Duda, Cadu among the goals in Spain, Romania

Portuguese abroad

Portugal left-back Duda scored for Malaga against former club Sevilla on Saturday, but was left disappointed as his side threw away a 2-0 lead to end up with just a point. Meanwhile, CFR Cluj are top of the Romanian league after Ricardo Cadu’s goal helped them to victory over U.Craiova.

Duda returned to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, where he spent two seasons, with bottom-placed Malaga, and many expected a comfortable home win for the hosts. However, despite the early sending off of forward Albert Luque, Malaga stunned the title-chasers by taking the lead midway through the first half through Fernando.

Winger Duda added the second just before half time, latching onto a miss hit shot to control the ball on the left of the penalty area and beat Varas with a clinical left-footed finish, sending the visiting Malaga fans into dreamland heading into half time.

A second-half brace from Luis Fabiano saw Sevilla rescue a point against their Andalucian rivals, but Malaga, who introduced Edinho in the final minute, will be happy to have earned a surprise draw at one of La Liga’s most difficult venues. The draw lifts Malaga out of the relegation zone, albeit possibly only for 24 hours.

Elsewhere, CFR Cluj, who recently dispensed with the services of Portuguese manager Antonio Conceicao, moved to the top of the Romanian league with a 2-0 victory over Universitatea Craiova. Club captain Ricardo Cadu, who was joined in the Cluj side by Dani, broke the deadlock on the hour mark, before Yssouf Kone sealed the three points ten minutes later.
