Hulk fires Porto to crucial win

Braga 0-1 FC Porto

Hulk versus BragaA second-half goal by Hulk was enough to earn FC Porto three points at Braga tonight. After an exciting and high quality first half played at a frantic pace, the intensity of the game dropped significantly in the second forty-five minutes. But the Brazilian’s goal means anything other than three points for Benfica in Monday’s derby at Sporting and Porto would appear to have the title in the bag.

Braga lined up with exactly the same XI as at Benfica last Saturday, in front of a big crowd at their magnificent AXA Stadium. Porto boss Vitor Pereira pulled a surprise with his starting line-up, dropping Austrian striker Marc Janko in favour of Brazilian Kleber. Midfielder Fernando failed to shake off an injury and was replaced by Defour.

Porto were first to threaten, with the ever dangerous Hulk breaking fast and setting up a chance for Lucho, whose shot from the edge of the box was parried by Quim. A carbon copy move set up the Argentine for another effort in the 27th minute, and again Quim reacted well to beat away Lucho’s strike.

Braga hit back and after Lima had shown a clean pair of heels to Otamendi, the striker hit a firm cross-shot narrowly wide. The near miss triggered an intense spell of pressure from Braga. Defour nearly gave away a penalty, but his trip on the excellent Miguel Lopes was correctly ruled to have taken place just outside the box. From the resulting free kick Helton did well to push Viana’s fierce drive over the bar.

Quim brilliance

Although clear-cut chances were hard to come by, both sides were pushing forward at every opportunity in an open and highly entertaining game. Just before half time Hulk raced onto a pass on the left of the box and from a narrow angle hit a thunderous shot with his left foot. Braga’s veteran goalkeeper Quim responded with a breathtaking save, diving backwards and somehow clawing the ball away for a corner.

The second half started with a bang and what proved to be a key moment in the match. A neat exchange of quick passes between Helder Barbosa and Hugo Viana sent the latter clear on goal 15 yards out, but the classy midfielder leant back and rifled his shot over the bar. Just like with Mossoro last week against Benfica, a clamorous miss would come back to haunt Braga.

The unfortunate Viana was involved again, as a loose pass in his own half was picked up by James Rodriguez. The Columbian slipped the ball through to Hulk, who advanced into the box and beat Quim with a cross-shot that rolled into the net via the post.

The hosts initially reacted well to the setback, with Viana’s firmly struck free kick somewhat fortuitously deflected wide by Maicon. However, Porto did a good job at drawing the sting out of Braga’s forward momentum, and looked extremely dangerous on the counter-attack. From one such break Varela’s cross was poked inches wide of the post by James Rodriguez.

Otamendi to the rescue

In the 78th minute Lima headed a corner over when he perhaps should have done better and shortly afterwards only a well-timed sliding interception by Otamendi prevented Paulo Cesar’s cross reaching Lima for what would have been a certain equaliser. That proved to be the last chance for Braga, and it was Porto who could have scored again in the dying moments, as Alex Sandro’s shot deflected just wide of the post.

Victory enables Porto to consolidate their position at the top of the table, moving onto 63 points, four points ahead of Benfica, who have played a game less. Braga remain in third on 58 points and while top spot now looks unlikely for the Arsenalistas, they are still in the hunt for the all-important runners-up spot, which brings the reward of automatic qualification to the group stages of next season’s Champions League.

The game was fairly balanced and a draw would have been a just result. Only 2 points for discussion.......1st, I believe Defour should have been sent off kefir accumulation of yellows while still in the first half, but once again refs prove gutless. Secondly, Alvaro Pereira should also have seen a red early
In the 2nd half..........I won't say corrupt, but the clear favoritism in Portuguese officiating needs to stop. These little missed calls all end lead to points and eventually a tainted championship. Perhaps some influences involved? It's just real disappointing to see.
Gentlemens agreement ? rubbish

Mat are you sure you are a benfica fan. You obiviously don't know anything about the history bewteen benfica and braga. In the 80's benfica with the championship already stiched up allowed braga to win the last game of the season in order to save them from relegation ( they actually admitted to this). Ever since then braga has been like a sister club to benfica. Braga fans typically root for benfica as a consequence of their deed. So mate if anything braga would do anything possible to keep the title away from Porto.
Lying down....

If you think Braga was lying down against Porto, something is seriously wrong with you. That was a great 2-way game with plenty of offense. If Braga was laying down, I don't think they would have gone forward so much and threatened Helton as much as they did. Come on, let's at least be fair in our judgement.

I am a huge Braga fan, but in no way do I think they laid down for Porto, played bad, or got robbed.
Matt/slb/NJ are stupid??

We had the chances against Porto and we had bad luck on several calls. Claiming that Braga is corrupt without any legitimate proof is classless and ridiculous. I don't believe Porto deserved to win but to say Braga is corrupt when your own president (Luis Felipe Vieira) has been caught selecting refs illegally for games is stupid and may I add hypocritical. Let's not forget the tunneled championship. I'm still waiting for an explanation as to why Vandinho was suspended 3 months...
Where's Bryan?

O yea it was porto facing braga
sour grapes

I cant believe the non sense being posted on this message board. If you know anything about Portuguese football you would know that Braga would never roll over for northern rivals Porto, and to say that is utter nonsense. Braga haven't reached the status they have by lying down for anyone. Get over your sour grapes and deal with it
0_o Easy there Matt...

As much as I love Benfica and hate Porto, even I don't consider that a "corrupt" match. Porto won fair and square. I think you are just blinded by rage at the moment that Porto are one step closer to regaining the title. Easy up buddy, not every match Porto plays in is "corrupt".
Braga isnt good enough
12 Sunday, 08 April 2012 17:05
Braga is not good enough to win the title its like everyone is saying they give 200 percent against Benfica thenn they play Porto and let Porto win Hugo Vianna was horrible missing a huge chance and giving Porto the goal in which i believe Quim should save it but i bet Bryan still loves him LOFL no title for Braga if Benfica beats sporting we can still win it if not Porto are champions
LOL!

Waiting for a certain person that I won't name, because I don't want to embarass Bryan.. To say "Braga was robbed!!!" Or is it only Benfica that gets accused? LOL!
Typical Braga

They pull out all the stops vs Benfica and play with passion and purpose. Then they line up against their Northern neighbors, effectuate a gentleman's agreement with PDC, no doubt, and lay down like the dogs that they really are. It couldnt have been more obvious, just like it is every time these two, Porto and Braga, play each other. I know and recognize that Porto is the better team, and they deserve to be champions for capitalizing on Benfica's drop in form and points.
But cmon, Braga can at least try to make it look like a competitive game that is actually being contested. And people have the nerve to talk about tunnels. Pathetic. Shame on the FPF and the liga for letting these things happen. The title was not so much won by Porto as it was lost by Benfica this year. Bottom line: Nobody can tell me that was a legit game yesterday. Typical Liga BS... Congrats to Porto on the title, the shame is that you didnt even need Braga to lay down like that yesterday, you would have been champs anyway. How Sad and Corrupt!

I do not understand either of you. Benfica escaped with a win against Braga. That game was the definition of escaped. The missed penalty call for Braga seconds before Benfica got theirs would have turned Benfica on their heads.

Porto are in first because Benfica was distracted by the champions league? Let me bring you back a few years when Porto won the uefa cup and champions league and the treble. Benfica was no where near those competitions and Porto were competeing on all fronts without any trouble. You Benfica fans are endlessly calling Benfica the deepest team in Portugal this year and they have let just about every chance of salvaging a season slip from their greasy fingers. The denial must end and you must come to terms with the fact that Porto is and has been for many years now the strongest and most consistant team in Portugal regaurdless of how many socios Benfica has or how many goals eusebio has scored....WAKE UP PEOPLE!
Needed a draw

I was really hoping for a draw in this one.
I didn't see it, but if there's anything that Braga has shown this year is mental fortitude. I wouldn't count them out yet.
As for Pirto we'll see how they settle in right now. They've shown all season that they coud slip up.
Maritimo had a costly loss, maybe due to looking ahead.

As a Benfiquista we obviously need all three points at the Pia. We actually have to win them all and look for help.
Not over yet, Tripeiros.
Porto's title to lose now

They have found form at a pivotal time and have capitalised on Benfica's drop in form and distraction of the Champions League. However nothing is in the bag just yet, there's still tomorrow's derby and 4 more matches still to play. I disagree that if Benfica fails to win tomorrow that it's absolutley over. Of course a win in the derby is vital for us to have a good chance, but let's not forget that our last 4 fixtures are all matches I expect us to win. Porto still have to play Maritimo away and Sporting at home, both matches where points could be dropped. Still some twists to come yet, I feel, in this roller-coaster of a season...
Ouch

I feel bad for Viana. Things just didn't go his way at all. Porto escape with a win.

porto all the way for the title noe the momentum is with themm woop woop
All we need now
3 Sunday, 08 April 2012 00:18
All we need now is a sporting victory or draw Vs benfica, a porto win at maritimo and the title is in the bag. What is funny about all this is that Porto have been really below par this year mainly as a result of poor management yet benfica still failed to take advantage of all this. I just hope regardless if they win the title or not that they show victor the door and bring in either pedro manuel, domingos or villas boas!!!
great game

Both teams played quite well, but Hugo Viana's mistakes gave Porto the win. Apart from his poor shot and terrible pass to James Rodriguez, Hugo Viana was actually having a good game.

He played some fantastic long passes throughout the match, but in the end, his two mistakes may have costed him a spot in the Euro 2012. I read recently that Paulo Bento was going to be at the game to watch Miguel Lopes.

While Bento may have been unimpressed with Viana's costly mistakes, I'm sure that he was very impressed with Lopes. I thought that he had a fantastic game. Defensively, he was outstanding, and when he did go forward, he looked very dangerous. He was so solid defensively that I don't think that he was beaten even once during the game by any Porto player including Hulk, James, Pereira, and Varela.

I haven't seen much of him this season, but if he's this solid on a regular basis, he may be a better option than Joao Pereira.

Custodio, who has been excellent this season, wasn't at his best, but he also deserves a call up from Bento.

I was impressed with the entire Braga defense including Quim. On Porto, the standout performers for me were Otamendi and Moutinho.

As a Benfiquista, I am pretty upset about the result. Benfica will have to win on Monday or we'll have almost no chance of winning the liga.
