Academica down Sporting at Alvalade

Sporting 1-2 Academica

Sporting suffered their third consecutive defeat last night after Joao Ribeiro’s second-half strike gave Academica their first away league victory of the season.

Having lost 5-2 to Porto in midweek in the Portuguese Cup, Sporting were desperate to get back to winning ways in the capital. However, despite the presence of new signing Pedro Mendes in midfield, goals from Orlando (3’) and Ribeiro (59’) either side of a Joao Moutinho effort saw the Lions’ crisis worsen.

Sporting: Rui Patrício; João Pereira, Polga, Tonel e Grimi; Pedro Mendes (Hélder Postiga, 82); João Moutinho, Matías Fernandez e Vukcevic (Saleiro, 61); Liedson e Pongolle (Pereirinha, 72)
Yellow Cards: None

Académica: Ricardo; Pedro Costa, Berger, Orlando e Emídio Rafael; Nuno Coelho, Tiero, Cris (Amoreirinha, 82) e Diogo Gomes (Vouho, 46); Sougou e João Ribeiro (Lito, 70)
Yellow Cards: Sougou (87)

Goals:

[0-1] Orlando, 3'
[1-1] Moutinho, 24'
[1-2] Ribeiro, 59'

a bad cultural trait

I have noticed that when things get tough most portuguese teams, in any sport not just football, tend to throw up their hands, give up, argue amongst themselves, argue with the ref and generally not focus on trying to win the game as a team. I dont know whether this is a cultural thing but it is becoming a regular occurrence and the bad thing about it is that kids see this and copy it. Porto, Benfica and Sporting are really good teams. I would not say they were great teams as great teams tend to pick themselves up when the chips are down. Sporting has the opportunity to be a great team if they can turn things around and beat Benfica. They will have this one opportunity to show what a great portuguese team can do.
Season is over... team has quit.. need a new start next year to fix it.

Sporting are just playing UNDISCIPLINED and it doesn't matter who they play if they keep playing this way they will continue to lose games. Just when you think Rui Patriocio cant look any worse that goal inside 3 mins was laughable. Any reserve keeper could of made that stop. He along with the rest of the squad are playing with little confidence and thats on Carvalhal. His tactics in that 2nd half and subs he used were questionable. Guys complaining about a foul which leads to Academica taking advantage and scoring on counterattack. UNDISCIPLINED thats what this team is and with the derby this week it might get real ugly for Sporting.
Better do something quick

You cant' survive on history alone they better fix this very quick or they will end up being one of the smaller teams in the liga because the gap is closing very quickly just look at teams like Braga , Nacional etc. They have there eyes on these spots !!
