Nacional coach Manuel Machado in intensive care

Doctors take “induced coma” measure

Manuel MachadoManuel Machado remains gravely ill in the intensive care ward of Funchal Hospital, in Madeira. The latest bulletin from the authorities of the Hospital Dr. Nelio Mendonca say the Nacional coach has a “reserved but stable prognosis”.

The 53-year-old was hospitalised on Friday after undergoing a liposuction of the abdomen operation. What was supposed to be a routine procedure caused severe side-effects for Machado.

The coach was in a life-threatening situation over the weekend, but the indications are that Machado has now stabilised, although he is in a state of induced coma. A full recovery is expected to take many weeks or even months.

Assistant coach Jose Augusto is to take over first-team coaching duties until the end of the year.
