Free-scoring Porto cut gap on leaders

FC Porto 3-0 Naval

Porto celebrations in the rainFC Porto served further warning that they are not out of the championship race with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Naval at a rain-swept Estadio do Dragao tonight. Goals from Tomas Costa, Falcao and Varela pulled Porto to within 7 points of leaders Benfica with one game in hand.

An ultra-defensive Naval did a good job of frustrating Porto until the 37th minute when Tomas Costa’s free-kick found its way into the back of the net. The hosts dominated play but nearly suffered a shock equaliser on 75 minutes when substitute Simplicio burst through on goal but Helton pulled off sharp save to preserve his side’s lead.

Almost immediately Falcao continued his rich vein of scoring form to head in after being set up by Bruno Alves, and Varela put the icing on the cake with a powerful drive from outside the box shortly before the final whistle.

FC Porto:
Helton, Fucile (Miguel Lopes, 82), Rolando, Bruno Alves, Alvaro Pereira, Tomas Costa, Belluschi (Guarin, 64), Ruben Micael (Valeri, 82), Mariano, Falcao, Varela

Naval:
Peiser, Carlitos, Gomis, Diego Angelo, Daniel Cruz, Lazaroni, Godemeche, Alex Hauw; Davide (Fabio Junior, 46), Bolivia (Simplicio, 74), Camora

Goals:
[1-0] Tomas Costa, 37
[2-0] Falcao, 79
[3-0] Varela, 87

i'm assuming that bartender was well into his 60's to remember benfica being a dominant force in europe. anyone 40 and younger won't know anything about that unless they're into the history of the game. not only that but the game back then was nothing like it is today, and benfica's dominance was during an era where european titles weren't seen as being so important like they are today. outside of portugal, porto is the better known team.

and i agree sportings football academy has produced the best portuguese players, but that's not porto's business model. porto goes and finds players not only domestically but also around the world. they are very good at spotting diamonds in the rough, shining them up and selling for big bucks. sporting can't produce as many players as porto can find.
hate to point it out

I hate to burst the bubble of the Benfica fan but you are all being incredibly overzealous... like usual... you spent almost 50 million (just trying to figure in my head, might be quite a bit less, or more) over the past two transfer windows and you call a 4 point lead (assuming porto wins their game in hand) over the the 2nd n 3rd place teams a lock.. not only are you guys not a lock to win the league but you are already out of the cup.. you guys always seem to forget what is inconvenient to know.. not to mention you ply your trade in a second tier European competition... im not saying you wont win the league... but im not saying you will win the league.. 4 points with 11 rounds is not very much.. espeically when you have to play the 2nd, 3rd, n 4th placed team still...

Listen anyone who doubts anyone of the big 3's quality is a fool. Lex makes a good point with regard to the poor management of the GLORIOSO!!!!!!!! Yes, there were those who were more interested in the finances rather then the product on the field. That's all been erased now with the "Maestro" and Jorge Jesus at the bridge. I understand Porto fans are nervous and are taking every opportunity to brag about their team. It's clear their reign is coming to a end. Anyone who doesn't understand what Dan (fellow Massachusettsian) said about SLB having the complete respect of the futbol world doesn't know the game. I don't care about what Pinto did or didn't do. I don't care about who use to run the GLORIOSO!!!!!!!!! The fact is this Benfica is a better team then Porto right now. As Fresh likes to say the past is the important thing right now. In closing as I said earlier Lex "Envy" is a sin and it's time you repent. Oh one last thing Lex if you truly believe what you said about Pinto and it being a good thing that he cheated because it was good business. Then you are an Idiot with little respect for the game and how that represents your club. Way to be a stand up guy. Typical Porto fan no class.
um no europe goes to sportings youth academy to find good players

i think sporting has been portugals main export in actual portuguese players for the past ten years, and also i have much respect for benfica even though im a sporting fan, i recently went to my 2nd cousins weding in connecticut were i was talking to the italian bartender who instantly remembered how every team in europe feared benfica and eusebio in the 60s and 70s, im just stating benfica is the "iconic" portugal team
manny is right

it was 2 games... and there was little legitimate proof anyways. Regardless Porto have a better management than Benfica. Do i need to remind Benfica fans on a former president that stole money from the club. Hes in jail now!
If he were as smart as Pinto then nothing would happen. Benfica fans just prove their stupidity when they argue that ohhh porto win everything because they cheat. Its business and business done well if we do cheat. If pinto was an idiot like the benfica president he would be in jail and porto would not have gone to the champs league. The fact is no one can take pinto down because A) no legitimate proof.. B) because he covers up well C) This helps win games and Pinto is still free. How clever is Pinto!! Fact is football is a business and Pinto is a great businessman.
just mad that no one outside of portugal knows who benfica is anymore

i believe pinto da costa was found to do no wrong. also the porto were ACCUSED of bribing refs before TWO matches. So what happened to the hundreds of other matches that porto won? They're just better on the field and off, they recruit better players and they make smarter business moves. every year they sell off the best players on the team, and every year they win the league.

Porto is where the monster teams of europe come buy their future stars

again we didnt buy refs for 15 years but you can think that if it makes you feel better at night. The bottomline is we have 12 titles in 15 years and you have 1. Did we buy refs for uefa games as well ? Probably not. But yet we won the champions league and uefa cup back to back.

When i see benfica doing what porto has for these 15 years i will appaul them with dignity! till then though... benfica have been embarrassing!
How does this work?

A club that was recently exposed for fixing matches in the past 10-15 years talks smack about other clubs? Especailly Benfica?

This isn't arrogance?

this is the beginning of porto's run for the title. benfica still play braga who have only given up 6 goals all year. a tie there would put us in great position.

still talking about bribing refs? porto is the only team in europe keeping portugal from becoming a complete embarrassment for as long as i can remember. but i guess those refs are bribed too right?

And yet there are still more Benfica fans in Porto then there are Porto fans. I can't wait for Benfica to mop the floor with Porto, this time we'll try to bring our main team and save you the embarrassment of getting beat by our B team. Now run along and continue to talk about Benfica, because we love it.
*sigh*

lex/canada you always have something bad to say about Benfica. I will admit I watched the game and Porto deserved the win but your already saying Porto will be champions by the end of the season. My team is Benfica and we have the most titles but I don't bring up the past to win my argument so you bringing up the past is kind of pathetic, but as of right now Benfica is ahead of Porto and Porto has to do better especially when they meet Benfica again.

That's true Lex, but one thing that I love on most part of Porto fans is the fact of being modest with a lot of ambition, not the arrogance.

With hard hard working we will prove that are still alive and the Liga are not over for us! We are playing all the competitions, we are showing a better and attacking fluid football.

Mariano are being amazing this year, incredible! I recognize that I was one of the supporters that criticized Mariano and Jesualdo prove that wasn't wrong. Like to watch Micael once again. Good play by Tomás Costa. I think now Jesualdo could have "problems" on midfielder with Ruben Micael and Belluschi playing so well together, and Tomás Costa looking for Fernando's place, where can enter Meireles on this? A very good problem.

By the way, I'm full of ref's robbed, and Porto makes robberies all the time etc. This is sick, a big frustration and bad losing by some supporters. This year have some weird things outside the pitch (and inside of it of course) that the word robbery isn't enough to me, and it wasn't Pinto da Costa. Of course that Porto also have the capacity to put on the top unknown players and managers like Carvalho, Mourinho, Deco, Maniche, Pepe, Bosingwa etc. just robbing.
And about envy of "Portugal's club" or the "Old regimen club", I am no envy 'cause my club have won more trophies in Portugal than anyone else since 25 years and my club have the best international curriculum (better than Sporting or Benfica together) and I've seen them winning on color television.

So let's enjoy this championship plz..

Lex it's nice to see you have so much envy of the Glorioso. I suppose that's the part of being a fan of Porto envy of the Country's team. You see your 12 in 15 is a very impressive feat regardless of how much Pinto had to pay for them....(I love watching that video) Unfortunately for you though Benfica will win the Liga in 2010 I have little doubt of that. You see your memory is terribly flawed. First lets remember the Glorioso has 31 Liga titles to Porto's 23 despite the last 15 years. 21 Taca's de Portugal to Porto's 16. You see these are the facts in spite of the last 15 years. Second I appologize if I'm mistaken, but you must not have watched the game between Benfica and Porto. If you did then you would have seen Benfica easily handle Porto with our "B" sqaud. Second and this is important that you remember this so pay close attention okay. People from Porto are Porto fans people from across the world are Benfica fans. Now say 5 Hail Mary's and 5 Our Fathers for your sins. Go in peace my child.
I second the GLORIOSO

Funny how all Porto fans can do is talk about trying to catch up to Benfica's 31 titles. Now lex we all know those 12 titles have been proven to be won by paying off refs.

HA!!!! how embarrassing!
this is a warning to benfica

the comeback is on! i smell a fifth title ! WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pinto da costa needs a new trophy case 12 titles in 15 years is too much glory... I think porto should be the GLORIOSO not Benfica(1 title in 15 years is embarrassing...).
HA!!!!!!!!
