Portugal striker Edinho signs for Maritimo
Islanders land Malaga misfit
Malaga striker Edinho has signed on loan for Maritimo until the end of the season. Edinho has seen little action at the La Liga club, and has made the move to maximise his chances of getting on the plane as part of Portugal’s World Cup squad.
The forward has been regularly called into the Portugal squad by Carlos Queiroz over the last year, scoring against Malta in the final group match of the Seleccao’s qualifying campaign.
Edinho returns to Portugal after a two-year absence. He was part of Vitoria de Setubal’s memorable 2007/08 season, when the club won the Carlsberg Cup and finished sixth in the standings.
His performances for the Sadinos earned him a move to AEK Athens, where he again enjoyed a degree of success, leading to a move to Malaga last summer. But Edinho has had little playing time in Spain, and is keen to find his best form and fitness in order not to fall out of Carlos Queiroz’s plans in World Cup year.
He will team up again with two former Setubal team-mates, Claudio Pitbull and Robson, who now play for Maritimo.
