Ola John joins Benfica, Fabiano joins FC Porto, Polga & Pereira leave Sporting

Portuguese big three get down to transfer business

Ola JohnJoão PereiraWith the end of the 2011/12 season still in the rear-view mirror, Benfica, Sporting and FC Porto have not wasted any time initiating their summer transfer business.

After lengthy negotiations lasting several weeks, Benfica and Twente finally reached agreement for the transfer of young Dutch midfielder Ola John. He has signed a 5-year contract at the Estádio da Luz, with the rescission clause set at a staggering 45 million euros. The transfer fee is reported to be around €9 million.

“It was a difficult decision but it was me who wanted to make the move,” said John. “At Benfica a young player has the chance to grow and go further, and that’s important for me.”

John was in line to be called up for Holland’s Euro 2012 squad, but a late season injury put paid to those hopes. “I’m a player who doesn’t normally get injured. Two weeks before the squad was announced I hurt my ankle and didn’t manage to recover in time. In the future, as long as I play well at Benfica, I’ll be in the national team set-up for sure,” added John, who turned 20 last Saturday.

João Pereira and Anderson Polga say their goodbyes

Lisbon rivals Sporting also had a busy day, with two mainstays of their team in recent years leaving the club. It had been widely reported in recent days that Portugal right-back João Pereira was set for a move to Valencia, and the fiery defender’s switch to the Spanish club was made official today.

Sporting receive €3.7 million for Pereira, and could earn up to an extra half a million euros depending on the player’s and Valencia’s performances. “I’m happy to have reached such a big club as Valencia, and such a competitive and demanding league as La Liga,” said Pereira.

Anderson PolgaAlso saying goodbye to the Alvalade, after nine years, is veteran centre-back Anderson Polga. The World Cup winner has been released by Sporting, but at 33 years of age said he will continue his career, probably back in homeland Brazil.

“The memories I take with me are the day I arrived and each year that passed when I was happier and happier. Of course I went through joy and disappointment; we went through some tough moments, but that’s part of the deal. It was a pleasure and an honour to belong to this club, which has fans that are different to all the rest. I’m a Sportinguista in my heart,” said Polga.

Fabiano signs for FC Porto but stays at Olhanense

fabiano-freitas-20120524.jpgFC Porto have snapped up giant Brazilian goalkeeper Fabiano Freitas from Olhanense. Standing at an imposing 1.97 metres, Fabiano is the tallest player in the Portuguese league, and enjoyed an excellent season at the Algarve club where he was an ever-present.

Porto have paid 1.2 million euros for the 24 year old, but with Helton and Bracali at the Estádio do Dragão, and Beto possibly returning from his season-long loan at Cluj, Fabiano will remain at Olhanense on loan next season. “I’m satisfied with what’s been agreed. Everything has its moment. When the time comes I’ll be prepared,” said Fabiano.

by far the worse defender has gone, now we can build a more stable defense.
The good days are coming back!

I agree with the posters about the transfer fee of Joao Pereira being way too low. Sporting should've held on until someone else offered more. How can he be worth only 3.7 million? When I look at for e.g the Liverpool buys in the last year (surely the worst business a club has ever done in the history of football transfers!): 35 million on Carrol, 20 million on Henderson and 20 million on Downing...while Portugal's first choice right-back is only worth 3 million? That's just crazy!

Portuguese clubs have to make sure they don't lose their talent for less than what they're worth. At Benfica the same happened with Di Maria, who i still think we lost for less than his value (he was sold for less than what Liverpool paid for Downing.. huge lol!!). And they better make sure the same doesn't happen with Gaitan too. Portuguese clubs must play hard bargain if clubs come with cheap-skate offers...because there are some clubs out there (Man City, PSG, Chelsea etc) who will pay crazy money...Bargain harder!

At 3-4 million you might as well keep JP because you won't replace him for that much he's a key player. At worst they should have waited for the euro to be over because he may get the opportunity to shine and be worth at least double.
I don't disagree Mdot

The other concern with Sporting's transfers is that the club doesn't own the full contract on most of the acquisitions. Sporting only owns 50%, at most, of the players. Even if they are able to get great offers, the return on investment won't be that great. Yes Sporting didn't have to pay/ dole out as much for them, but they are the ones who will be spending to develop them.

I expect Porto to lose quite a bit this off season. Hulk is definately gone, the question is whether PdC holds onto his 40 mil asking price or accepts Chelsea's reported offer of 30 mil. You can forget the ridiculous 100 mil.
Pereira, Fucile, Rolando will most likely leave as well. Moutinho would jump at a chance to give it a go in another league and Iturbe wants out. Yes, some weren't in the plans but the squad all of a sudden doesn't have a veteran presence.

Benfica all of a sudden looks the most secure, but that perception can be fleeting. Nico should be gone but if teams come hard for Luisao, Garay, Javi, Axel, Nolito, Cardozo and Rodrigo, it could get ugly. Yes that's a lot to lose, so most would stay, but how happy would they be?

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but Braga has now moved up to CL Playoff instead of 3rd Qualifier. That means they'll have more time to get the team organized and rested. If they advance they would also move into Pod 3 in the group stage drawing.
I'm really curious to see what they can get done this transfer season. Stay put and doing nothing will be wrong thing to do.

I'm not a Joao P. fan for various reasons, but he should have gotten a higher transfer fee. I understand that he is nearing the end of his prime at 28, but they should have gotten at least 6 or 7 million for a solid defender who plays at the national level.

Classic SCP: Hard working players, passionate fans, incredible youth academy, horrible office management.

Bad transfers this year by Sporting

I’m sorry but the amount Sporting is getting for their players is a joke. From the last transfer window today, Sporting’s management has done a horrible disservice to their fans but dumping players for free or next to nothing transfers. I don’t care if people love or hate JP but he should be going for more then $3.6+some small perks. Hell rumors are that Roma were looking at buying Jardel from Benfica for 4 million, anything under 5million is for bench players or guys who haven’t proved themselves.

Sporting isn’t my club but I want to see Portuguese teams healthy and growing in terms of overall club standings in the world. Sporting spending record amounts last season to the point where they couldn’t afford to fix their grass/field worried me. It worried me that their spending in the summer was based on the hope of going to the CL group stage this upcoming season (not happening now). It worries me that they continue to average very small profit margins on their players. Given what’s happening in the European financial crises, it doesn’t take much for creditors to start knocking on peoples doors, the people most over leveraged will take the biggest it.

Sporting develops and has attracted amazing talent throughout the years but outside of a few cases they continue to miss the boat on working the transfer the market. I hope I’m over reacting as I would hate to see Sporting in serious financial problems. I hope in the case of Ricky and a few other key players that they sell for bigger amounts like Porto and Benfica keep doing for starting 11 players.

As for Ola John, great pick up. 9million is a good bit of money but considering that he on the Dutch national team at age 20 says a good bit about this player. From what I’ve seen he can be a big impact player. If we sell Nico for the 20-30million we’re looking at, that’s great business on our part. Ola John will have a 45million buyout. If he does well we can easily sell for over 20million. That’s good business and good margins. I expect the biggest financial winners this year will be Porto if they do sell a few of their key players which Hulk could be on that list. While it sucks to lose players, as long as our clubs double their returns it allows them to spend more on the transfer market to improve the overall quality of our clubs.

I also thought Perreira's transfer fee was low - but then I realized two things that put it in perspective. 1) he is 28 years old, and more improtantly, 2) he only had one year left on his contract with Sporting. Sporting should have extended his contract before shopping him - they would've gotten a lot more $$ if he had 3 or 4 years left on his current contract (this is, of course, assuming Joao would have agreed to an extension). All in all, 3.7m for a 28 year old Perreira with just one yerar left on contract sounds about right (maybe a little low but not much)...

I was hoping Sporting would have got a better transfer fee for Perreria, however good luck Joao!

Valencia has always been a top club. They've been in the champions league consistently for the past 10 years. Its a step up from a 4th place liga finish unfortunately. I wish him all the best.

Some Thoughts

Let me first say that I realize player values are very arbitrary. I don't take stock in the transfer fees that clubs put on players, since those are always inflated. But there are several sites/organizations that state player market values, who happen to be credible.
In saying that;

I'm troubled by the Pereira transfer. It's being reported Sporting will receive 3.7 mil euros with an additional 500 thousand should certain metrics be met. So if everything goes great, Sporting is to take in 4.2 mil.
The biggest problem I have with that figure is that based on several sites (non-Portuguese) has Pereira's market value at between 9 and 11 million euros. By all accounts Sporting has only gotten half of the players value.
Why? Pereira is an Int'l squad player in his prime, that is rated very well. This one is odd to me.

It's being reported that Sporting has also sold to junior players to Inter Milan for 800 thousand euros.

I know that here's a financial crunch, and Sporting doesn't own most of the playes they have, outright. But in getting what I perceive is a small amount for Pereira, who they did own, it's not a good sign.

Just so I don't show bias, the numbers being thrown around in regards to Ola John are a bit scary. Let me say that I'm happy Benfica has gotten a highly rated prospect which could develop into something special and profitable. In saying that, by all accounts the reported 9 mil that Benfica has paid is a bit high. Although Ola's market value has seen a big jump, he was still only in the 3 to 5 mil range.

I know this is off topic, and I hope it doesn't high jack the article. Benfica won another title this week, it just so happened to be in Basketball. The final was at the Dragao, and what happened afterwards was inexcusable.
Before I go any further, let me add that when Benfica turn the lights off and turned the sprinklers on, many Benfiquistas killed the club for it. It was bush league and it didn't matter that other big clubs had done it before. It made us look very small, and most Benfiquista criticized the club.
Now that I said that, apparently all sorts of objects were thrown at the Benfica players, after the match. People were in fear for their safety, and by all accounts it was a riot. Nevermind that once again, Benfica was attacked the evening before the match as well.
I realize that most Porto fans are passionate but also happen to be sensible adults. But the actions of the hoodlums needs to be addressed. Not a peep out of PdC or the Porto organization apologizing for the actions of the few. This sort of behavior needs to be stopped and not tolerated by the club whose fans are behaving out of control.
Let me add that Sporting was just as negligible in not reacting properly to the fire in the stands at the Luz.
I'm sure that Benfica has also not acted quickly enough if at all in admonishing its fans for improper behavior.
The fact is that we have wonderful fans that get to watch great futebol. But if this is to continue, players won't come and their will be even less people watching. Sponsors will diminish and the league will suffer badly.
Instead of bickering and accusing, these presidents along with he FPF need to come together and show unity verse hoodlums.
Pereira. Polga.

Valencia has traditionally been a grand Spanish club with a rich history and a long tradition of competing at the highest levels of European football. Look at the long list of pedigreed players that have passed through that club. They just dont have the scratch to compete with the likes of ultra-rich malaga, madrid, and barca...,
Top club?

OLA John

OLA John e bem-vindo a Benfica!!! From what I've heard and from what little I've seen, he's a pacy winger with trickery and skill...all traits that i felt we were missing in the team this past season (given that the one guy who could've provided it...Nolito...was benched most of the time!!!). 9 million euros? That's quite a lot for us, and certainly guarantees the departure of Gaitan, and possibly one or two more. I just hope it won't be any of Witsel, Nolito or Garay. All 3 of those would be very important to us for next season....Should be yet another interesting summer of activity!
Congrats To Joao Perreira!

He's a good right back and earned his move to one of the top clubs in the world! This is a good move for all parties involved, everyone will benefit. Joao Perreira deserved it and I'm sure he'll be great in Valencia as well!
