completely, and it is almost always going to be the clubs who can spend big who will be winning the Champions League. As a result no Portuguese club will dominate in Europe the way Benfica did in the 60s. This is just a fact amigo, accept it!!!
andre/uk you are so bitter lol

every time a benfica fan talks about how good they are, prepare to go back at least a good 25 years. usually it's 50 years to when they won in europe. but there's a reason why you've never done that again, winning today is much more difficult because of the format expansion and the huge discrepancy in wages paid by portuguese clubs vs spanish/english/italian/german/french clubs.

benfica couldn't keep up and got brushed to the side... guess who still takes a euro trophy every now and then against all the odds... FC PORTO

You Porto fans are all alike, remind me a lot of Chelsea fans. Because you've had a lot of success in the last decade or 2, you arrogantly think that you're some kind of giant of the game all of a sudden. Let me retort to your comments with 2 key points:

1.) Porto will never EVER match what Benfica has done in Europe: we dominated the European cup for an entire decade, and played in half (5) of all the European Cup finals of the 60s. Only 3 other clubs have matched such a record of so many finals in such a short space of time (Madrid in the 50s, Liverpool in the late 70s/early 80s and AC Milan in the late 80s/early 90s). We have played in a total of 7 finals, and only these other 3 clubs mentioned have played in more.

2.) Porto's 2 finals to date have been isolated incidents. Also don't forget that before the mid-80s Porto had done absolutely nothing and were no big deal at all...the 3rd team of Portugal!

The point I'm making is just because you've had success in recent years, don't be arrogant and shrug off the force of history and prestige, because you still have an awful long way to go before you can really start comparing your club to SLB!!!
Train keeps rolling and stoping

Didn't see either game, but it's looking like the season is holding true to form. Porto has shown no consistency in p,ay, and Braga has proven to have fortitude to grab the opportunity.
Let me add that I think Benfica will most likely drop points somewhere down the line as well.

As for the comment on how Benfiquistas would feel in wining the league while losing at home to Porto continually, they would feel great. Win the league and all is well. Keep in mind we don't know the CL draw yet.
I am gutted because we lost to Porto at home, but if we come back to win the league, I don't think anyone will be sad.
If we lose the league due to those dropped points, than yes, it would be painful.

And I thought the referee was good last night, i thought the James shout was a penalty until the replay, he deserved his card. Hulk not so much.

I think Braga might do it this year, I really want Porto to win, but if Braga beat us I believe they will win the league. I'd be happy for them in a way, as long as it's not Benfica!

you missed a point(big one) there mate.
what if holly benifica loose some points on the way to the glory?
Referees.. the good and the really ugly
5 Sunday, 11 March 2012 01:20
I thought the referee was excellent and should be pointed out for a great display apart from a tackle from A Perreia about ten minutes before he got a yellow card. All in all it was one of the best refereeing displays of the season. Hulk is his own worst enemy. Although he was held and it could have been given as a penalty he threw out a leg to try trick the referee and deserved the yellow card in the end. Clear penalty for Porto. Porto could easily have won it in the end. The Braga match was a get out of jail card in which Leiria were very unlucky not to get a draw because of a bad refereeing decision and due to Braga's ineffectivness of finishing off teams.. cant remember the number of times I've suffered unitl the final whistle this year.. today it was really tough.. Carlos Xistra did his usual game.. handing out yellow cards and not blowing for free where they existed. Everybody will say Braga got out of jail here.. but the fact of the matter is that no foul existed before the actual free kick resulted in a goal. Leiria played basically the first half with two defensive lines of 5. Was horrbile to watch them The second half they came out of their shell a little and actually frightened Braga. Moving on..
return of benfica

Benfica may win the league this year as a result of Victor perreira's incompetent management over porto. How ever benficistas will have to live with the fact for the 3rd time in the last two seasons they have been out classed by porto on their own turf. In summary benfica have light years to wait before they can even compare to porto's achievements and dominance in europe and portugal over the last 20 years.
A tough blow to academica that penalty
3 Sunday, 11 March 2012 00:00
but in fairness, it was a handball.

How exciting it would have been to read the headlines on monday if porto had lost, and benfica turned out a win. It would have been a three-way tie on points at the top. This is still a likely scenario in the coming weeks.

What an exciting league it is this year. I believe this is the fourth time in the last ten years that braga are in the mix for the title in the home stretch. Given their form at the moment, I am inclined to think they may have what it takes to do it this year.
Return of Benfica

Benfica needs one more mistake of Porto; AND of Braga; with Braga-Porto to come, mwah must be possible, a draw; besides, the schedule for Benfica is easier.

Forca BENFICA !!!!
