Ronaldo: “This win will restore confidence”

Portuguese pleased with winning goal

ronnieCristiano Ronaldo says the confidence gained from his side’s victory over Porto tonight will spur them on to improve during the end of season run-in.

The Portuguese scored the winning goal with a sensational strike after just 6 minutes at the Dragao, with Ronaldo firing past Porto goalkeeper Helton from some 35 meters.

“Was that my best ever strike? Maybe, I haven’t had the opportunity to see the goal, my team-mates say it was a fantastic goal - I’ll have to see the replay,” Ronaldo told Sky Sports after the match. “When Anderson gave me the ball, I decided to turn and thought straight away to shoot.

“My celebration? Inside I’m happy, maybe I didn’t show it but I am very happy. Sometimes I smile, sometimes I don’t’ - it depends on the moment - but inside I’m happy.

“The Priority was to win here in Porto. We know Porto is a fantastic team with great players, but we played our game. We played well, we tried to score goals and I scored so I am very happy and we go through to the next round.

“Of course this win gives us confidence because the last five or six games we haven’t played great. I hope this (result) changes that because we started the season fantastic but recently we dropped a little bit. But we’re confident and we look forward to returning to our best, both myself and my team-mates.”

The semi-final draw sees United meet Arsenal in an all-English clash, after the Gunners eased past Villarreal 3-0 at the Emirates, securing a 4-1 aggregate victory. “They are a fantastic team, they play good football,” Ronaldo said. “It’ll be a tight game, we know each other and I hope to win again to go to the final.”
