Liedson hits four for Sporting; Benfica go three points clear at table top

Lisbon duo warm up for Europe with convincing wins

LiedsonIt was a memorable day for Portugal and Sporting striker Liedson, who hit all four goals as Sporting continued their resurgence with a 4-0 thumping of rock-bottom Belenenses at the Restelo.

Shortly afterwards Benfica put in another performance full of attacking verve at the Estadio da Luz. Ruben Amorim and Javier Saviola gave the Eagles an early two-goal lead, a spirited Pacos de Ferreira pulled a goal back through William, but Oscar Cardozo’s deflected shot ensured a home win.

Sporting 4-0 Belenenses

After a lukewarm first-half with few chances created by either side, Sporting produced an outstanding 45 minutes of attacking football to completely blitz a brittle Belenenses side surely destined for the drop.

The catalyst was substitute striker Saleiro, who came on for Yannick Djalo at the break. The young forward was on fire. He was directly involved in three of Liedson’s goals, hit the post and was also at the heart of a quite breathtaking move that ended with Moutinho scoring with a wonderful back-heel. Unfortunately the linesman, erroneously as it turned out, ruled out what would have been one of the goals of the season for an incorrect offside call.

It needed something special to rob Saleiro of the man-of-the-match award, and Liedson certainly produced that, proving that he is back to his best by hitting four goals in a match for the first time. Despite Sporting’s poor season and an injury stoppage mid-season, Liedson has now scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Lions in 2009/10, and another three for the Seleccao.

His best goal this afternoon involved a neat turn and powerful finish that flew inside Bruno Vale’s left hand post. Watch the goal by clicking on the screen below:

Sporting travel to Atletico Madrid on Thursday in good heart having won their last three matches in comprehensive fashion, scoring 10 goals and conceding none.

Goals:
[1-0] Liedson, 50
[2-0] Liedson, 60
[3-0] Liedson, 80
[4-0] Liedson, 88

Benfica 3-1 Pacos de Ferreira

Benfica took full advantage of Braga’s draw in Setubal yesterday to build a three-point cushion at the top of the table.

In front of another huge crowd at the Estadio da Luz Benfica seemed determined to close out the match as soon as possible. On 14 minutes Di Maria crossed for Cardozo to cushion the ball perfectly for Ruben Amorim to head into the net.

Just four minutes later Saviola scored a stunning second, latching onto a Di Maria throughball, dropping his shoulder to beat his marker brilliantly before unleashing an unstoppable shot inside the near post. Watch Saviola’s masterful strike:

Benfica continued to encircle Coelho’s goal with intent, but the young Pacos goalkeeper showed he is a player to look out for with a series of eye-catching saves. To their credit the visitors never ‘parked the bus’ and looked to break in numbers whenever possible. Just before the break they were rewarded as Maykon produced a peach of a cross that William headed into the net to halve the deficit.

But Benfica were soon on the charge again. Di Maria smashed a shot against the bar and it was no surprise when Oscar Cardozo scored a third goal to make the game safe. The Paraguayan striker’s shot took a huge deflection to leave Coelho stranded and push Cardozo back to the top of the Liga Sagres goal-scoring chart.

Jorge Jesus and his exciting team now turn their attentions to the Europa League as they prepare to welcome Marseille to Lisbon for a mouth-watering clash on Thursday.

Goals:
[1-0] Ruben Amorim, 12
[2-0] Saviola, 16
[2-1] William, 42
[3-1] Cardozo, 57

I'm loving the way all the Benfica fans are worried about the players on 4 yellows especially as this weekends game is against Nacional. The newspapers continually write off Braga's chances yet Benfica fans are still worried. They talk about revenge when Braga actually beat them fair and square and lost Vandinho for 3 months for ATTEMPTED aggression so both teams will go wanting to win. Let's see if the 50 million was well spent or if JJ's talking was all hot air.

im not suggesting that i am saying it is weird how just those three got yellows what for di maria talkin every player does that for saviola falling not diving falling because he is small he couldnt hold his balance it is dafniatley not a penalty the only one that i could agree with was luisaos but there were tackles that deserved yellos yet di maria said something and boom got a yellow sam vs leixoes when he scored the first which was counted offside either the ref was blind or he is stupid as hell he was a mile onside he said something and boom a yellow now i agree with the yellow vs leixoes but the refs in portugal are horrible theres only a few that im content with when i see them like vs leixoes the main ref was great and whoever said benfica only wins with the help of the refs look at the pacos and leixoes game
Thank you

Good for Liedson. We need to make sure that he can do this against teams that can actually defend...of which I am sceptical. For one, he's too small. Makukula would be great if he is able to continue his form in Turkey...he is blowing away the competition right now. I think the next highest goal scorer in the Turkish Super Lig has about 10 goals or so. The big question of course is whether he can maintain this form against higher calibre teams...judging from his past with Benfica, that is a VERY big question indeed. I think it would definitely be worth the risk of including him in the WC squad however. Almeida is an underwhelming forward at best. Makukula, on a good day, would be the perfect counterpart to the nimble dribbling skills and speed that Liedson has to offer. A big burley striker that can shrug off most defenders with ease when he's on his game. Bring him to South Africa!

The referee's job is not to know who is on 3 yellow cards. His job is to discipline the players when needed. If the ref gives a yellow card and the player is now on 4, and in danger of missing a big match (braga) because he picks up an additional card in the next game, then that is the players fault.

You, and Jorge Jesus seem to suggest that the ref shouldn't have given the card out because now he could miss a match. Its almost as if they met before the match and agreed not to give, x,y, and z players a card. Jesus then gets upset because he gave it out.
Glorious outcome

I'm confident that I could have scored 2 of those goals had I been on the field. And I know I would have scored on the one he got against China. Even he looked embarrassed about that one
Big Deal

....
Liedson gets four goals against the worst team in the league and this makes top billing while Benfica taking sole possession of first place takes a back seat to this?

Let's see if he can do the same against Atletico. Good luck!
benfica will win league title

but its a joy seeing liedson like this. In my opinion the strikers for portugal must be liedson and makukula.

watch this goal

thats why makukula needs to be in the seleccao. Hes big, aggressive, and he imposes his beastily force on any defender. Liedson is too SMALL to do this.
well done

Good job to liedson but its to late for sporting. Is it me? or does DiMaria strike the frame of the goal more often than he scores?
That's better finishing.....

Much better from Liedson....that's how we need him (and others) to finish for Portugal at the world cup.
You know what's crazy though? If he had finished even better (and he really should've on at least one occasion) he could've had 5 or 6 goals today. No joke, watch the highlights on footytube.com
portugal have 3 top forwards

Really good performance from Levezinho, he and Saleiro are starting to develop a nice 2 man partnership up front, when Yannick isnt up to par. As Saleiro is developing into a reliable option for Sporting.

Forca Sporting e Forca Levezinho.
Good way to head into vincente calderon.
No way

I couldn't believe I saw Liedson score 4 goals today and it doesn't matter if its last place Belenenses it's not easy scoring 4 goals in a game its very rare.

Well I'm glad that Benfica got the win as well now I'm excited for the Marseille matchup this midweek.
