Maritimo snap up Brazilian midfielder

Edinho transfer falls through

rafael-miranda-20100108.jpgDefensive midfielder Rafael Miranda, has signed for Maritimo from Atletico Mineiro until the end of the season. Meanwhile, the islanders appear to have failed in their attempt to lure Portugal striker Edinho to Madeira.

“The project Maritimo have in place today and the quality of life this island provides were fundamental factors in my decision to come here,” said Miranda. “I spoke to players who know Madeira and Maritimo and I was given good indications.”

The 25-year-old Brazilian was signed until the end of the season and believes he can make a positive contribution. “Maritimo is a team that always fights to get into the European competitions. I hope to help them achieve this goal.”

Edinho to stay in Malaga

It was not all good news for Maritimo, however, as the club have been frustrated in their audacious bid to sign Portugal striker Edinho. The forward was expected to agree a loan deal until the end of the season, but negotiations between Maritimo, Malaga and the player hit a snag and the move was aborted.

Edinho played for Malaga yesterday in Spain’s Copa del Rey, scoring a goal in a 2-1 win over Getafe.
