Van der Gaag dropped by MaritimoPedro Martins takes over as interim coach Due to a poor string of results in the Liga ZON Sagres, the Maritimo hierarchy felt they had no recourse but to release coach Mitchell Van der Gaag from his position as coach with immediate effect.
Maritimo are having an abysmal start to their domestic campaign having just grabbed their first point this past weekend against 10-man Pacos de Ferreira. The inabilty to get the victory against the handicapped Pacos was the final straw for the Maritimo brass as they decided to drop the former player from his duties as the team's head coach. Despite looking very promising during the early rounds of Europa League qualifying, the team never managed to pick themelves up after a 3-0 defeat to BATE Borisov in the same competition. In all fariness to Van der Gaag, the verde-rubros did face Sporting and Braga away in two of their first four contests this season, but it still was not enough for the club to retain the Dutchman's services. Taking over the squad in the interim will be "B" team coach Pedro Martins. It is not known if Martins will be named as Maritimo's head coach permanently, but rumours are abound that the club would like to appoint Lito Vidigal as the team's new bench boss. by Marco Pereira |
