Kleber saga comes to an end
Porto lose out as Brazilian striker remains at Maritimo
Maritimo received a boost yesterday as Brazilian striker Kleber confirmed he will be remaining at the Madeira club. The talented marksman had been heavily linked to a move to FC Porto in the close season.
The 20-year-old was a big hit last season, making such an impression that Porto tired to bring him into their squad to boost their attacking options.
There was confusion about whether or not Kleber was fully contracted to Maritimo, and the Dragons decided to deal directly with Atletico Mineiro, from whom the islanders had contracted the forward on loan.
The ensuing battle got ugly, with mutual threats exchanged between Maritimo and FC Porto, and the player himself refusing to return to Maritimo who he saw as preventing him from making an important step up in his career.
With no end to the impasse in sight, Maritimo threatened to take the matter to the Portuguese football authorities, claiming that a 3-point penalty should be imposed on the Liga leaders as stipulated in the regulations for “illegal enticement of a contracted player”.
It was Kleber himself who yesterday revealed that the matter is now closed and he is to return to Maritimo. “It’s all sorted out and I’m going to play for Maritimo. We held an excellent meeting. At four o’clock I’ll begin training with my team-mates.”
