Mitchell van der Gaag to stay on as Maritimo coach

Club reward Dutchman for European qualification

Mitchell van der GaagMitchell van der Gaag has earned an immediate reward for guiding Maritimo to Europa League qualification. The Dutch coach, who was expected to be shown the door at the end of the season, will now stay at the Madeira club for at least one more year.

“Several meetings were held over the course of our final matches of the season, the last of which was this morning, where everything was confirmed. Mitchell van der Gaag will be our coach next season,” said club president Carlos Pereira yesterday.

Pereira insisted that no other coach had been sounded out during the period of uncertainty regarding the future manager of the club.

Wanted: Stadium

The president is now facing a thorny negotiation process to define in which stadium Maritimo will play their home Europa League matches next season. The club’s Barreiros stadium is undergoing building work and does not meet UEFA’s stringent safety standards.

As such, Pereira is hoping to convince fierce local rivals, Nacional, to allow use of their ground. “When we’re dealing with situations that are for the good of the region, rivalry should be put to one side. I think common sense will prevail.”
