Man United’s Nani: “I’m not obsessed with being the best”

Winger focused on collective glory

Manchester United’s Portuguese international Nani says losing out on the Premier League title to Chelsea last year motivates him to achieve success with his club this season.

The former Sporting man has been a key figure for United this campaign, contributing nine goals and leading the assists charts with 16 as the Red Devils lead top the table with a five-point advantage over Arsenal. Looking ahead to the run-in, Nani is determined that United end the season in triumph after ending the term empty-handed last year.

“There is a lot of work ahead, but that is nothing new for us,” he told Don Balon. “We know nothing is won and the path will be difficult. But we’re on track, with a good chance of winning trophies. We want to maintain the same consistency, application and concentration. I want to win everything. We are well placed in the Premier League and the most important thing is for me to continue to help the team with goals and assists.

“For me, the most important thing is to keep helping the team, with goals and assists. Last summer, during the first week of my holidays, I could not stop thinking about how we lost the championship to Chelsea. Thankfully, I had the distraction of the World Cup preparations. This year that is not there - the summer is long - and I want to leave with a smile on my face having won at least one trophy.

“We’ll give our all in the Champions League and the English league. I feel good and so far, I have been able to help the team. It has been said that I am one of the most important players, but I still think I can improve in some aspects.

“What changed for me? Basically, I have had more opportunities. By having more playing time and starting more matches, my chances of having an influence increased. My confidence grew and I have managed to hold down my place in the team.”

Already seen as a possible contender for the end of season awards in England, Nani was asked by the Spanish newspaper about his personal ambitions, and specifically his hopes about being named on the next shortlist for the Ballon d’Or crown.

“I don’t know about that. I recognise that things have gone well but that’s for other people to decide. If my name ends up on the list, I will be happy. I want to be the best player in the world, but I am not living obsessed by it. My only real concern is to help my club and my national team and keep playing well.”

I've watched every game Ronaldo has played this year and he has been hacked left and right and has remained upright when it's humanly possible. There was one incident against Lyon in which you might say he dove but that's debatable.

Perhaps Ronaldo should ask Messi to give him some lessons in the fine art of gamesmanship. Messi is such a nice guy that I'm sure he'll teach Ronaldo how to score a goal with his hand and receive praise around the world. Or, he can teach Ronaldo how to roll on the pitch like a barrel going down a flight of stairs after being tripped and afterwards act like your dead only peaking to see if the referee gave a yellow or a red, like Messi did a few years ago at Stamford bridge. Now to teach a near 6' 2" player how to dive without getting noticed is much harder than to do teach a player who is barely 5' 6." Those are some of the advantages of being small and Messi knows them well. By the way Messi only needs one more yellow in La Liga to be banned for a game, but very few people know this because that's how good he is.
Nani the best

It is grossly unfair to compare Nani to Ronaldo. Ferguson instructed the whole Man Utd team to FEED Ronaldo and play everything thru him. Ronaldo was fortunate that he had all Man Utd players focusing and giving him every opportunity to score. Nani on the otherhand is instructed to be more disciplined and isn't given the free roll that CR7 had. Yet when Nani does forget and breaks lose from the chains imposed on him by the coaching staff at MU, he has unbelieveable flair and giftedness. Nani is the best crosser into the box at United and that includes better than Valencia who finds it difficult to beat the top defenders in the PL, whereas Nani SKINS them regularly. I can't understand some Portugal supporters, because Nani has actually done more for your national team than CR7 has. Nani did so much than anyone else to get Portugal to the last world cup, I watched him play for you and he was magnificent. As for cry baby - well lets face it he is mercilessly butchered regularly by the PL bruisers. I would be screetching too if I were him with some of the murderous bone crunching tackles he endures every game! All that Nani lacks in my opinion is A LEVEL OF CONSISTENT PERFORMANCES, then he would be flying!

Actually Ramsey in the 2006/2007 season, Ronaldo in all competitions with Manchester United had 23 goals and 20 assists, in the EPL he had 17 goals and 14 assists. The assists statistic doesn't tell the whole picture, often a player creates the play that leads to a goal but is not credited with an assist because he doesn't make the last pass.

I'm not sure if Nani will ever win the Balon d'Or but I do believe he will be among the top ten players in the world.

Don't get me wrong...Nani is good value and has contributed well to Man utd's success this season but Cristiano Ronaldo single handedly made helped Man Utd win the premier league and champions league in 2008. I have never seen a player like Crisitano that stirkes so munch fear to his opnents in EPL with the exception of Thierry Henry at his peak. Ronaldo is the complete package, great right and left foot, exellent crosser, taking free kicks, score in and ouside the box, dribling past oppenents, physical stenghth and heading ability...do I need to go on anymore??? I am affraid Nani doesn't possess all these attributies but Nani is qauility none the less.

I'm a big fan of Nani and I think he is one of the best wingers in the game. That being said, I don"t think he'll ever be able to replicate the results Ronaldo has achieved over the years. I look foward to watching him in action in the upcoming friendlies. Hopefully Quaresma and Nani can find their scoring touch this weekend

Yeah orlando, but nani has something that ronaldo hasn't..do you get my point??if you think that i refer 'something' to Assist..yeah you're absolutely right...he's been the best assister so far in EPL,something that ronaldo never did when he's still wear Man Utd jersey..i'm still believe that he can be as good as cristiano even surpass him
he won't be as good as Cristiano Ronaldo

Its great for Portugal to have so many qauility attacking players and I think Nani has done really well and he's improving but I don't he'll reach Cristiano's level. As an attcking player Portuguese player Crisitano Ronaldo is the best thing since Luis Figo. This also pains me to say as a Benfica fan that Sporting really do produce the best Portuguese players

What a talent he has become! I have to admit I was skeptical for a while about him. Still, his quest to be named on the Ballon d'Or shortlist, while an appreciable goal, is beyond him at this point. When I watch Nani, I see tremendous skill on the ball, and great crossing ability, but his goal scoring prowess is still lacking. He has improved greatly in this area but has a long way to go before he reaches the level of Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Make no mistake, he made a huge step towards achieving his goal this year, and I hope for his sake and Portugals that he can continue playing better next season. I am really hoping to see some great things from Nani during the upcoming friendlies since Ronaldo won't be playing. There is nothing quite like watching all of our players come in from all over the world to do battle on the pitch against another national team. I can't wait for Saturday (and Tuesday).
